Metal & Core Music Thread (242)

1 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-10-10 18:49 ID:aukLw8KV [Del]

Hey guys, I am aware there are already a few failed metal threads, but I thought I'd try lumping them all together and making this. Just wondering if there's any other metal/core fans in here besides me. Rules:

1.) Be accepting of others' viewpoints on bands, and nice enough to realize that even though you like Deicide and they like BMTH, neither of you is wrong to like either of them.

2.) No band bashing. I like both metal and core music, but do not like certain bands due to their sound or message.

3.) No flaunting being an elitist. The Big Four are not the only good metal bands in the world, and even if someone doesn't like them (such as me, I only like Slayer from them) there is no excuse to make fun of or belittle them. That just makes you look like an asshole.

4.) Have fun and post links to your favorite songs/bands if someone comes asking about them! :D

My favorites are Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, earlier Senses Fail, Nekrogoblikon, whitechapel, In Flames, IWABO, Thy Art Is Murder, Northlane, and Rings of Saturn, among others. Yes, I mostly dig core, it happens.

What's YOUR favorite bands/songs, and why?

2 Name: Bulma!gfkvD0.aME : 2013-10-10 19:16 ID:LYzdi0kN [Del]

Im up for the thread, its whether others will be. The metal threads have never kicked off unfortunately.
Im not a huge Metalcore fan, and I'll try my best not to band bash. I prefer straight up-your-ass Metal, Grindcore and Hardcore Punk related genres/sub-genres.
Are you Australian Ao? I wouldn't think many people outside Aus would know Northlane.
I hate this whole 'its uncool to like the Big 4' thing. I will just go ahead and say Metallica are my absolute favourite band, whether it be for their music or the nostalgia I get out of it. Shout outs to Megadeth and Slayer though.
Glad there is a regular who's into this stuff. Yata likes alot of it actually, but we seem to only talk about Indie and Emo bands ahahaha

I guess I could list a few bands I like as to 'spark up conversation'.

Metal -
Metallica
Trivium
Machine Head
Megadeth
Slayer
Cannibal Corpse
Obituary
Power Trip
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Motorhead
Unearth
(All fairly generic I know...)

Hardcore -
Black Flag
Minor Threat
Expire
Trapped Under Ice
Cold World
Rotting Out
Turnstile
Down To Nothing
Infest
Ceremony
Harms Way
Champion
Have Heart
Cruel Hand
Disengage
Youth Of Today

Other/Indie/Emo (That are often affiliated with the Hardcore scene) -
Title Fight
Touche Amore
Endless Heights
Tigers Jaw
Citizen
Balance & Composure
The Story So Far (guilty pleasure)
Such Gold

Grind, Sludge, Doom -
Napalm Death
Insect Warfare
Pretty Little Flower
Code Orange Kids
AcxDC
Brutality Will Prevail

Official metal/core music thread is official. Good OP.

As for why we don't really talk metal much Bulma, that's cause I'm not particularly knowledgeable about most metal and other genres just appeal to me more. lol

That aside, here's stuff I do enjoy. My post-hardcore list would dominate most of it and I've talked about those groups elsewhere so I'll try keeping this to metal.

Animals as Leaders: Tosin Abasi. Nuff said.

Atomship: kinda more like alt metal with some proggy elements but holy fuck Chad Kent's drumming. All the yes.

Barrow: great scramz with some sludgy post-metal influence (and in their earlier work, post-rock). Made a thread for em a while back, got minimal response. You guys should check it.

Boris: This group has done nearly every genre known to man and their metal/stoner rock stuff is supposed to be quite good. Haven't gotten around to most of it yet cause their discog is humongous but I'm sure it's solid.

Chevelle: Alt metal/hard rock. Have a huge soft spot for these guys.

Cloudkicker: Also made a thread for this dude. Instrumental metal that drills its way into your head in equal amounts of hypnotic and headbang. Check out Beacons, it will blow you away.

Cyclamen: Djapanese Djent. Dude's vocals are hit or miss but when they hit they hit hard. His falsetto is fucking amazing.

