I started trying to read it a little while ago, and I got as far as the end of the gun devil arc before stopping. This is going to be a rather long explanation, so bear with me. Spoilers if you haven't read it.

I absolutely hate chainsaw man as a series. Amongst the many things that I think is wrong with it, Denji sticks out to me like a sore thumb. The number one reason for why people hate Denji seems to be because of his horniness, and that's also why I hate him, but not in the same way as most. People who criticize Denji in this way fail to elaborate exactly why it makes his character unlikable, so most of Denji's defenders often assume that those who do criticize him simply can't understand the emotional depth and complexity that comes with his character. Denji is someone who is deeply traumatized, and possesses an immense need for intimacy due to the lack thereof during his childhood. This absence of love and normal human decency lead to his idea of such things being reduced to it's base form: pure instincts and hormones. Now I will say, for a 16 year old boy, that is completely normal. Boys going through adolescence often desire to participate in such things. In Denji's case, however, that desire is one of his only desires, which again, makes sense due to his circumstances. What people fail to realize is that something can both make sense and still be a bad thing. Denji represents a real phenomenon of sexual obsession in certain men, an obsession that only worsens with time. Denji is a creep. Creeps like him, in real life, are hated, for good reason. They are never given a closer look or examination, they are never given the excuse of how they were raised or what made them the way that they are. This is because none of those things matter. The past is not an excuse to be used for the facts of the present. You are what you are, and no amount of tragic backstory can excuse it. When murderers stand trial, and are declared legally insane, they are not simply released back into the street. It's not their fault that they ended up a murderer, but they did in fact murder someone. Those actions still have to be accounted for regardless of reason.
