"Koe no Katachi (聲の形 The Shape of Voice?) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima.

The story revolves around Shōko Nishimiya, a middle school student who has impaired hearing. She transfers into a new school, where she is bullied by her classmates. Ishida Shouya, one of the bullies, goes to the point that she transfers to another school. As a result, he is ostracized and bullied himself, with no friends to speak of and no plans for the future. Years later, he sets himself on a path to redemption."

This story is just too darn cute, and it took me completely by surprise at how well-done the drama and romance centered around a deaf girl was written. Overall, it's a great series that seriously needs more attention, which is why I'm posting a thread about it.

Ishida was just being a kid when he was little. He was mean to her in elementary school. So what? He felt bad about it after she left, but he wouldn't have dwelled on it if they let him be. Everyone else has issues with it because *they never faced their retribution*. They put all the blame on him, so he had to man up and grow up, but they didn't get that chance. They are still so caught up in what they did and are still shoving that guilt deep inside them. They're only hanging out with Nishimiya because they want her to accept them, to be nice to them to try to dissolve that guilt, even though they're still being just as mean to her and Ishida without noticing

It's so realistic but so not fair ;-;

The last chapter made me so happy, though. They all need a damn reality check! Even if it reopens wounds for Ishida and Nishimiya, I hope they finally understand that they did wrong.

If this series isn't getting recognition, then it really does need some. QQ Just the first 4 chapters thoroughly violated my kokoro.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. It just...didn't seem conclusive to me?

Oima-sensei did a really good job with the character development over the course of the manga, and each chapter was really interesting to read. But there's that Ishida and Nishimiya pair plotline that was left a little up in the air for the end. I mean, were they together? Or did Ishida not confess yet?

I know that this is technically a shonen, but.... I was just hoping that this would be resolved somehow. And ending with them walking through a door was a little cliche, though, for this manga, which is big on symbols, I'll let it slide.

Overall, it was a great read and it's really beautiful. I hope the team handling the anime puts the same amount of care and delivery it deserves.
