Lets see... I've hit a wall, and can't find anything else worth getting into, and the new series that seem promising are, well, new, so they haven't hit the double digits mark yet. Only thing is, I don't have any straightforward criteria - okay, what's the first "non-mainstream" manga of any genre, of any demographic, that involves an original plot or interesting development of characters, a mastered, unique art style, some humor, and does not, or at least minimizes fanservice, is not a shounen battle manga nor a romantic comedy a-la-AhMyGoddess, nor a tragic romance story, nor a shoddy cliche involving vampires, ninjas or any of the usual suspects. Is that too much to ask for?

umm, well ones I like that aren't really popular, but they have quite a few chapters out are Pixie Pop, Iinchou...(iforgot) , Summer Wars, Pick of the litter (discontinued?), Alice of Deadlines (NOTWHATYOUTHINK), Eternal Alice Rondo, Once upon a Gashma, and Cy-Believers.. I haven't seen people really talk about those on the net, but I really like them. ><|

For those who like a dark genre, Deadman Wonderland.
The ones I'm currently reading are: Until Death Do Us Part (action), Dengeki Daisy (Romance, action), Claymore (action, adventure), Gakuen Alice (school life, adventure, romance), God of High School (action, adventure), Noblesse (action, adventure), Orange Marmalade (Supernatural, romance).

I also liked the mangas Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, D. Gray Man, Ao No Exorcist, Hunter x Hunter, and Detective Conan better than the anime.

Soul Eater, it has some horror yet overall comedy.

Kuroshitsuji, aka Black Butler, its comedy and mystery, following a young man with a demon butler through mysterious crimes.

Bleach, its got paranormal with some comedy.

One Piece, comedy... its funny.

Other than those i would also suggest Naruto but i don;'t know what to really recommend.

Not sure if any of you guys are into ecchi-horror manga, but I found a really good one called Corpse Party; it's based on the videogames by the same name. I highly reccomend it. It's extremely gory, and the theme is horror/psychological. Basically, kids get locked in a cursed school full of demons. The story varies between chapters/series as the story follows different characters.

There are several different manga adaptions for Corpse Party, all of which can be found on [mangafox.me].

Oresama Teacher
The main character, Kurosaki Mafuyu, was the Banchou (delinquent leader) of her school before she was finally expelled. Her mother forced her to go to another school. Her 'killer intent' attracted a normally dense delinquent boy, Hayasaka. She frequently saves him when he gets into fights he can't handle. After finding out that her homeroom teacher, Saeki Takaomi, is her neighbor who first taught her to fight, the story takes a dramatic turn. A new club called the Disciplinary Club is created amongst them, and their job is to take down all the top delinquents in the school. Afraid of being expelled for fighting, Mafuyu only fights wearing a bunny mask or by dressing up as her "boy" self, Nanao, which takes over position as banchou. The story basically continues on to follow the trio's misadventures, which can range from gut-wrenchingly humorous to down right nail-bitingly disastrous.

Code: Breaker
Sakura Sakurada was on the train to school one day when she looked over and saw a boy killing people with blue flames. After a short hunt and being basically labeled crazy for insisting that what she saw was true, the boy ends up as a transfer student at her school. She makes it her goal to self-righteously teach him the wonders of life and get him to stop killing, not caring about his situation. But what will she do when she finds out that killing is what he is made for? The story unfolds as Sakura finds out about Code: Breakers, their purpose, their powers, and her own powers, as well. Lost memories, forgotten connections, and close friendships bring everyone together in this ongoing, must-read manga series. The art of this series is great, and although its plot twists are a bit predictable, the story is still very enjoyable.

Fairy Tail
Lucy Heartfilia, the blonde, big-breasted heir to the Heartfilia family, has always dreamed of joining the infamous magician's guild Fairy Tail. She goes out on a hunt to find Salamander, the strongest fire mage of the guild, only to get caught up in a con's scheme. After being saved by the real Salamander, Natsu, she joins Fairy Tail and eventually becomes a powerful addition, for she's the only celestial key wielder in the guild. Along with the ice mage Gray and the strong Erza, she and Natsu form one of the strongest magical unions of not only Fairy Tail, but the world. The manga is long and follows their adventures, which often have to do with searching for dragons or other dragon slayers (and getting money to pay for Lucy's obnoxious rent /shot). Dragon slayers are children who were raised by dragons and were given their power. However, all the dragons disappeared on the same day. Fairy Tail seems to attract all the original dragon slayers, leading to many strange commotions.

