Hey, this guy was in a movie with his name on it recently huh? So if you're like me and wondered what's gonna happen to him later when the movie ended, here's your thread.

James Buchanan Barnes aka Bucky was Captain America's best buddy during WWII. In the movies they're roughly the same age, but in the comics Bucky is a few years younger and was basically a teen in the war. Also they didn't meet until after Steve became Cap.

They fought together for a number of years until the day when they both "died" . Steve Rogers was frozen in ice, only to be discovered years later and brought back to life. Bucky went through something a bit different. He was discovered by Russians shortly after his death, revived, brainwashed and trained to be one of their secret weapons during the Cold War, the assassin known only as the Winter Soldier.

Bucky's modern day adventures start in 2005 in Captain America Vol.5 written by Ed Brubaker, where he makes his first appearance as the Winter Soldier. The arc named after him lasts from issue #1 until #14, but his story continues throughout the book after that. After issue #25 SPOILER but not really, Captain America is dead because of the superhero Civil War, and after a while Bucky takes up the mantle of Cap.

As Captain America, Bucky becomes a member of the New Avengers, and remains on the team even after (surprise) Steve Rogers' return.

After Fear Itself (2012) he gives up on the Captain America identity and goes back to working as a secret agent together with Black Widow in his own series called Winter Soldier!

He also probably makes appearances in a lot of other stuff that I haven't read/am not familiar with. You might also notice that I didn't mention any Silver/Golden age titles because I'm not familiar with those either.

Comic downloads are rather easy to find, for example if you google [character name] + masterpost. This is one for most of the things I mentioned.

Bucky is mostly miserable a lot and keeps making bad decisions, he's pretty fun to read about.

Another thing worth reading that I haven't mentioned is Captain America and Bucky #620-624. It's Bucky narrating his life story and years in the war with Cap and the art by Chris Samnee is really nice.

Somehow in the past month or so this guy has wormed himself into my heart and become pretty much one of my favorite characters ever.

There's a slim chance anybody's gonna take me up on this, but if you've seen the second Cap movie I think it's super easy to jump in at the beginning of Vol 5. But if you don't feel like making a commitment, Captain America and Bucky is a 5 issue long origin retelling thing and is more than worth it. I mean look at it :o

Also he once wrestles a bear shirtless in Siberia, why would you want to miss out on that?
