I prefer Otaku because everytime i see someone using the word weaboo it's always something like "I hate weaboos they're so annoying, get a life." Otaku started as something negative in Japan but it's now something that people can say with pride because it just describes a passionate person, and they're passion can be anything although since it's a Japanese word it usually refers to Japanese things. I will proudly state i an an Otaku but don't ever call me a weaboo or we will have it out.

Although nowadays I don't hear about gang violence as much in the south side and east side.You shouldn't worry because if you stay in the less violent neighborhoods everything should be fine. By the way we still use "South side" and I live on the East Side. It's semi violent were I live but the colleges and downtown are near so voilence is kept at minimum.
