Similar to the Smaller Missions Thread, this thread is to be used to post simple mission specifically related to protecting the environment. Examples may be to not litter, plant a tree, use less water, etc.
An index will be posted after a while that can be updated often with a list of all the suggestions.

Btw, as with the SMT, it's fine to give an idea its own thread if it requires frequent discussions or assistance to complete. I'll add legitimate links to the index with off-thread missions.

Operation Luminosity (from MKOLLER)
So over the past several months, I have taken on a little initiative of sorts. Every month, I would buy between one and three LED lightbulbs and replace older incandescent and fluorescent bulbs in my family's house. I want to encourage others to do the same, as well as point out the many things to consider:
BULB TYPES AND COST
LED bulbs come in multiple types, each with different costs.
- A19: $6-7 - These are replacement for 40 Watt devices. This includes most desk lamps. LED bulbs use about 6 to 9 watts each.
- BR30: $11-14 - These are replacements for 65 Watt recessed lights. LED bulbs use about 10 to 13 Watts.
- PAR38: $25-30 - These are replacements for 95 Watt outside floodlights. LED bulbs use 13 to 20 Watts. The upside to these bulbs is they last 20x as long as traditional halogen floodlights. The downside is these bulbs only produce 1050 lumens, while Halogens can produce up to 1790 lumens, which is nearly twice as bright.
- General Purpose: $8-10 - These are replacements for 60 Watt bulbs, the most common bulb people think of when they think of a light bulb. LED bulbs use only 9 to 11 Watts.
LIGHT COLOR
Most bulbs have a color scale. Bulbs which fall between 2700K and 3500K are considered "warm bulbs." They give off a white-orange glow, similar to old incandescent bulbs. Bulbs between 5000K and 6000K are considered "cool bulbs." These give off a white-blue light.
COMPARISON TO FLUORESCENT
Right now, a CFL 60 Watt equivalent at half-price uses only 13 Watts, which is a mere 2 Watts more than the LED counterpart. Things to remember are that fluorescent bulbs contain poisonous mercury, take several minutes to reach full brightness, and last only half as long as LED bulbs. Furthermore, 2 Watts an hour, 8 hours a day, 365 days a year is 5840 Watts a year. So the difference increases exponentially with the number of bulbs. This is why LED conversion is so important.

Plastic, Glass, Paper, Cardboard, Batteries and electronics are recyclable. A quick google can show the places near you where you can dispose of such items. (this makes up about 28% of household trash)
For organic waste there are food waste bins, call services, or you could get a compost bin. (this makes up about 49% of household trash)
Place lamps in corners to allow light to reflect from multiple surfaces.
Lock closed windows to allow them to seal shut, preventing heat loss.
Set computers to sleep or turn off the monitor when not in use.
Sweep patio, sidewalk, and driveway rather than hosing down with water.
Use rain barrels and mulch to help reduce outdoor water use.
Hang light coloured shades to block some of the sun's rays while allowing in light.

http://www.sciencealert.com/microbeads-are-causing-the-fish-we-eat-to-become-toxic-study-finds
Microbeads and chemicals such as parabens are poisoning fish, and in turn, poisoning us.
With bottom feeding fish being poisoned, a buncha stuff happens to the food chain, causing the chain to be drastically affected, basically killing our ocean ecosystem.

Heyo~ I haven't been on here in a year~
Anyway, I was fairly certain this belongs in this thread;;
Ecosia is a search engine I learned about recently. It operates about the same as google, except that apparently for the profits that it earns, trees are planted!
That seemed worded a bit strange, but you get the point right?
Feel free to add it as your default engine at Ecosia.org if that sounds nice to you!

Look up the term Bio-magnification, this is basically the same thing, as these toxins go up the food chain they became more toxic.

Eat less cow? ...Cows are one of the highest methane gas producers. Because of their grassy diet and stomachs, they breathe out (and fart out) methane. Even their feces produce a lot of methane.
Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas (one of the gases that make up the thermal blanket causing global warming).

34 Name: Kazeki : 2016-12-29 08:18 ID:LttpjUYh [Del]
>>33 We don't go out to hunt them, so that is not the case. We domesticated cows. If we eat more, that makes the demand high and more will be produced.
