I don't really have the best definition of what "visual novels" are, but they're games that involve a ton of reading (which I like). They're games that make the player choose choices to progress through the game, however, there are a few that have small mini games, like Toradora! Portable. Almost all of the visual novels are wrapped around romance with either one or two girls, or harems (personally, I like playing ones with harems, because it's more fun picking one girl, and trying to end with her). And depending what you're into, there are tons of visual novels that have lots of boobs. like. a lot. like buckets of breasts. Seriously. If you're looking for some to play, I recommend Katawa Shoujo (Amayzun music and story), Yume Miru Kusuri (boobs and interesting story), or Deardrops (A pretty good story with 4 girls to choose from). Like I said, I don't know if my definition is accurate enough, but enjoy playing them, and ready your napkins, cause shits going to make your penis (or vagina) cry.

They're games that show you stories. The goal from the games is the endings. The endings you get is depending on what choices did you choose. What you get from the games can be really awesome endings and also can turn into pretty fvcked up endings. Most of them are contains adult scenes (example: "Grisaia no Kajitsu" & "G-Senjou no Maou"). But there are some that didn't contain it but have a really good stories & brings your tears out (example: "Steins;Gate", "Little Busters!", & "Clannad"). You can start from "Katawa Shoujo" if you're still new with these kind of games. I just play these games if I get bored or have nothing to do.

Its similar to ñovel but in a game. That's why its called visual novel. The genres aren't limited to romance. There are adventure fantasy types of games that can be called visual novel but more interactive. There are also gore or horror like corpse party or daganropa.

It's just a visual novel, literally. You click through a novel. The text is shown, usually at the bottom, with both dialogue and narration. Above that, there are flat images of the characters, and their expressions change based on what's happening in the game (sometimes, they'll be lipsynched to audio as well). Behind the characters, there will be a picture of a setting (such as a school room, or an office, or a bedroom, etc) that changes with the story. Some of them are slightly animated. Most, if not all, have music playing. Some have sound effects and voice acting.

There are action, fantasy, slice-of-life, tragedy, and romance visual novels. You usually have to make a decision in the main character's stead about what they would say every few scenes. You get a unique ending based off those decisions (usually a good ending, a bad ending, or a "true" ending that was written into the original story).

There are also kinetic novels, which are visual novels that don't have choices. They're less interactive but are often more engaging since you don't have to stop to make strategic decisions for particular endings.

Yeah clannad is pretty good considering it has a kickstarter right now to bring it to the West that's doing good.

>>8 not the first one really it's more rpg. The second game book of shadows is closer to a visual novel minus the mode where you search and move around which is like a first person mode of the first game.

If My Heart Had Wings is also something to consider. It has bad translations though so its abit confusing and meaay but overall an amazing and somewhat original VN.

Most of the Fate series games are Visual novels, mostly they are written like an interactive book, where you can choose the route of the main character. This help any?
