What are young adults? (8)

1 Name: jaxman : 2012-11-12 18:13 ID:iih5/t+5 [Del]

The question came to me after some posts here.

Who are considered as young adults?

If I remember correctly, in psychology and in other science, young adults are those in the early stages of their adulthood (19-35), but apparently in other areas it persists that young adults are of age 15-25, in between teenage years and adults. I remember in high school, my teachers emphasizes on "you're adults now" when most of the class surely can't live independently.

What has happened? Was it popular media trying to lower the age of adulthood? Is this somewhat catering to children's/teenager's want to be adults?

Based on "young adult" books, I'd say late teens. I'm in my early twenties and a young adult book is too easy of a read for me. I read it too quickly. I've never been a strong reader either.

However, I'd think that early to mid twenties can get away with reading those books.

I don't think high school students are developed enough to call them any kind of adult. Based on my experience, that is.

Do if you're talking about mentally, I'd say college students or somewhere between when you don't completely depend on your parents and when you don't depend on them at all.

Like most things it depends on the context. As a blanket term I'd go with a biological definition: an Adult is some one in the final stages of their development cycle, where most of the structures of the organism's body have grown to their largest that those parts will be in that individual's life time. A mature child is still not an adult because there is still room for growth for them.

>>1 I think your right about teenagers wanting to be adults and that this label has been used more and more to refer to older teens (~15-19) than literal young adults (~18-30). I find it fascinating (though admittedly annoying at times) that words are constantly shifting in their meaning. I think this is one of those terms.