Defeater: Okay, I included some hardcore. "Cowardice" is probably one of the most emotional vocal performances I've ever heard.

Glassjaw: Worship and Tribute is a perfect album. There is not a single flaw on any moment of that record. Ya dig?

Haken: quirky prog metal/prog rock

La Dispute: Again, have a soft spot for this stuff. "Said The King to the River" and "The Last Lost Continent" are fantastic songs. Have yet to check out Wildlife and I suppose I'll have to do that soon.

Maximum The Hormone: Changing genres from nu-metal to punk to cheesy electronic J-pop effortlessly and in an instant, this band is a must listen. Prepare to party hard and have fun. Song topics range from pedophiliac ghosts named Louisiana Bob and the love of sperm.

O'Brother: Great group. Vocals may be iffy for some, but they're damn good.

Periphery: Yatabro is an obnoxious Periphery fan and I will not deny that the "djent" thing got out of control awhile back....doesn't mean I like it any less though. lol

Scale The Summit: More instrumental metal. Fantastic riffs and great use of layering, though I'd argue some of their compositions need a bit more work.

System of a Down: I was never a huge SOAD fan, but I do like their stuff.

The Chariot: Band is nuts. Don't usually care for this stuff but I bought One Wing on a whim last year and it has huge replay value. Sucks to see them break up right when I find out about them.

Thrice: Thrice is my favorite band, hands down. Their early stuff was post-hardcore with metal-inspired riffs. See The Illusion of Safety for instance. Great album.

Thursday: Again, wasn't a huge fanboy of these guys, but I do like them quite a bit.

Tool: Made the Tool thread for the BBS too. Amazing compositions and musicianship.

>>3 Been meaning to check out both Animals As Leaders and Glassjaw for a LONG time, where do I start?
Besides 'Said The King To The River' and their tracks with Touche Amore on their split with the same band, I could never deal with La Dispute. To whiney for me.
Never got to see The Chariot either, mental band.

For AAL I'd suggest starting with their self-titled debut album. Definitely start with Worship and Tribute for Glassjaw. Both are great first listens and also have humongous replay value.

7 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-10-11 08:44 ID:if99X0Ae [Del]

I haven't heard of half of these bands xD. I'm not australian, but my vocalist mentor liked them and told me to check it out for good fry examples. Its not that I don't like the big 4, I just like other bands more. Unfortunately I can only use false chord and tunnel throat growl techniques, and hope to figure out how to use ny arhetinoids (sp?) And put some sort of power to it. Are we the only 3 metal fans here?

Post-hardcore:
SF

Metal/death metal/black metal:
Nekrogoblikon
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Cannabis Corpse
In Flames

Metalcore/deathcore:
Whitechapel
We Butter The Bread With Butter
Iwrestledabearonce
Bring Me The Horizon (occasionally)
Chelsea Grin
Death of a Tyrant
Winds of Plague

I'll probably think of more later. Again. Ill have to check out some of these guys. Anybody else know of Machinehead?

8 Name: neeon !9untMbO1X6 : 2013-10-12 03:54 ID:h7pGF90p [Del]

>>3 Wow, it's not often I see someone mention Thrice and Thursday. Right on.
>>7 I used to listen to Machinehead alot during the "Through the Ashes of the Empire" days. Although the only song of theirs I really listen to now is The Blood,The Sweat, The Tears. I guess I was just more of an Avenged, Atreyu, Bleeding Through, It Dies Today guy haha. But yah.. iwrestledabearonce is bloody awesome, I have no Idea how it took me so long to listen to them.

9 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-10-12 13:23 ID:aukLw8KV [Del]

>>8 the thing with iwabo that kind of upsets me is that krista had to leave. Don't get me wrong, being a mother is WAY more important than being lead vocalist in a band, but I'm sad she left nonetheless. Hopefully courtney (new vocalist) will be able to do cool stuff too. I didn't much get into MH but I did like Beautiful Mourning a few years back. Its been a while. It took me a long time to look up IWABO as well xD any favorites by them?

