Now, when you look up 'Journey into Mystery' what's going to come up is that it's a series that started publishing in the 1950s and it's where the character of Thor first appeared. It has since changed its name from 'Thor' to 'Journey into Mystery' and back a couple of times. It's complicated comic stuff.

But this thread is specifically for the new run of the series that started in 2011 with issue #622.

(It may be hard to conceive starting to read something from such a far along point, but reading comics is not like reading manga. I think it stands on its own rather well, if you have a certain amount of background on the characters and some major events. Wikipedia or whatnot can help with that.)

Right then. The current Journey into Mystery follows the various adventures of Loki, norse God of Mischief, brought back as a child after devastating events left the city of Asgard in ruins and him dead.

If you know anything about Loki, you'd know he was the villain, always scheming something against his brother and home realm. But as a child Loki doesn't remember most of his former life and claims to want to act in favor of Asgard not against it. But is he to be trusted? He is the God of Lies after all. Most of his fellow asgardians don't and treat him with animosity, the only one showing him kindness being his brother Thor, the one who brought him back. The stake here is whether this time Loki will follow through with this new path or end up going back to his old self.

Obviously the first people this series would appeal to are those interested in the character of Loki. But even if you're not going into it for him, it's a really great fantasy series. It's well-written, has a nice sense of humor and pretty amazing art. Honestly, since I started dabbling in comics (mostly Thor related things), this has become my favorite. Highly recommended.

I just love it O_o do you happen to know how it's past issues are divided? as in... this story started with 622, but if I wanted to go back a lil, where should I start? >.<

!!! Someone actually took me up on this. Wooo!

>>5 Well, the point where Loki is revived at is issue 617 of Thor. Before that you have Loki as an adult, and Thor as the protagonist, him being the hero and all.

Basically where I started reading was from 2007 onwards, because I heard the writer was good. I started with Thor V3 that resumes the story after a few year's break. This time it's after Ragnarok, which is basically the end of days in norse mythology. It's a good starting point. It has 12 issues and then goes back to original numbering with Thor #600 and so on.

And that's pretty much all I'm familiar with, though I'm planning on going further back at some point. Oh yeah, there's also The Mighty Thor which is Thor's series at the moment and runs in parallel with JiM.

>>13 Well it wasn't the real Thor, so it wasn't so bad I guess.

Oh yeah, since it's part of Siege I suggest you read the separate issues of Siege too (there's 4 of them), to get the big picture better. And maybe Siege:Loki for a bit of a behind the scenes look:P

18 Name: Kon : 2012-07-12 18:25 ID:C1FLKQ7r [Del]

Awwr >< well, they'll find some way of reviving it in a few months to a year

19 Name: bang-bang : 2012-07-12 18:37 ID:EJ59tfLM [Del]

>>18 Well the story will probably go on in some shape or form. Just not with the same writer and probably not under the same name.

But I'm just really worried for kid Loki's fate, I got really attached to him.

>>19 lol, I've branched out in a few comics surrounding the incident... Avengers - Initiative, Dark Avengers, Dark Wolverine, Siege, Thunderbolts, every now and then... it's a slower pace to get up to date, but I'm loving all of the diff view points!

21 Name: bang-bang : 2012-07-13 05:52 ID:EJ59tfLM [Del]

>>20 Yeah...I'm kinda slow on the branching out front.

>>21 I wonder tho, what project might the main artist take on next? any news?

23 Name: bang-bang : 2012-07-15 05:07 ID:EJ59tfLM [Del]

>>22 The main artist for Journey into Mystery or..? I don't really have a clue, but Marvel aren't saying much anyway about what happens with their relaunch or re-i-don't-really-know-what-it-is-exactly this fall.

I just started reading this! Love the artwork!
I friend's recommended me 'Fear Itself', the big collection of comics (I think), is that worth a look?

>>24 I thought it was pretty good, yeah:> But I didn't read many of the tie-ins and Fear Itself related things from different series, I just kept up with the main event and the part from JiM.

"A comedy in thirty parts
(or a tragedy in thirty-one)"

Journey Into Mystery #645 (final issue). The cover is too nice a parallel not to post, despite maybe being a bit revealing.

This comic was a really really worth while ride from beginning to end and I'm really glad I got started it. It's been a 'journey' with great characters, great BFFs and brothers, a great many tricks...and ultimately great loss. But the story goes on of course, with different players.

JiM continues with a new crew and will have Lady Sif as its protagonist. And if anyone is interested, Kieron Gillen, the pen behind kid Loki&co, will be writing Young Avengers starting January.

Aaand that's it. I still recommend this to everyone.
