The Implementation of a Search Bar (19)

1 Name: Thiamor !ZPE1Q6VxaY : 2013-10-30 19:27 ID:OesPQb7O [Del]

Now while we've discussed that this has been mentioned time and time again on many topics, locked and/or otherwise, I feel it is now time to address the situation properly at full length.

Normally we only make topics about site suggestions when and if the demand for such systems or implements are higher, and now I feel this has reached at least the minimum requirement demand-wise. With that said we have this same type of topic posted as it's own post and on other posts on a rather large scale.

We might as well discuss it. It might just be time now to actually think about implementing a search bar that then searches all topics on every board with the keywords or names that you use.

It might even work the same way by searching user names and thus easier to keep up on post searches. But it might have to be implemented via a board by board process as I don't quite know if it's possible for one search bar to search all of the boards at once since each board is it's own entity. As such that is why it's not yet possible to move topics into it's correct board.

So the same could be said about an all board search bar, which even if not possible, a regular search bar added somewhere on each board could work.

I feel this already has been addressed properly at full length, on post 17 on this thread.

http://dollars-bbs.org/suggestions/res/1328212001.html

To sum it up, posts are not distinguishable from threads, and neither are names, since there are no user accounts. The processing power required to search even one board would be immense, either for client side or server side. Not impossible but unrealistic.

Please read at least that post, it clears some things up.

In terms of boards, it's only when there's demand is when it's considered.

For other site related things, functionality is a huge part, like 3/5 huge, for consideration of adding anything.

Is it possible in a realistic sense to make a search bar?

Is it even necessary if we have other ways of going about to searching?

Would the time to implement it on this site be worth it if it is possible?

And many more questions to be asked, probably.

Well it is possible, but the way I did it it can only show a few topics at a time (you can change it from Relevance to Date and it'll show newer topics) but if Reltair were to add his own in, it'd work better.

Given how easy it was for me, this is child's play for him.

I added it to my site so you all can test out what I mean.

Plus it won't actually do to the links. Something I did messed up, but we do know it's possible to show the posts via title.

>>6 That's great that it works. Do you know if the load would be enough to significantly slow down the site if multiple people search at once? That is the only thing I am worried about.

If he had it working through Google itself, like my Bar, it would run through the Google servers first and greatly reduce any type of lag there could be.

But if he had it working through the site itself, I doubt there would be too much lag. If a load bar would lag us due to people using it, then one would assume us posting topics and posts would also cause it since posting will be done a lot more than searching.

>>9 You're comparing a site, which uses basically an edited version of 2chan and 4chan format, to a forum. "like my bar", you're assuming right from the start he could do it using Google.

But have you ever google searched 4chan threads, 2chan threads, ANY chan threads, or any threads that use the Kareha script?

No, I'm assuming that if Google could do it with limited results just from using a few links (Main and Main's "View all Threads" link) then it's easily assumed he could actually make his own.

He COULD use Google, but it would be a better end result if he just did it directly from his site itself. The entire argument was that it wasn't possible to search for any of the topics with a search bar and I just proved that wrong.

Exactly what this site uses is irrelevant to my main point. It's possible.

>>13 But you didn't prove anything at all. You used your site in the argument, but is it really the same as BBS? For this analogy to be correct, the two sites have to be really similar. But there are no similarities. So you haven't proven anything.

Exactly what this site uses is relevant, because of how you approach it in terms of coding.

Again, try to argue using the sites that does use the Kareha script, because otherwise, it's not going to convince anyone. Your site and BBS just differ greatly.

Or at least show that Google can find threads from this site or find threads from 4chan or 2chan or something.

Actually I used THIS site's links.
If you didn't actually USE the bar you have no room to argue. My site was used to embed the bar to be used, while it actually worked through Google and all links it used were from and for the BBS.

Thus it showed it pulling up specific topics in the search bar by keyword and names.

17 Name: Thiamor !ZPE1Q6VxaY : 2013-11-04 21:18 ID:nEOtAgZY [Del]

Again, it worked pulling up BBS topics.

Plus your "Or at least show that Google can find threads from this site or find threads from 4chan or 2chan or something." means you jumped the gun and didn't actually use the bar that I linked to. Thus all you really wanted to do is argue nonsensical bullshit because you want to prove me wrong so badly.

yeah ^^ that would be a convenient idea, i guess ^^