10 Name: neeon !9untMbO1X6 : 2013-10-12 22:35 ID:h7pGF90p [Del]

>>9 My definite favorite from IWABO would have to be "See You In Shell" or "You Know That Ain't Them Dog's Real Voices" Because it is absolutely off the wall haha Screaming, downtuned guitars, then Bam! Jazz interlude. Just awesome stuff. I do know that even though I have only listened to them since last year, that I do prefer the first vocalist, it just feels like her screams were more refined, no hate to the new one because she is a pretty good vox herself.

11 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-10-13 00:25 ID:aukLw8KV [Del]

>>10 agreed xD those are some pretty good ones. If you listen closely, you can hear an almost inaudible change in the sound consistancy of Krystas screaming. She alternates inhales and exhales. When I found that out I bout shat two and a half bricks. That's difficult to do for just about anyone. And to perform with it? Like dang. While inhales are considered a joke version of screaming, I still think its a cool ability (I learned exhales first and I can't do it at all xD) to have. Agreed, with Courtney its cool, but it feels like they made too big a shift. The spontaniety (if that's even a word) of it feels lost. Ulrich Firelord, Breaker of Mountains for example, versus the new Firebees. Its just... meh.

Anybody got any good death/black/slam metal groups I can check out?

13 Name: Bulma!gfkvD0.aME : 2013-10-13 11:19 ID:NqqQWVrb [Del]

>>7 The Blackening is a fucking killer album, no doubt my favourite MH album.

>>12 Ive never been into black metal or anything related but I did take a liking to Children Of Bodom at one point. There first 3 or so albums are fairly solid, especially if you're into widdly diddly guitar leads/solos. Dimmu Borgir aren't too bad either but Ive found Black Metal and such isnt my thing. There is another band called Silencer. You're gonna have to read up about this bands history because the vocalist is actually really interesting.....but fucked up interesting.

Since this is a Metal thread I goota talk about Metalocalypse/Dethklok. Anyone like it/them?

14 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-10-13 17:25 ID:aukLw8KV [Del]

>>13 yeah xD they're alright. I don't normally go out of my way to listen to them but that show was hilarious. The only two episodes I was awake enough to remember though was something about the new DethPhone being too spiky and the Blues episode

I still have yet to learn just how many subgenres there are in the "rock" category of music, including the core & metal genres. Probably like hundreds, right? I dunno.

Can somebody name a few?

I only know of:
Heavy metal
death metal
brutal death metal
black metal
slam metal
technical death metal
melodic death metal
speed metal
thrash metal
metal
classic metal

metalcore
mathcore
deathcore
technical deathcore
post-hardcore
I suppose pop punk would go here too, in a way
easycore

...and that's it o.o

46 Name: astin : 2013-11-17 02:53 ID:aJUsrfNf [Del]

>>45 there's post-metal/post-rock which mayormay not be like post-hardcore idk.

47 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2013-11-17 03:49 ID:VJkr+4Qq [Del]

>>45 Heh, you're missing:

Groove Metal
Glam Metal
Prog Metal
Speed Metal
Power Metal
Symphonic Metal
Neo-classical Metal(not quite the same as Symphonic Metal)
Doom Metal
Folk Metal
Funk Metal
Nu Metal
Rap Metal
Alternative Metal
Experimental Metal
Avant-garde Metal
Gothic Metal
Post Metal
Sludge Metal
Viking Metal
Pirate Metal

...and since we're goin' there...

Grindcore
Gorecore
Powerviolence
Crust Punk (no, it's metal)
Melodic Hardcore

...and, Djent. Maybe.

And probably a whole bunch more. So much metal, so little time.

48 Name: Ao!xbaEGjJEyU : 2013-11-18 15:45 ID:aukLw8KV [Del]

>>47 ah yes, the ever-glorious metal of great influence. There's also some other... graphic ones, and that can be taken multiple ways. I always considered Djent a technique, but I could be wrong. I wonder if anybody has ever taken the time to count them all. That'd be nuts.