The story is very much so based on the strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie. There is a lot of character development and some unexpected twists, as well as quite a bit of fanservice. (The fanservice isn't as overdone as other series, but it is very much so prevolent.)

+Anima
Many children were given animal qualities during an underground experiment. Often having their powers and appearances exploited, they went into either hiding or inprisonment. The story follows the situation of a boy who is mixed with what seems to be a raven or crow, therefore given the ability to fly. He, along with a "mermaid" who he rescues from a freak show, head out on a trip to find other Anima, as well as to discover their past and the purpose of their existence. It goes back and forth between light hearted and dramatic, and the art is a bit interesting. The series is completed, and although I haven't read much of it yet, I do reccomend it.

1/2 Prince
The main character (whose name I can never remember since Chinese names bother me) gets the first copy of a new virtual reality video game, prepared to show up her twin brother in-game. She is given a chance to swap her in-game gender, which is a rare opportunity, and takes it. The woman who helped her make a new avatar over did it, making her the most beautiful male character there was in-game, naming "him" Prince. Prince quickly becomes the object of both girls and boys, and with "his" new comrads' help, he becomes a strong, active member (and the poster boy) of the game. However, she has to keep quiet about her real identity since it's against the rules to change a gender, which she finds out a little too late. The story is very humorous with quite a bit of romance both in and out of the game. The art is very good, and the characters are absolutely hilarious. All the main characters have very in-depth personalities, and there is a lot of character growth. The series is on-going.

Tenkyuugi - Sephirahnatus
Nanao has finally gotten to realize his dream of coming to the infamous mage school, the Seventh Eastern Magic Institute. There, he reunites with old friend, Kisa, and discovers a new friend, the shy Nanten. Most shockingly, though, is when his power is revealed. Among the 12 powers (which are sealed into "Cards" that are designated at the beginning of freshman enrollment) Ein Sof is the most rare. However, not only is Nanao aware of this, but he already knows a great deal of magic and can summon the card on his own. He isn't the brightest student when it comes to class, but his power and engenuity with everything he does makes him a strong mage.

Unfortunately, there are darker parts of his past that he's not ready to reveal to his newfound friends, and his powers are attracting people who are out of their control. After the main trio finds a beautiful relic of the forgotten era of the greatest user of Ein Sof, everything begins to spiral out of control. Manipulation, politics, magic, plot twists... what more could this upcoming manga need? This manga is ongoing and is released slowly, but it is definitely worth the wait.

The story starts out following the antics of Summer Group B, which is actually a test group of anti-social people. The rest of the groups were made of skilled, intelligent, healthy, beautiful people. However, Summer Group B was made of people who were awkward and useless to society. It was really more of a, "just-in-case," measure. If you send all the same type of people and it turns out that those type of people aren't compatible with the environment, everyone would die and humanity wouldn't have a chance to repopulate.

The manga is a little confusing, but it's very interesting. There is a lot of emotion and drama. I had listened to 'Harro, Hawayu' on loop as I read through the diary arc (you'll know when you get there; it's a diary of what happened just before the meteor hit). Now, every time I hear that song, I get goosebumps. The whole story is very tragic, to be honest, but they pull of the tragedy in a very realistic manner.

Amakusa 1637 - gender bender, shoujo, historical:
A group of friends during their Senior Trip upon the cruise ship Victoria, suddenly get pulled back in time and separated. The main character, Hayumi Natsuki, arrives in the year 1636. In Japanese history, Christian rebels revolted in 1637, led by a young man known as Amakusa Shirou, resulting in thousands of casualties. Kaze no Sylphid - shounen, sports:
Sylphid is a horse born on a small horse ranch. Hayao the young boy who loves horses is determined to see Sylphid grow up healthy and become a top racer like his mother once was. However, the odds are stacked against the orphaned foal and the young boy.

Piano no Mori - seinen, drama:
A tranquil tale about two boys from very different upbringings. On one hand you have Kai, born as the son of a prostitute, who is been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. And on the other you have Syuhei, practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

Jesus- seinen, action, drama:
Jesus is about a high profile assassin who plans to fake his own death, laying low from all the mafia's hitman and the FBI that is after him. He plans to live out the rest of his life by using the money he got from the drug smuggling he stole from the mafia gangs-one of the reason he got chased. Somehow, his plan fails and he couldn't get those drugs his old time friend hid for him because it somehow got concealed in a school's wall, with a super strength blackboard on top of it. Yuu is a high school kid who doesn't really fit anywhere. To find a place he can belong, be accepted, he will do anything. However one thing leads to another and he is forced to fight to keep his place, his holyland.

