*New* Your favorite book and why you would recommend it. (35)

1 Name: David : 2015-08-12 12:55 ID:jVnqASiK [Del]

I can't find a single post like this that is organized and all, and i'm constantly searching for a good book so names aren't really important as i'd have to go on google and find out what it is about.
Here is hopefully a thread that will catch on.
Post your favorite book(s) and the reason you would recommend it (in organized paragraphs please.)

1) Name of book (and author preferably don't sweat it if you can't recall the name)

2) Genre (optional)

2) Brief description (or if long keep it in paragraphs and NO SPOILERS)

3)Additional comments about it (optional)

2 Name: David : 2015-08-12 13:05 ID:jVnqASiK [Del]

I'll start

1) Conn Iggulden, The Conqueror Series.

2) Action, Suspense.

3) It starts with the story of Ghenghis Khan and follows up with his son.

"An epic tale of a great and heroic mind; his action-packed rule; and how in conquering one-fifth of the world’s inhabited land, he changed the course of history forever."

4) Really gripping story, it amazed me how intelligent and smart the mongols were, Ghenghis Khank conquered 1/5th of the world and he started with nothing.
Every new war tactic they used amazed me and mindblowed me, would really recommend the series for people that like suspense, mindblowness, and action.

It is mostly historically accurate apart from a few details which the author changed to make it be story-like and interesting to read, it is told from a first/third person viewpoint of their daily lives, like any good ol' fiction story.
What is best is, at the end of each book the author tells you what parts of the book were made up and adds additional comments on how it was actually like.

Here is the book order:
1) Wolf of the Plains (starts when Ghenghis was a boy)
2) Lords of the Bow (best one and the first one I read)
3) Bones of the Hills
4) Empire of Silver
5) Conqueror

Just fixed numbering, only required ones is 1) and 3) though telling why you liked it in no. 4) is pretty much the reason of the thread.

1) Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes

3) War is coming. In a land divided into three kingdoms, old resentments ignite when a young lord slays a merchant boy of the neighboring and long-oppressed Paelsia. Hungry for justice and power, northernmost kingdom Limeros allies with Paelsia, and both swear to bring the extravagantly wealth southernmost kingdom, Auranos, to its knees.
But feuding kingdoms are only the backdrop for the personal journeys of the young people whose lives are upended by the conflict. Princess Cleo of Auranos struggles to be a perfect princess, but her headstrong will to secure safety and happiness for herself and her loved ones thwarts her efforts. Jonas of Paelsia loses his brother to an arrogant young lord and vows to seek vengeance for him. Princess Lucia of Limeros conceals a dangerous secret from her family. Her brother, Prince Magnus, yearns to prove himself to his formidable father and tries to suppress his love for someone he cannot have.

4) I just couldn't stop reading them. The characters of the story evolve depending on what happens to them so that they are not unidimensional. Because of that, you get to feel empathy for them, if they suffer you suffer, you can feel what they feel. Apart from that, the plot is also great because sometimes you just can't expect what is going to happen. As you end a chapter you have to start with the next one. As I always like a bit of romance as well, this book has a little bit of it so that there is a romantic plot but not filling the whole story, which is very nice because in some other books you get really tired of cheesy couples.
(I'm sorry for the spelling or grammatical mistakes)

1) Night Watch by Terry Pratchett
2) Fantasy
2) 'Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come round again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes.'

For a policeman, there can be few things worse than a serial killer at loose in your city. Except, perhaps, a serial killer who targets coppers, and a city on the brink of bloody revolution. The people have found their voice at last, the flags and barricades are rising...And the question for a policeman, an officer of the law, a defender of the peace, is:

Are you with them, or are you against them?
(Goodreads)

3) If the blurb did not make sense, then here's here. Basically, we have a policeman here who's catching a mad murderer, but things get out of hand when they accidentally time travel to the past when the city of Ankh-Morpork was on a brink of a revolution. Imagine Les Miserables but with time-travel and assassinations. It's an interesting take on revolutions in general that sometimes are plain funny in retrospect. Funny but heartfelt, this is my favorite novel of all time.

1) will grayson, will grayson by john green and david levithan
2)Genre: young adult problem novel
3)One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens—both named Will Grayson—are about to cross paths. As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical.
4)I found this book extremely relate-able, especially if you're in the lgbt community or have struggled with depression in the past.

1. The Name of the Wind by Peter Rothfuss

2. Young adult sci-fi/fantasy/romance/action (alot)

3. The story has a unique way of storytelling, as it is told as a story to a scribe who essentially comes across a retired legendary hero and you get to see how he came to be, and i have a feeling that there is a buildup to a modern day climax. But, it is set in a sort of medieval/ scientific age, as there is magic, but its use is primarily utilitarian, and is in accordance with actual laws of thermodynamics and energy, and its called sympathy. Really good, best book ive ever read.