And for future reference, BVB and BOTDF are not metal. BVB willingly admits they're glam rock, and BOTDF is a sick child rapists' terrible talentless attempt at electronica with adult themes and gobbled up by prepubescent girls. I welcome neither here. Just thought id put that out there.

Anybody know of any good local bands near them? I've got a progressive death metal/deathcore band near me, Death of a Tyrant (not Death Tyrant or Tyrant of Death) whose youtube channel is called doatnc. What do you guys think?

I'd say post-metal/post-rock are quite different from post-hardcore, but that doesn't mean there aren't bands out there who can blend them well.

Ao and Neige covered all the metal subgenres I know.

>>47 >>45

Thrash
Thrash Hardcore (Crossover)
Dubcore/Trancecore
Screamo (I hate that name)
Noise Punk
Emo ( Iguess could go under this if were putting Pop Punk in here)
Emotional Hardcore
Down-Tempo Hardcore
Sludge Hardcore
Doom Hardcore

Okay Im done. Ao and Neige have covered all basis.
There is this website that is set out shows all these genres branching of each other. If I can find it I'll post it here.

Lookin at it from the outside in, it seems to me lefties are stuck attempting to adjust to ambidexterous things because the world (for some strange reason) is seemingly built towards right-handed people. Which sucks.

Anyone into Mastodon?

I've been listening to Remission non-stop for the last couple of days. You know how sometimes you kinda neglect a band's earlier albums because you love their new stuff so much, but then when you've over-listened to their new stuff you listen to their old stuff and you love it and it's awesome and you fall in love with the band all over again?

Yeah. That's me and Mastodon right now.

>>104 Crack the Skye is the one people tend to rave about, but for you, I'd recommend starting with Remission or Leviathan, seeing as you seem more into the heavier side of things, and their discog get's increasingly light as you go on.

All of their work is gold though, so choosing which one you think is the best is more opinionated - compared to a lot of other bands, anyway - and you could start anywhere, really. 2 years ago I would've chosen The Hunter As my favourite, but now I'm not too sure.

Anyway, I think you'll love them.

In the mornings, I have class. If you can call it that. The class in question is closer to a series of bland videos that lead into an equally boring set of questions. The questions are supposed to be teaching, but don't do all that great of a job. To spice things up a bit, I play music in the background of the unappealing voices.

Considering I was right next to a swarm of freshmen, it felt like a good time for Infant Annihilator while I listened to some chick talk about parabolas and overly long equation. Not bad for math. Kind of a reward, I suppose, for not lighting myself on fire. But it's Monday here, and under the blue sunshine, Ao remains a hermit.

Anybody here a fan of Brutality Will Pravail?

They came to Australia last May and they played to about 100 and still ripped the place to shreds. Old faithfuls like Warbrain and Shackles made an appearance before hand and I was little nervous to see what BWP could pull off next, following those brilliant acts. But ripping straight into a classic opener of Metalica - For Whom The Bell Tolls it was clear who were kings here.

The band itself I like although I couldn't get into the first album (Forgotten Soul) and their latest one either. Root Of All Evil and Scatter The Ashes on the other hand I can listen to over and over and still get that evil and content feeling you get after a Behemoth record (which I quite enjoyed doing).

Anyone into Triptykon, or, by short extension, Celtic Frost?

Admittedly I don't know a lot about the latter (other than one of my friends describing the album Mega Therion as "weird and repetitive"), but after listening to about half of Triptykon's (whose founder, Thomas Gabriel Fischer used to be part of Celtic Forst, Hellhammer and Apollyon Sun) newest album Melana Chasmata during a media class, I went home and downladed their self-titled debut, and, admittedly speaking as a former metalhead who's since ventured elsewhere in the music world, it's gotta be one of the best metal albums I've heard in quite a while.

