During a summer camp, 15 children, 8 males and 7 females, find a grotto by the sea. Deep within they discover working computers and some electronic equipment, and later the owner, a man called Kokopelli. Kokopelli claimed to be a programmer working on a brand new game, in which a large robot has to defend the Earth against alien invasions. He persuades the children to test the game and sign a contract. All but one of them sign, barely a moment later they mysteriously awaken on the shore believing what happened was just a dream.
Do. Not. Be. Fooled. This is NOT a happy story where the characters defeat monsters, and save the world. NOT. It's incredibly sad, emotional, and made me tear up. It one of those mangas where I really wanted to cry, but couldn't. And with sad music while reading it is torture. This manga may have some triggers. Also, be prepared to be ready to want to claw, and scream. I repeat. Do. Not. Be. Fooled. Be. Prepared.

By the way, the manga is a lot more sad than the anime. The anime left a lot of things out. And it changed the ending.

Okay. I've been trying to find people who have even heard of this manga, or even the anime which is of low quality, but no one knows it. Then again, I cannot talk about others, for I hadn't known it existed until about last year. And it's been around since 2007 if I'm correct. I recommend this. Read it, please. It'll most likely be worth your time, and if you don't want o read it, well.....I guess you could always try out the anime. My favorite characters were Waku, Ushiro, Moji, Daiichi, and Kanji. Just thinking about them is making me sad, but I'd have to say the saddest ones are Moji, and Daiichi. It's very sorrowful.

To zenithyore, from the anime section... My favorite characters have been Maki Ano, Daiichi Yamura, Aiko Tokosumi, and Yosuke Kirie. Theres no reason why really, those are just the ones I liked most. I also got really attached to Kana Ushiro and her time as a pilot, and I found it sad than most of the others because of her only being in 4th grade. I do NOT like dung beetle. He just gets on my nerves.

I finished it.. I hated the last 2 issues. I hated them so much that I'm seriously just pretending that it ended at 64, that ushiro was the last pilot, and that once ushiros battle was over dung beetle appeared with zearth on a different earth so the story could "continue" and all that. Besides that, thought, I loved it and it is definitely my favorite manga. I really liked ushiro at the end. It makes me sad when I think about the whole thing. I guess thats all I really have to say about it.. I hated the last two issues, I started to like ushiro at the end, and its probably my favorite manga.

Oh, and I love the header image. Especially when i cover dung beetle with my thumb. I think its perfect.

No matter what though at the time I didn't know why I liked him so much. His last fight was awesome, yet depressing. All in all, it was terrible on the emotions, but a great story. I like stories with sad endings. They're great.

Yes, but I still didnt like it. There werent any specific reasons honestly. I just didnt think it was a very good ending.
