My idea is simple, I want to create a world! We are writers aren't we, I think it would be awesome if we could all work together and make one using the power of stories! It won't be easy and will take a long time but I think it would be an awesome thing to try.

So the idea is that we will write the kind of story that goes into depth for each and every character and their interactions with others. Kind of like the very story that created this site, Durarara! But I want us to make it even bigger! What if we created a town where every single person in it had their story and interactions? And why stop at that! But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves yet ;D.

Now to what it would involve. Now I'm not claiming to have everything figured out and will be heavily relying on others for this in many ways but that's the point of this! The idea is that we are all going to work together to create this! I'm not asking for people to follow me and help so that I can do this alone, I'm looking for partners to work alongside so that we can achieve this! We are the dollars! The dollars will be the ones to create this story of a world!

But back to what it will require...

Firstly, the biggest and most important part of this would be communication and contact between everyone helping out with this. For now I'll just leave my email at the bottom because I don't know if anyone would even want to help with this or not but eventually, in theory, we'll need something like a skype group or chatroom so that we can all communicate with everyone.

Secondly, it would involve a lot of designing. I guess we would need a map of the town and where the shops, houses, buildings etc would all be. We don't need pictures or art for this so it shouldn't be too bad but if we can get enough people for this then who knows, maybe it'll become a manga or something :D. But if anyone has any idea how we should go about doing this or what we could use to start this off then that would be awesome.

Thirdly, we are going to need to be organised and have designated things to do more or less. If we are going to have this many stories and characters that all fit together then we would need a basic plan of how we would go about this to start it off. Eventually, we will all read each others stories/see each others ideas and all give feedback so that everything fits together but starting it off is the hard part.

But the last two things we need are patience and numbers. The reason I'm putting them together is because this board isn't very active. I doubt many people will come right away or even see this so this plan isn't something I'm expecting to get easily started any time soon. This is a long term plan that I would like to even be the new mission of the literature thread!

As for other things, I guess we will just cross that bridge if we get there, but if I missed anything major for now then please let me know. ^^

I think all the writers should come up with their own characters. Then we could share character descriptions and see how the characters can interact in real life.

But yeah, this is still way too much in the early stages to start thinking about full commitment. The first step is getting to a point when we think that this idea is actually doable, or that we can at least start it ^^.

But that is a good start though, while we're waiting for more people to join and help. So what kind of story setting should it be?

Each one would have different mechanics so things like the time period and if it's a real world would play a large part in it. I suppose that if we're going to make a complete town/village/city etc it would have to be functioning. So making it in a game world like SAO might be easier since we don't have to worry too much about all the realistic aspects that normal life would need to function. But I don't think it's the best route to take though, it just doesn't feel right for what I pictured when thinking about this idea.

Since we are creating a world, it's not going to be somewhere real, like modern day Japan. We are going to create our own world which also means that it can function however we want. We could even create different customs and ways of life if we wanted but we would need to put a lot of thought into it to make it consistent. But the other option is that if we are planning on expanding it further than just a simple town then it could be like Kino's Journey in the sense that each "Country" is very unique and different to the last.

In my opinion it would probably be best to be in real life and probably should be in some version of modern day time like what we live in. In order to create that many characters and in a town that's functioning then it makes sense to go with what we know and what kind of stories we can create.

However, a kingdom never occurred to me to be honest. I'm starting to like the idea more and more now though. But creating a kingdom or in some kind of setting that is further back in time has it's ups and downs. I do like the idea of using things like kings and subjects and going deeper into people from those kinds of times that wouldn't usually be looked upon. However, Kingdoms and things like medieval times I picture more in stories involving travelling and focusing more on the world itself rather than a single town or village in it. But the most important thing is if we would be able to create characters and write stories for that kind of setting.

One thing I have to ask though is if there should be supernatural elements in it? Or even what genre it would be? You'd think slice of life, comedy maybe, romance but should there be elements of action, or horror or sci-fi? Or should we go for variety and make it the most interesting town that people have ever seen!

This seems really cool. I think we probably will need some sort of chat room to use if we want to be able to share each others ideas, but for now if more people try doing this we should at least all have our own characters in mind. The setting should be the second thing we think about because characters can always adapt to whatever we have in mind. I think the hard part will be intertwining the stories together, because I think it's really hard for some writers to mash up their stories with people who don't have the same writing aesthetic as them. I hope more people decide to do this, because if it's only the three of us it may not work out. Good luck!

If you guys want to skip some of the more tedious tidbits, I have a fantasy world you could make towns in. The basic lore is already written out with rough details regarding the cultures and climates of the different countries/continents. There's also a general map that you shouldn't have trouble plopping a dot down on.