They're like this amazing blend of doom metal and groove metal, and also to some extent, black metal. Crushingly slow/mid pace riffs, a really dark atmosphere and some elements of some more mellow genre's such as opera and ambience in there as well. It somehow manages to come off as evil and moody, but not melodramatic or cheesy or over-the-top, which is pretty awesome considering how much cheese there is in a lot of extreme metal these days.

So yeah, I highly recommend. And if anyone is into Celtic Frost here, where would you recommend I start?

Rumours floating around of a Pantera reunion, interesting thought that. I dont know about everyone else but Id love to get the chance to see tunes like Domination and Floods live.

THE DEBATE -
Who would they get to fill in on guitar? Why? and why would that be good/bad?

I think it'd be cool to get Kerry King or someone like Matt Heafy/Rob Halford to do it just as a real 'tribute' to Dime (RIP). Kerry King would also put an interesting twist on the songs Dime wrote, which would be awesome

I've really been digging this album called "...And They Shall Take up Serpents" by a band called Byzantine.

I'mma call it melodic thrash, but it's also been labelled as groove metal and prog metal. They don't really follow genre conventions, though, but their music is very noticeably thrash influence. I particularly like their melodic solos and occasional clean singing.

It generally satisfies all of my basic metal needs; heaviness, technicality, and melody.

Okay so I gave Sunn O))) another crack, a different album this time, and understood why I was so confused on my first listen. The album I had been listening to was alot of etheral and minimal feedback, not the low end drone of typical Sunn. La Mort Noir Dans Esch/Alzette is so haunting, heavy and beautiful. Its guitar tone heaven. I would be really interested in seeing them perform live as the stories Ive heard of and about their live shows are insane. Supposedly you have to wear industrial ear muffs at all times and things can shake and fall over from the sheer noise they make. Good stuff

Bump

I've been getting back into full on death metal lately, mostly Deicide, Bloodbath, Immolation, Death, Carcass and Edge of Sanity. I'm downloading Testament's and Possessed's discog tonight, maybe Decapitation's as well.

Should be fun.

>>156 I used to like a little death metal, mainly Obituary, Cannibal Corpse and Death.

Been listening to alot of thrash metal recently though and need more bands similar to Slayer, Power Trip and Kreator. Any recommendations?

158 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2014-09-11 04:04 ID:O+5iUSmk [Del]

>>157 In that category, Testament's The Gathering is one album I've heard that's definitely worth a recommendation. Their debut The Legacy is a pretty decent little thrash album too, if you don't mind a bit of 80's cheese.

Enter the Grave by Evile is one of my all time favourite thrash albums - it just weirdly does 80's thrash better than any 80's band ever did, in my opinion. Their subsequent albums aren't nearly as good, pretty much shameless (but kinda awesome) rip-offs of old-school Metallica.

There's also a band called Warbringer that is just straight up thrash goodness, and another called Vektor that plays what could probably be described as "progressive thrash," strange as it sounds, but mostly I'd recommend Enter the Grave and The Gathering.

Never heard of Power Trip, by the way. I'll probably download an album or something soon.

Been meaning to check out Testament and Evile for some time now, thanks for the suggestion. Power Trip are a sort of Hardcore/Thrash Crossover band but they write songs that sound pretty metal to me. Check out their debut Manifest Decimation or their EP Armageddon Blues if you feel so inclined.

Yo, here's our established metal/core thread, for all your heavy metal and core discussion needs. Quite making or posting in shitty threads.

New Iron Maiden. Awesome, right? Probably the only band who could write an album while simultaneously recording and somehow have the result not be a mess. *cough*st anger*cough*

Also probably the only band who could get me so excited for a fucking 90 minute record. I can barely get through Tool albums in one sitting, but this one is amazingly listenable. Probably favourite track

Other than that, my current obsessions are Downfall of Gaia and Melbourne's own Hope Drone. I knew that post-black-metal existed, but fuck if I didn't dismiss it as pretentious as same-y. Nope. It's amazing.