Bakuman - romance, shounen, comedy:
It's not easy to become and live as a mangaka, as Mashiro Moritaka knows from his late uncle. At 9th grade, while trying to keep up with reality, school and then a normal job, he left his notebook with a sketch of Azuki Miho, a girl he likes. Heyo I'm looking for something to read and for once I'm actually asking for recs.

I'd like something completed (and completely scanlated of course) of short-ish/medium length. The plot can be so-so, but I want something with nice and interesting characters. Bonus points if it's likely to make me cry. More bonus points for very pretty art. Genre can be almost anything to be honest. So yeah, let's see if this works out.

Hmmm I haven't read a lot of comedy manga, but I think Yankee-kun to Megane-chan is very good. It's about high school kids and delinquents, there's a bit of romance, but it's in the background for the most part. It's pretty long though (about 200 chapters) and still has a few chapters that aren't scanlated yet.

Action/comedy makes me instantly think of Gintama, but it's really long and not completed so probably not what you're looking for.

Tower of God is good - its a korean webcomic and is great if you are looking for something a little unusual. It is set in a tower where participants go through multiple trails to reach the top floor where any wish can be granted.

I've been reading DICE manhwa but it's too large and too laggy and loads so slow that I decided not to continue reading it. Right now I like stories like "Darwin's Game" and "Blackout"... stories wherein characters need to fight in a battle/game and where their life is in the line... Tell me if you can refer something...

Read Millennium Snow, its a vampire story but it's different READ it. It's by one of my favorite manga writers, Bisco Hatori

I personally like Oresama Teacher. It has some bad-ass fighting, a strong female character,many lovable male characters and a really nice art style.A few problems with this manga is that it takes a long time to update(because of its popularity)and there is little romance going on.However,it is extremely humorous and the characters are cute.Did I mention this manga is a shoujo?

It all began as a fighting tournament to seek out for the best fighter among all high school students in Korea. Mori Jin, a Taekwondo specialist and a high school student, Mira Yu And Daewi Han. The three end up going from strangers to Friends to indeed a tough team. Like any action Comic, You get to watch the characters grow stronger along an exciting story.Comedy is golden.

The art is flat out perfect, Which means excellently drawn fight scenes. The development of the story and characters is god-like. There is no such thing as disliking someone in this blessed masterpiece. It has this tasty blend of Fantasy, Comedy, Action and at times twisted historical events and stories. This undoubtedly one of the best Manhwa you will have ever read. (Also Daewi is Bae)

Minamoto-kun has a face pretty enough to make people think he's a girl. Because of his face, he was bullied by the girls in middle school who were jealous of his face. He developed a fear of women due to the trauma and he ended up attending a high school for boys. Just as he enters college and makes a promise to himself to overcome the trauma of his past, his father remarries and asks him to move out of the house. His father arranges him to live with his aunt (Minamoto-kun's father's younger sister) for the time being. She is an extremely beautiful woman who is also a non-tenured professor at his college. When he arrives at her apartment, she shows him her breasts and tells him that he will be her "guinea pig" in her reverse Hikari Genji project.

NSFW at all if you know what I mean but it just about fits under the ecchi category. It's very easy to fap to if you're a loser who can't access porn sites.

Following on from >>145, if you liked Kimi ni Todoke, I recommend you read 'Ao Haru Ride' which, in English, means blue spring ride. It's one of my favourite shoujo mangas.

All the summaries online are hella long. Okay, so the main guy has had to leave the protagonist without confessing his feelings beforehand to move back to his home town because so much heavy shit is going in with his family. After a few years, he moves back to where the protagonist lives but he's a different person and no longer likes her. Some parts are heavy in drama but the romance is top notch. You've probably read it though because this shit is good.

Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish)

Summary: Kurashita Tsukimi is a "kurage (jelly fish) otaku" girl who wants to be an illustrator. She comes to Tokyo and starts to live in a girl-only apartment Amamizukan. One day she meets a fashionable lady, who saves a jelly fish. But she turns out to be a man in drag.

So basically it is about a jellyfish otaku girl who meets a handsome/beautiful crossdresser who has a 30-year old virgin brother who has a bitchy bitch who blackmails him. Ruler of the Land- about seemingly useless guy who's actually a powerful warrior. Mostly swordfighting and martial arts, though later on there are things such as 'spiritual pressure'. Action, adventure. Very good.

