Martial arts/taekwondo (12)

Does anyone to martial arts or taekwondo?? Cuz I feel like taekwondo is pretty useless compared to the others. Yes you do get stronger but you don't really defend yourself. They say taekwondo is just a marketing support to earn money. Cuz all you have to do to beat someone in taekwondo is punch them. They don't even use hands much. Not much blocking training too. What do you guys think? What are the best martial arts and is taekwondo useless??

I do taekwondo. And personally taekwondo is very useful in fights- but i don't recommend doing them(fights i mean). And if it's "All you have to do is to punch them" that's incorrect, the first question is, how do you get near them. I've been in numerous fights- which i'm not proud of, ofc. And i have never encountered once with me being hurt, depending on where and how you hurt someone is something, and any martial arts will teach you that- pinpoints, muscle curves, sensitive nerves etc. But overall taekwondo isn't as useless as it looks like.

But for a martial arts that's dedicated to fighting i would choose Muay Thai, I do mixed martial arts. Black belt in taekwondo, and 3 year experience with Muay Thai, and they do a lot of Phyisical Improvements (depending where you learn) and helps you cope up with pain overall.

But these are probably just my opinions, someone else may differ

And to you're question it really comes down to how good your taekwondo instructor/master is because like anything some people are good at teaching and some are bad at teaching, and a good part of it comes down to you and how dedicated you are in your own are training.

Also just to add there is not just one style Tae Kwon-Do out there, I,e -
International Taekwondo Federation ITF
World Taekwondo Federation WTF
Rhee taekwondo
and some other groups which may or may not be connected to them main groups

Just because I think you are sooooo wrong... Taekwondo if you get the flexibility you won't lose in long range.

Taekwondo requires space and balance. Its consider weak because it is easy to grab the legs and few get the speed and flexibility for clean hits. But remember... Legs are usually 2 times stronger then the rest of the body. Plain Taekwondo doesn't have much tricks, but unless the guy does karate any blocking on is side should result into a broken bone. Its like a bat if you use it on a intermediate level.

ITF Is one hell of one and trust me they uses punches in that. If my memory serves right. Still if you manage a sweeping of the legs or you don't fight people who grabs you have nice odds.

>>6 kinda proves my point. All we do is leg exercises, not much punches, not much self defence. It takes longer and more energy to kick then punch. As some people say all you need to do to defeat someone in taekwondo? Punch quickly.

It f#cking pisses me off when punks put ALL Karate in ONE GROUP.
Or like, ALL wrestling in ONE GROUP.

I mean, MA/MMA beside, basically anything with a teacher will be different from other things.
...
F#CK. That doesn't make any sense.
Hold up I got this!

Compare two classes of PreCal.
Two different teachers. Same grade level.
One "forces" her students to learn by making them read the problem then guiding them through the process of solving it.
The other one gives students the notes. Then goes through it. Then asks of the students of they don't get. If a kid doesn't get it then the teacher will help him/her.
Which is better? Depends on the kid, right?

There is no one form of ANYTHING. And if there is, IT WILL NOT BE TAUGHT THE SAME.

I am not roasting anyone out. Just my opinion.

I'm done.

You know, on a different level...
One time I went up against a 28 year old black belt in Tae Kwon Do (He was like, one of the highest black belts, I didn't know what exactly he was, BUT pretty high rank). He wasn't crappy either, in fact this guy was a killer. When he attacks, he attacks HARD.

So the first match. He demolished me.
Second match. It was a tie. I was limping for a week and a half though...
Third match. I....WON!

It is SO difficult to even punch a Tae Kwon Do bad@$$ because their legs are all over the place. I figured out how to come close enough to attack but was too slow and tired because of, you know, DEM LEGS. The last match I reacted faster then him so that's how I won.

F#ck, forgot to mention, I was a brown belt in Karate.
Basically Tae Kwon Do VS Karate.

I was in taekwondo. they do teach defense, it's not a marketing. it's a mix of martial arts and such. You must know at least these three-5 different things to go into testing to get your next belt. It's not by just color, you get a stripe in the middle, i can't remember but i think it's called recommended then you test for the next solid. but it's different when you get to red and black.
First you learn form, not half assed but the full thing. It can be anywhere from 50-100 moves depending on which rank you are in.
Second is self defense, we must learn at least 3 advanced to test for.
third is sparing, this includes a point system and warnings, if you don't have sparing gear, you must test with someone who doesn't have theirs either. light tap or no touch rule. if you touch you are out and you'll get negative points.
forth is board breaking. you usually learn a feet and hand move each time, the roughness of the board is based on age and ranking.
at the tournaments, if you don't wanna compete, you can go there like you would a dojo. fifth is weapons, YOU DON'T ALWAYS FIGHT WITH THEM.
they have forms you learn, if you are a new person to weapons, they will most likely give you foam or light wood.
if you are a pro, you have to use metal.
depending on the weapon, you can spar with it, but it wouldn't be normal sparing, it would be weapon sparing same rules apply.