>>210 Hardwired was alright, the other one seemed to be better, but I only listened to it in the background and didn't pay much attention to it at all. Metallica news doesn't really excite me that much anymore. I guess I'll listen to the album when it comes out. Similar with Opeth's new album, although I'll definitely be giving that a listen - I was pretty iffy about the track's that they released, but I'm hoping I'll be able to enjoy them more in the context of the full album.

I am really looking forward to Alcest's new album, and I'll probably be going for the debut album launch for a Tasmanian blackened doom (maybe) band called Departe - at first mostly for the epic lineup they've put together for it, but after I actually gave the teaser track's a listen I found that they actually sound awesome. Other than that I can't think of any metal release I'm particularly pumped for.

I just listened to Dragonforce after a long time. Most of it's just pretty okay, but they used to really kill it with the power ballads. Starfire and Trail of Broken Hearts are fucking great tunes.

So, we're nearly at the end of 2017 - and what a year its been for music. I haven't listened to so many new albums (that I enjoyed) in a long time. Outside of the 'heavy metal' bracket, there have been some fantastic releases that have really caught my attention, most notably Deafcult (a shoegaze band from Brisbane) and quite out of my spectrum, Buzz Kull (electronic darkwave stuff). I guess these things happen as your music taste expands, but I never thought that these artists would be competing for my albums of the year.
In terms of 'heavy metal' (bracket) releases, there has been no shortage of fantastic albums - from King Gizzard's three (excluding the lame collaboration) LP's in one year; to the blistering follow up to Power Trip's debut. Below I've written a short list of LP's I enjoyed (and remembered) at this time:

P.S if I've missed anything, or you have listened to something worth sharing (from 2017) - I'm keen to hear new things! Enlighten me!

Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
Thrash revivalists, a fantastic 2nd album from an ever consistent modern band

Elder - Reflection of a Floating World
I've already spoken about this one, I dont feel like it needs much more to be said about it. It's self explanatory, and probably going to be my AOTY.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Microtonal, Murder and 'xxxx'
I'm calling the final LP 'xxxx' at this stage as a single for ANOTHER new record was released and very well received. I expect big things. Microtonal and Murder were both amazing - Sketches not so much.

Idylls - The Barn
FFO Converge amongst other aspects of noise rock and chaotic hardcore. I can't boast about this bands prestige enough, one of the tightest (and yet so loose) bands I have ever been fortunate enough to see. This new albums rips, I highly recommend checking out their work

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Luciferian Towers
I feel like these don't fit in anywhere in particular, but they have been associated with the likes of Sunn and Earth before so I assume their worlds have collided at one time or another. I must admit, Im new to GY!PE (or whatever the acronym fans use) but I found this album very soothing and interesting

Big Brave - Andor
Again, at a loss for words as to where these guys would fit into the spectrum of genre, post-rock with elements of doom or ambient? This band shares GY!BE's hometown, it seems there is something in the water up in Montreal... another serious contender for AOTY

Hobo Magic - The World Today
Groove, tone and riffs. Hobo Magic are a band I was lucky enough to stumble across at a gig a long time before this album was released - and always knew they had the potential to do something massive. This is it, the world today, stoner rock at it's finest.

Zong - S/T
This one is still digesting for me, but so far I've been taken on a wild ride with each listen and gaining more appreciation for it. Will definitely be seeing these guys with Hobo Magic later this year.

Yet to be released is a Causa Sui LP (hyped!) and Sleep's new album, but maybe we'll have to wait until next year? Hopefully before they play in Australia...

>>235 Will definitely see you at Sleep man!

I love Get Scared so much. They also put on a hell of a live show. I've seen them twice.

They're also awesome dudes off-stage. I've met them on many occassions.

>>238 speaking of Godspeed You! Black Emperor

I just bought tickets for their gig in Melbourne next year. It's a present to myself, the day before my 21st birthday! They're playing in a recital centre, which I had to book tickets that were allocated to a SEAT within the venue. I've never been to something quite like this, it seems the centre is used for mostly classical music and theatre - which makes me even more excited as the acoustics will be fantastic!
