My first Manhwa everybody~ aren't you proud?
The new English teacher, Chun-Woo, is not your ordinary teacher. Shioon, a victim of constant bullying, unexpectedly witnesses Chun-Woo's fighting power, and begs him to make him his disciple. Chun-Woo claims he can teach Shioon only if he is truly determined, and Shioon must jump off a bridge into a deep river in order to prove it!
It turns out, however, that Chun-Woo and his powers are more than meets the eye. Shioon makes a grand entrance into the hidden world of martial arts, and he is about to be taught by the best there is!

Oh boy, where to start... How about the beginning? Don't let this get ya down, but the entire prologue is totally a HUGE rip off of Great Teacher Onizuka(GTO). Like, omg, if you don't catch it you must be a completely dense idiot. But moving on, it eventually moves past the whole 'kid getting bullied>suicide>teacher saves him>kid likes teacher' and turns into one of the most badass martial arts manga I have read. I love that they made the the MC, Shioon, such a badass right off the bat, like to the point that he didn't even know how much of a badass he instantly became. Well this manga finished up at about 72 chapters, leaving a massive cliffhanger, which would have pissed me off a lot, but the sequel 'The Breaker: New Waves' is currently at about chapter 53. Its pretty great so far, but it hasn't progressed in the story that much, the art style seems to have changed, and all it really did was add new love interests (don't get me wrong, I love the way the artist draws the ladies~). However, I'm thoroughly enjoying reading this and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes martial arts manga.

I commented on the last one too, but yeah, this is basically one of the best manga/manhwa I've read.

It's kind of a shame it isn't a stand alone story, because with New Waves it just sort of looses steam. It's still good, but it's just brought down a bit by the fact that it's sooo slow. I think I'm about 10 chapters or so behind, but 40 chapters is more than half of the original series' run and it definitely doesn't have as many things happen in that amount of time.

But The Breaker wasn't really fast paced either so I'm still hoping New Waves will reach an awesome climax when the time comes. I'm still enjoying it and should really catch up. The last chapter I read was around the time Chunwoo finally made an appearance, which can only mean good things.

And I have to gush about the art. So good, so clean, so nice to look at. I don't really have a list of favorite manga artists thought out, but if I did the guy who draws this would definitely be somewhere pretty close to the top.

Also, I just read ch. 54... Ch. 53's ending was worse, but this one is setting Shioon up to wreck shit next chapter so I'm equally frustrated.

Caught up with this entire series (ch55 of New Wave) in one day.

I am highly disappointed by Shioon's advancements. Everyone seems quite amazed by him, but objectively speaking - He sucks. He gained an "absurd amount of Ki" from a special medicine, and mixed with the Black Heaven And Earth skill, was apparently some kind of unstoppable determinator capable of throwing around high level techniques for the lulz.

...And after the first manwha was over, he was had managed a decisive on-screen victory against... Chang Ho. The school bully.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Then New Waves picks up, and he even lost that shit for almost 30+ chapters. Yes, the school bully got a more effective power up than he did. Off screen.

He has spent the majority of New Waves trying to get by on being The Determinator, he's "won" two or three matches on merit of "I managed to tank everything you had then hit you once. Respect me, while I pass out!"

And yet everyone is still "Holy shit, this kid." "Holy shit, this kid's teacher." "Holy shit, this kid's Ki capacity.", "Holy shit, this kid's ability to learn techniques."

Holy shit he's still consistently having his ass handed to him by every character he runs into.

Powering up steadily is one thing, but when all your victories are off-screen or on, quite literally, one or two faceless mooks, there's something wrong.

Then he goes off and tries to learn how to hadouken people with his mind, coupled his determinator skills, and those magic pills of badassery, and he... Wait, what is this? Maybe I'm miss seeing this - Let me look again.

No, he went and go his ass handed to him by a little gothic lolita bitch. He didn't win, he shoulder checked her and walked off as she fixed her make up.

Then he legitimately gets pissed over Jinie... And proceeds to get his ass kicked. Then he gets his second wind! Badass is about to happen!

Then he gets his ass kicked again.

If Shioon doesn't get a meaningful on screen victory here soon, he seems like he'd be better off calling up Sosul from where-ever the hell she is and saying "hey, so, I'm ready to be a house-husband."

Or...Tha Chunmoonwo kid. He has an unnaturally homoerotic fixation on Shioon due to his determinator status. Maybe it's his stamina, I don't know - Go get him. At least that guy could kick ass when needed.

Anyway, I never thought of it that way... I always assumed they were just building him up to all of a sudden be a super badass, but I never noticed that the only real on screen fight he won was against that derpass bully...twice. They're taking too long with his development and it is beginning to piss me off... But hey, it's still badass... I'm enjoying it, it's just they pulled that 'too bad start over' shit before he even became an unstoppable monster. Which makes me sad... They should have had him go on an unstoppable bloody rampage defeating everyone around him, THEN, do that mess.

It's because they did that, that like I said earlier, it hasn't advanced much in the story line, which is disappointing.... It's a good thing I enjoyed everything else about this manhwa... Damn Shioon really disappoints me now that you've brought everything to light for me... I kinda just followed all the other characters and how they were saying how amazing he is. I guess I just believed all of them lol... Oh well... I ranted... I feel better. Time to wait for the next chapter... :|

I'm pretty glad I've never read GTO, so I don't have to worry about it. The only negative thing is that the names are harder for me to remember.

Shioon's best skill is getting his ass kicked and ending up in the hospital. I never really thought of tallying how many of these ass-kickings ended in his favor or not.

You have to admit he's awesome at loosing though. Even if he does it never feels like it. Maybe that's why some of us don't actually notice the fact that his victories are basically nonexistent. The fact that he's a fearless bitch like every time, even if he gets his ass handed to him, still gets me pumped up about him.

The Breaker was, as a whole, awesome, but it still had some flaws. These flaws just got exacerbated in New Waves. Or maybe everything that's wrong is easier to see now with the pace of the series slowed down to a crawl.

It's just that things happen but they don't push anything forward at all. I like most of the characters and I like seeing them do whatever it is they do, but seriously the big picture hasn't changed since the beginning. I know there's a lot of things that could happen with Shioon getting his superpowers back and bringing Chunwoo back into the picture and whatever else, but why isn't it happening NOW.

Yeah, good points. It's probably because I don't really hold power levels in such high regard that I can still kind of like Shiwoon and not be so bothered by his losses. It's the slow pace that kills it.
