So...im working on writing a book...(when i get the first few chapters done i may post them somewhere...tbd) but im having a mental block on how to describe a characters hair...its a minor detail...but man it bugs me that i cant describe it right...im trying to come up with an object that looks like dark brown mid-length hair for a guy..basically...complete this sentence: "His shaggy brown hair hung down like_______."

any help appreciated!!

I think before his hair, maybe you should describe if his tall or small, with that the readers can grasp what you really want. I'm just a beginner though so don't trust this words. :D I prefer you should read more books. P.S I want to read it. Will ya send me?

"Hung down" and "shaggy" don't exactly go together imagery wise. Hanging has the imagery of something cleanly draped straight down while "shaggy" is a hairstyle where there's a lot of messy layers (and usually asymmetrically parted bangs).

Do you have any reference pictures that can help us describe it better?

Sorry but >>3 is wrong (sorry) about "hung down" and "shaggy". In fact, you could word it like this. His shaggy brown hair hung down like a mop. Use imagery that reminds you of the hair. When you're writing imagine everything and play with the words. There's always revising. Once you're done with your rough draft read it over again until you're finally satisfied.
