I don't know how the image system works, or if this is even possible. I think it would be a neat idea to allow animated gifs in posts that do not require to be clicked. It could animate as long as it fell under a reduced file size?
( I found this thread that talked about gifs, but its different from what I'm suggesting )
I just think it would be a nice addition.

This is actually a good idea

I recommend against this highly, due to it putting uneccesary strain on the site, users, and people with less than capable computers/mobile devices

Yea that makes sense, although the limit could be reduced to compensate. I just thought it would be a cool addition.

The only limits that would actually work would be size reduction, limiting Gifs to work on the first, main post of a topic only, and having it where they don't work until after you go into the topic itself.

Having the gifs only work after you have entered the thread is a good idea.

Or maybe you could have a setting were you could turn off animated gifs?

That just seems like too much trouble. It'd be much easier to have it where it doesn't work until you click into the actual thread.

You could also make it so that a mouse-over makes it load, but that might be difficult.

You could also pop-out the GIF on the same page when you click on it, to make it simpler. I think the problem this is trying to solve is the inconvenience of viewing an entire thread of GIFs and having to open a new tab for each one over and over again (correct me if I'm wrong).

You could also load all the text first and stop loading the page if it is taking too long, but I don't know if you can just customize things like that.

It wouldn't be so bad if we couldn't do anything like that, but it really would be useful.

The whole point is to have it play without clicking. If it's a pop out window, it might as well be left the same way as it is now.

I like the idea of a mouse over option though.

>>10 I think the real problem would be the inconvenience of having to open every .gif in a new page. Having it as a pop-out window would be better than what it is now, because it's easier and more convenient.

A pop out window shouldn't be too hard to do. It'd have to be set so, upon rolling over an image (I think a class would have to be applied specifically for images in replies for the future to do this), a full sized version pops up above everything. To avoid affecting the text, the positions of all the divs it might go over would have to be set to relative, and the image would have to be set to absolute position.

I think that would work without breaking anything, but I'm not positive.

Personally though, I'd rather we not do that. I don't want every image to pop out to full size upon rolling over it. I also don't want .gifs to be playing every time I load a page because I don't have a strong enough connection; it'd take forever.

A button to turn it on and off, as mentioned, would be the best bet. Say it saves it based on cache, and then if you click to turn gifs on and the pop up on, it'll then allow all images to pop up, and all gifs to activate. But it'd still need the gifs to only work via going into the actual topic.