Or if you want a challenge, I also have a dystopian city project (which we roleplayed in here before) that I've been fleshing out for a videogame and could use some help with.


And if you guys do decide to have it in real life, don't forget Google Maps :3 You can zoom right in on a town in satellite mode and already have a map done for you <3

This is interesting. I'd like to join. I think when it comes to setting and timeline, we shouldn't make it constant like modern or medieval. We should make it flexible. Since, were making a world, it should have a lot of space to do that. Make a country with different timelines. And we should just use the actual map of the world and just use that as a reference when making the city, countries, and village. For example, I'll use japan as my area and make my setting to futuristic, so all there are flying cars, AIs, and stuff. Sorry if I'm really vague on my idea. So basically use an actual country as an area of your work, change its name and setting.

This project sounds amazing! Making the storylines intertwine so that they fit into each other will be difficult so maybe we just need to start with a storyline for 1 character. That character (let's just call him/her A-kun for now) interacts with other characters in that storyline. The characters that A-kun speaks later get their own storylines and if the two storylines don't intertwine correctly, you can always edit the storyline of a A-kun or the other character. The other characters can meet characters that A-kun didn't meet in his storyline so you can write many storylines that way.
As for the genre. Personally i think it's the best choice that almost all genres are used. Just choose a couple of genres for a storyline instead of the whole story.
I think it will be much more fun for everyone like that because if you like writing or reading a specific kind of genre you can just write it (as long as it at least some effect on the main plot of the story). This is just my personal opinion and suggestion. I hope i helped a little bit with this.

Okay... I completely love this idea, and I'd definitely be interested in joining! I've written a few things before, but not really anything very long. What I have done writingwise is mostly worldbuilding/planning and roleplaying, but I think I could work with that.

Wow, a lot of people have decided to help :D. That's awesome! But yeah,the thing we need to do now is get organised and figure out a way of us all contacting each other and figure out how we're going to do this. It sounds simple enough in theory but there are a lot of details and things to sort out and organise.

So like I said the first thing we need to do is decide how we will go about doing this as far as communication goes. So please suggest if you have any ideas. I was thinking skype chatting maybe, or maybe if you know a good chat website then we could set up a room but we need a way to be able to discuss things and ask questions easily, so something when you can tell if others are online or not preferbly. These world building prompts might help you guys if you decide to go for a fantasy setting.

It makes you detail everything from maps and species all the way down to the languages, artwork, foods, folk lore, etc. You could assign different people to different parts to get it done a lot faster than a single person would :o

You'll probably need a map and the basic species first before you could collaborate properly tho.

I'm willing to create a character. I can't draw, so I'll just write down the details of my character like a folklore.



Name: Entom
Age: He doesn't remember
Race: Half Mountain-Ent, Half human
Setting:
He lives in his mountain, guarding his forest and hills. He does not leave the forest unless he has the reason to.

Though he looks human, he can change part of his body into wooden form, and as long as he stays within his mountain, he can regenerate forever. However if he leaves the mountain, he becomes nothing more than a mere human who is extremely weak to fire.

In his human form, he both ages and anti-ages. From sunrise to sunset, he grows from a teenager into an middle aged man. But at night, from dusk to dawn, his aging reverses and from a man he turns into a boy.

Because he is unaware of the customs, timelines, histories, cultures outside of his
mountain, he does not care if you are a good or bad person, as long as you show respect to the green and keep your manners. (Though he hates fire and axes.)

People who used to know him, who are now dead, visit him often to tell him tales of outside world and get his aid. Because he is an Entling, he can almost heal anything with his regenerative power and herbs.





How's this for a character. He doesn't move out of his mountain, so I think this guy could work well in this new world. (I already feel like playing the best kind of MMORPG there is.)

I guess you could say that I'm still looking for new people to help with this but I feel like you're taking the wrong approach to this. I'm not recruiting people for a job, I'm hoping to get to a point when everyone's on the same level so I'm not going to be a leader giving you orders. As for fantasy though, and that kind of scenario, my thoughts are simple; it wasn't my original thoughts or intentions for a story like that. If the real world is boring then we create our own. Fantasy world are already fantasy, those worlds can be amazing but why not make an interesting world that's more relateable? Can the world we live in really not be that interesting? Every one of you out there has your own story, everyone goes through their ups and downs, but this world never focuses on them does it? The point of a story like this is to go into detail about everyone's story, everyone's pain, things that could even happen in normal day life but people aren't aware of. But these are stories after all, so why not be creative and add extra things into it!