Imawa no Kuni no Alice- people get dragged into some kind of post apocalyptic world were they need to complete 'games' to survive. By completing games, they extend their 'visas' so they can stay in that world. If their visas run out... well, it doesn't end well for them. Psychological, drama. One of my favourites.

Doulou Dalu- a powerful martial artist steals some secret techniques and commits suicide. However, he is reincarnated in the body of a young boy in a world where people fight with the power of souls. Manhua, colored, might be worth checking out. Adventure, action, fantasy, shounen.

Doupo Cangqiong- a young and talented martial artist suddenly loses his powers and reputation. He tries to regain them with a help of the spirit of a powerful potion master. Similar in style to Doulou Dalu. Adventure, action, fantasy, shounen.

Kingdom- about a guy who wants to become the greatest general and about wars in chinese history. Historical, action, seinen.
Magi- Labyrinth of magic -set in a world were enormous places called 'dungeons' exist and those that conquer them are granted power by spirits known as Djinni. Adventure, Shounen.

Magi- Adventures of Sinbad - a spinoff/prequel to Magi focusing on Sinbad. Same genres.

Yamada kun to 7 nin no Majo - about a boy and a girl who can switch bodies. As it turns out, there are 'witches' at their school and they have all sorts of powers. Romance, comedy, gender bender. While I usually can't stand these types of manga, this one is really good.

Tower of God- Adventure, shounen webtoon about people climbing an enormous tower (and I mean enormous- each floor is practically a world of its own) and passing various tests in order to reach the top.

Shokugeki no Soma- manga about cooking. The protagonist enrolls a prestigous cooking academy that has standards so high that real life chefs probably wouldn't be able to pass. Includes exaggerations of food's deliciousness to the point were people have foodgasms. School life, comedy, ecchi, shounen.

Liar game- an overly innocent girl who puts way too much trust in people and never lies gets dragged into the 'liar game' were people compete against each other in a series of games which one can only win by decieving others. The art is not really good but the games are very interesting. Psychological drama.

Psyren- people who answer a phonecall from a mysterious person known as Nemesis Q end up in an alternate reality and become 'Drifters' who can travel between that world and their own. They also become able to use PSI powers. Shounen.

Blade of the Immortal- an immortal ronin kills people, hoping to get rid of his immortality. Lots of swordfighting. Martial arts, historical, seinen

Great Teacher Onizuka- an idiotic character becomes a teacher in order to get involved with hot female students. To his disappointment, he ends up in a class of monstrous kids who would be thrown in jail if this was not a manga and who have already driven their past teachers insane . It's filled with bullies, blackmailers and sadists. With his completely unorthodox approach, he manages to win them over. Comedy, school life, shounen. Highly recommend it.

Feng shen ji- the emperor rebels against the gods and is killed. His son is saved by his mother who transfers his soul to another body. The former prince must now live as a slave but because of his partly divine lineage he is sought by the rebel gods who want to coexist with humans rather then rule over them. As he grows in power, he becomes a threat to ruling gods and plans to overthrow them. In color, action, adventure, seinen, historical, fantasy. Very awesome.

Cavalier of the Abyss- an immortal guy wants to kill the king for slaughtering his village. Eventually he gets involved in battles between various clans and to further complicate things, it is revealed that he may not be just an ordinary villager but a person of much greater importance. Shounen, fantasy. Might be confusing at first due to a very long flashback (entire arc!) in the beginning so reading the prequel is recommended.

Immortal Regis- prequel to Cavalier of the Abyss, focusing on the king. He is killed, ressurected by a necromancer and brought to the world of Chaos. His brother gets possessed by a god-like being that wants to control the world and he has to become a king to stop him. Same genres as the above.

Dorohedoro- Likely my favourite. The protagonist is a guy with a lizard's head who doesn't know how he got it. It's set in 'The Hole', a ghastly, hideous, dystopian place full of filth. It's denizens are often kidnapped by magic users who use them for experiments. The style may not appeal to you as it's very sketchy and rough but it adds to the atmosphere of messiness, making everything look grotesque. Even so, some of the characters are disturbingly positive. Horror, seinen, adventure, supernatural, comedy.

I like gekkan shojo nozaki kun or d-frag it is very funny. I like kimi to boku too,simple but interesting story, that manga tells the story of a group of students who had been friends since childhood.
