I know this is a kind of over-used, but what is the best visual novel? In my opinion, It's Steins;Gate. But, I would like to know other people's opinions. c:

A personal favorite of mine is Katawa Shoujo. Then there's Persona which is half visual novel. Not sure if that counts, but fuck it. I like that game.

Rewrite, by the creators of Clannad is in my opinion one of the best I've ever played. I also enjoyed Katawa Shoujo, though even that game left a lot to be desired...(Being free, having an interesting setting and cast, and wonderful art does give it quite a few bonus points.)
Recently I started Shikkoku no Sharnoth and it's been fairly promising so far, and might end up surpassing the above two in my heart's ranking. I suppose only time will tell!

It'd take a while to determine my favourite VN, but an extremely high contender would have to be Subarashiki Hibi. It's extremely pretentious and references a lot of works, but it very good nonetheless. A translation is currently being done by a couple of good friends at TLWiki, and is at 92% right now, so I recommend you go check it out when it drops.

Haven't played many, but I definitely agree that Rewrite by Key is certainly my favorite. A lot of character development and a lot of time to make sure that you will be emotionally invested in every route you choose. Grisaia series is a close second. Muv-Luv left me with PTSD and Saya no Uta almost made me check into a mental hospital.

My favorite is definitely G Senjou no Maou. As I tend to get bored with just slice of life, it's really important for me that the story pulls me in fast. Plus, I like that the moral ambiguity protagonist.

There is a visual mystery novel called Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I won't spoil much it's a very complex story. There's an anime and a manga adaption for it as well.

I agree Baka-chan, the anime was what got me into the Visual Novels since it left me so confuse. But it's one of the best mystery visual novels I've encountered so far!

A lot of really good novels were presented so far. But i too think, Steins;Gate has the lead. I wonder why noone mentioned ef yet, this one swinged my mood quite a few times.

I love the Umineko VNs. I used to read it when I was younger and it certainly changed the way think. It's about a family who gets stuck in an island and gets murdered one by one. An unconventional mystery and romance (in retrospect, it's a battle between mystery and romance) with amazing female characters.
Fate/Stay Night is also good but I think it's kind of overrated =p The characterization is amazing though.

My favorite would definitely be G-Senjou no Maou. Great antagonist and although the 3 side girls aren't as great, the main female character is an extremely good character. Also has a great plot backing all of it up.