Here's a question to you people out their who would like to join, I know it's off topic but we are anime fans aren't we? What do you guys think about anime like Clannad and Kannon? Or even anime like Anohana, Welcome to the NHK, and even Serial Experiments Lain? And then there's even the very Durarara itself! I'm sure there's more I'm missing but look at the variety and the stories. Can we as writers create stories like that? Can we take the world that we live in and create amazing stories from it? These anime only focus on a few stories in their everyday scenarios. But we're aiming higher, we are going to create a world!

This project is too vague and unclear so I'm trying to bring more direction to it, and clarify my original goal. Keep in mind though that I'm not telling you how it's going to be, I'm telling you my opinion of how I see it. This is a discussion, we will all decide on what's happening, but that's my thoughts on it.

I think we all will have different visions of where this kind of story/world would go so I guess for now it's best to simply see how much our visions differ, and go from there. Could people please try and post more, even if it's just asking why nothing's happening. I may have started this thread and idea but I'm just one of you guys so I'm hoping for some help on this, even this early into it.

I think the best idea its make a big city. It will be more easy to have a localization of every character and even more easy to write a story in it than in a whole kingdom.
And talking about characters, it think everyone has to have a story, a personaity, and all this things. And maybe the best idea to make real and best interactions between characters will be a little roleplay or, at least, we will need to talk between us to have a real interaction and not a chaotic compilation of stories.

How about this? How about trying to make 1 to 5 characters each member here who participates, so we won't make it too confusing. Like you could make a family of 5, out of those characters. Or they could be a group of people who's willing to fight the demon lord. And also, if your sticking to just one character,it would make it flexible for them to interact with it. So I prefer people to make one,but there's like twins and stuff so I limit it to 5 characters each.

The thing is that this idea is cool and all but I can't really picture it starting properly and it didn't feel like we were making any progress apart from new people coming. I like things that knock on the 4th wall. Something that does make the character feel more real.

This idea is simply amazing, so much optimism in it as i read each reply. Although, where has this actually gone? It sounds more like an idea ( a great one ) than something to be put into action. But in the end that's how all great things are started off to be as, an idea. To see this to be put in action (and even participate ) by a community as such would be lovely.

Rather than focusing on characters first, let's start world building (as you guys said modern day like durarara), and also the KEY EVENTS that would happen in the story. Or like ARCS. It'd be easier to know which characters to make then.

ex in durarara:

Slasher arc - a lot of slashing is occurrences. Then we felsh out who get's stabbed, witnesses etc.

Hollywood Arc - *laugh* a russian and a masked murderer fights at the park ----> a violent guy hits them ------> russian guys is found by twins -----> masked muderer is found by an idol

So I looked at the document, I really like the first paragraph and the idea of a bird overseeing everything, I think it might help the story this way and be the connection between unrelated events.

What do people think of what M wrote? I feel that it's not exactly what I had in mind. I don't want this to just become one of those stories where one person writes a bit and then the next one continues it and then the next and so forth. I think that we need to write stories and characters before adding them to the story.

Which leads me to a question I have about this. If we were to have someone who's the organiser for this project then what we could do is each send stories to them and they will make them google docs so that everyone will be able to see them. The point of this is so that everyone can see others stories and ideas without knowing who did them so that we can decide what to use.

We each create puzzle pieces and show them to everyone. Everyone discusses and decides which pieces they like and fit. Then once they start connecting together we can figure out the shapes of more pieces to make and submit them for everyone to look at.

So it's not just going to be one super long story, it's going to each of our stories connecting together to build a world. A world doesn't just have one event and group of characters at a time, so to write a story it can't just be one document. Or at least that's how I see it, let me know if that didn't make sense becuase it probably makes more sense in my head.

But yeah, I think it's best for us to write stories that could fit into a world like this and start figuring out a way for everyone to see them.

This thread is quite long so I wasn't able to read all of it, but could someone please explain what we have so far? So with the document, it's really not what I had in mind. Maybe a better way of approaching this is to have a table of contents and then have people add in stories that are more or less stand alone but fit in the world so that people can fit them into other stories and build off of them.

I'll say it as clearly as I can: This is not a story where one person starts it off, the next writes a bit more and then the next a bit more etc... The aim isn't for multiple people to create a story, it's for multiple stories to create a world.

Think short stories, a finished version of this I was thinking would be a compilement of short stories that are all connected and take place in the same area. I apologise for being really vague and unclear with this but it's really not going where I feel it should.

Don't really know what to say to be honest...as per usual. Still here though if you have questions or anything ^^

As requested by toforeversigh, I made a table of contents. This way, you shouldn't be troubling your self continuing on others work. If you already have a story you made, you can just easily post it there and we'll find a way to connect them together.

I like the idea and posted a couple of intertwined stories, i am much better at the fiction good v evil and can make some very good villains so please if you have a good action character but no body to go against him i can lend a hand.
