In school, have you ever thought "This book would make an interesting anime!"?
WELL NOW YOU CAN!!! (even though i never said what you can do...)
This thread is for books (any language) that you think would make a good anime.
I think that The Strange seems to be a good choice as the main character is so indifferent, like some of my favorite anime characters (Rin Okumara, Shizu-chan, and Kei Nagai). And it has heavy themes of existentialism (nothing really matters).
Do you have any? What are they and why, if you don't know why that's cool to.

Maybe the rangers apprentice, the seventh tower, enders game? :P

Hmm.. Lolita, just because. Those of you who know the connotation but haven't read it, don't pass judgement. The Count of Monte Cristo would be epic as an anime.

Also, existentialism is not the belief that nothing matters. That's Nihilism. Existentialism is defined as n) a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will, and Kierkegaard is considered the father of it.

Sorry, just had to call you out on it.

Ready Player One would be a fantastic anime. You could do so much in the format of animation, the story is worthy of a high-concept anime like Cowboy Bebop or Death Note, and it's about video games!

The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher is the first series I'd turn into an anime. Also, many of Asimov's works come to mind, though I say that with the realization that no anime could ever do those novels justice. Oh, and since I'm rolling with the best of Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Steelheart by William C. Dietz could make a fantastic anime.

(That is NOT the Steelheart written by Brandon Sanderson. They're two very different books.)

Asimov would be good! You're right though, the anime would never do the work justice. Maybe an anime where the characters embody the ideals of philosophers? The series Lost did this, but this wouldn't have to be on an island. For those of you who didn't realise, look for Rousseau's idea of the Noble Savage in the character named, no less, Rousseau. John Locke embodies the ideas of the philosopher Locke, and Jack Shepard is a blatant reference to Christ and CS Lewis (who was called Jack the Shepard by his friends on occasion). The anime would be like this, but more of a 'what's happening in real life and their interactions' (sorry for the story line that sounds like DRRR!), or we could come up with something completely different (maybe the main character isn't tied to any philosopher and struggles to find his worldview and create his own philosophy?).

>>9 Woops, sorry. Then again, you're the one who hasn't responded to my Snap...

Also, your idea about philosophers kinda makes me think of Hetalia. Can you imagine a comedy/slice of life anime where all the major characters were the personifications of different philosophies or concepts? Nihilism, Confucius, Capitalism, and Plato share an apartment in the city? That shit would write itself.

>>10 Shit, I'd watch that. Probably just get the philosophers themselves, though.

>>10 That would be hands down (so long as the director and the writers didn't mess up the philosophy or just be stupid) the best anime of whichever season it came out in. Imagine the drama they would get into! Kierkegaard vs Nihilists? The Milesian posse v Democritus and some of the other natural philosophers? Capitalism v Marxism v Keynesian economics? It would have the double benefit of teaching the masses philosophy and being educational too

Mate if you want to start a Snap streak I'm down. I just didn't reply because.. I don't know really

>>12 Haha I'm just trying to guilt you. I'm bad about about keeping Snap streaks alive. I went backpacking a week or two ago and killed all of mine... again.

And yes, that anime would be so great to watch. I wonder if it could be well-received by audiences who don't have much knowledge of all the philosophers themselves; that'd really be up to the writers' and director's skill.

>>10 I'd totally be willing to watch that.

On the fantasy side, I think the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson would work well as an anime. It's unique setting and complex magic system would make it impractical/difficult to pull off as live-action. But it would be perfect as an anime.

>>10 That sounds like a stupid idea that just might work, I love it.

The Girl with all the Gifts. That would be so perf, I'd love it so much.