4. Its so good, you can feel the way the main character develops, there is such a sense of wonder and action and cleverness to the wording that makes me fangasm

4. George R.R. Martin praised this series as "Fresh, original, and engrossing." coming from the author of a song of ice and fire, that's pretty good praise!

I don't know if you've read it, but The Infernal Devices and the Mortal Instrumemts are really great reads. The books are both written by Cassandra Clare.

16 Name: Inuki : 2015-08-18 12:42 ID:7RSw/Zpq [Del]

Option 1:
Title- Go Set A Watchman
Author- Harper Lee
Description- If you had read "To Kill a Mockingbird", then this is technically the sequel to it. If you liked that book and like really good literature, then I would recommend this. If you haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird, I think you should be fine, but I rather you read it first, since it will give off a nice feeling once you read this one.
Cool fact~ this book was written in the 1950's but just discovered the manuscript for it in 2014. How great is that?

Option 2:
Title- The Count of Monte Cristo
Author- Alexandre Dumas
Description- It is about a sailor named Edmond Dantes, and how he was betrayed by his friends and lover and sent to a prison called Chateau D'If to die. However he escapes and plots revenge against all of those who had framed him, betrayed him, and placed him there. So, the genre for this is Tragedy, Revenge, Romance, etc (all of those sweet genres put into one book)
Additional Comment- The original book is quite long, so if you do not want to read all of it, you can always find the shorter version; it is just as good (since I read it when I was twelve)

Option 3:
Title- Skulduggery Pleasant (the series)
Author- Derek Landy
Description- Stephanie Edgley is a twelve year old and when her uncle dies, everything turns into chaos. Strangers attempt to break in, or kill her and such, but she meets Skulduggery Pleasant, who introduces to a new world which she never she had been living in. They then go on an adventure to solve to death of her uncle and how she, herself, is involved with Pleasant's world.
The genre is fantasy/magic, crime, murder, and adventure.
It was the first series I fell in love with. It's a little more towards the Teen's interest area but it's great, no matter how hold you are. And if you do continue the series, each book gets better and better- you'll either feel happier and happier, or sadder and sadder. Nonetheless, IT's GREAT!

17 Name: Inuki : 2015-08-18 12:51 ID:7RSw/Zpq (Image: 1024x768 jpg, 231 kb) [Del]

src/1439920302913.jpg: 1024x768, 231 kb
I also recommend the Skulduggery Pleasant series.
Option 3:
Title- Skulduggery Pleasant
Author- Derek Landy
Description- Twelve year old, Stephanie Edgley's life turns into chaos after the death of her uncle. Strange people attempt to break in into her uncle's house, demanding for one of his unknown belongings. However, she is saved from a mysterious man who happens to be one of her uncle's old friends- Skulduggery Pleasant. Thus, the two go on an adventure to solve Stephanie's uncle's death, and all the while, Pleasant teaches her of a world she did not even realize she was living in.
The genre of this book is Fantasy/Magic, Crime, Action, and Adventure. There are several books within this series and if you do continue with it, each book gets better and better because of it's unexpected plot twists and lovable witty humor. The series is mostly directed to teens, but regardless of age, it is still highly recommended by many.
IT REALLY IS GREAT! You'll LOVE IT! :)

1) Espresso Love by Takastu

2) magical realism, distopian

3) In Tokyo, Japan, where identity, thoughts, memories and emotions decay, a strange clairvoyant and a literature student embark on a paranoiac escape against Kafkaesque system, oppression, mindless agents, civil unrest and reality itself, in a mind-blowing soul-searching journey for love, for what had been long lost and what it means to be human. Yet all that remains is a peculiar coffee shop order.

I am incredibly partial to Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks because it not only shaped my idea of what I want to do with my life, but also has proven an indispensable reference material. It truly is a fantastically comprehensive work on the mechanisms in the brain that produce hallucinations of all sorts, and how they do so.

Haruki Murakami, in my personal opinion is a pretty great author. His novels are all so fascinatingly surreal yet incredibly realistic. I do think that while majority of the books are translated to the best as possible effort - that it does occasionally conceal the true impact of his words. His works are mostly contemporary but always provide some sort of comforting honesty towards society (or in his case, Japanese society.) I would love if any of you had the time to look at some of his novels - Norwegian Wood, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World or Kafka on the shore.

1 Dune Frank Herbert
2. sci-fi, political, romanse, suspense, psychological
3. Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which noble houses, in control of individual planets, owe allegiance to the Padishah Emperor, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose noble family accepts the stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis.

As this planet is the only source of the "spice" melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is a coveted — and dangerous — undertaking.

The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the forces of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its "spice"

4. It's actually a saga. I felt in love this this book when I was 13 and still like to come back to it. It's a complicated story, but really gripping.

>>6 Personally like this book too. I like whole Disc World's books, but that one read several times.
