Well let's start a decent thread with this.....
Deemed one of the most influential manga of the early 200's, Death Note is a dark, mature shonen that was surprisingly serialized in WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP.

The story follows a honors student, Light Yagami, who one day finds a mysterious black notebook titled the DEATH NOTE on the ground. A young man who wishes for peace and the extermination of evil, he soon figures out the rules of the Death Note. by writing a name in the pages of the notebook, the bearer of that name dies. Realizing the potential of his power, Light decides to create a utopian world where it is under his guidance. The shinigami, Ryu, who dropped the notebook on the ground to kill time observes the following destruction in amusement.

A revolutionary manga by Ohba and Obata, (creators of bakuman), Death Note is a work that has intricate story lines and fantastic art. Detailed backgrounds and precise character designs, Death Note is a manga worth reading to any would-be fan. Although the plot may have some shaky foundations, it is still a high quality work. And everyone will love the touching story of a boy and his god-complex

I thought what Light was doing was a good thing until he went crazy

>>2 IN the manga, they explicitly state that once you use the death note even once, you've done evil and will die a terrible death

I like the one with two notebooks. And also a secret watch too.

This manga was crazy. I almost couldn't believe the end. It was not disappointing. I'm glad it was my first manga

Hands down my favourite anime. Watched it 4 times already. Excellent music, story, characters, setting and atmosphere. It's my definition of perfect.
People compared it to Code Geass a lot, and I understand where they are coming from. Personally I preferred Lelouch from Code Geass over Light Yagami but it's still my favourite anime.

Sorry for that spontaneous outburst of love but I just can't express my feelings well enough when I talk about this anime.

Best. Anime. EVER! This is what got me into anime and manga, and a mutual love of Death Note is what got my sister and I to become friends. Five star anime right here.

Personally, I believe what Light was doing was evil because:
1. He went crazy.
2. He killed FBI agents and others who were coming after him, even though they had done no wrong and were just doing their jobs. A true savior-of-justice wouldn't kill people just because they have different beliefs.
3. He killed petty theives and first-time criminals. No forgiveness there. Gods are supposed to be forgiving. Light would have killed Jean val Jean for stealing a loaf of bread to save his sister's son.
4. What if there really was a God up there? Light would just be screwing with His plans.
5. He's an imperfect human just like the rest of us, no matter how much his ego disagrees. This is why dictatorships don't work, because one imperfect person should not be given absolute power. That's what Light wanted--a dictatorship.
5. Capital punishment is always wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right; murdering murderers is not just. Throw criminals in jail--they can't do much harm there and it would be a worse punishment anyway then granting them a quick and painless death.

Whew sorry that was long lol

this was the second anime/manga i found and i loved it. its has the basic story line plot twists etc etc but the idea of lights thoughts with the DN was to create a world where there is no crime or wrong doing which is against human nature and the thing it paticuarly failed at if he did it is it would fall just like Communism and Comunist Russia the problem with Communism is you cant get someone that cant be corrupted by the power it wields. Even the most innocent and pure person with the strongest sense of justice can be corrupted for the right price.

inserted image below shows the two sides of light as he progresses through the series. it also shows how on one side he doesn't want to manipulate but he does and ends up using his father. He feels the guilt but ignores it in the pursuit of 'the perfect world' which is something that can never be done.

SPOILERS
Definitely one of my favorite animes.
It was so hard to pick a side, since there were just so many... When you think about it, you had L vs Light, Near vs Mello, Near vs. Light, Light vs Rem, etc...
I agreed with Light at first. I'm a huge supporter of the death penalty. But when he started killing anyone who opposed him, or anyone that did so much as steal a purse, that's when it went too far. He was found out because of his immaturity, and that is very disappointing.
L, meanwhile, knew Light was Kira all along. I really like that he knew, even when he presented with counter evidence, he just knew. He isn't your typical hero, he had his strengths and flaws, and while he was very confident he had a REASON to be.
All Light had were good grades.
Near was one of my favorites as far as his little obsession. Same with L. I myself am a very childish person and take poor care of myself. I obsess over Transformers and collect the toys.
I liked how I could relate to both of these characters in that sense.
Honestly, the only thing I hated about this anime was the unnecessary part where they showed those *cough* naughty books Light was reading, and Misa. Just Misa as a character was awful. They could have given her any other personality, but no. She had to be an idiot.
Over all, awesome anime!

Well you have to have at least one idiot in a series.

I liked Matsuda and Near... They just caught my attention. <3

I like Mello and his 'unconventional' methods a lot.
I had also nothing against Light's goals in the first episodes, but at the point when he said he want to kill lazy people with no work too it was to much for me. Not everyone is an genius like him.

I really dislike how, in the anime at least, Light lost half his brain where his intelligence was supposed to be stored. I haven't finished reading the manga, but will get to it soon.
