Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.

The story is told through the perspective of the main character, using a first person narrative. The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV text box.

Katawa Shoujo contains adult material, and is created using the Ren'Py scripting system. It is under development by an international team of amateur developers, and will be released free of charge under the Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License. It will be released on January 4th 2012.

I am disappointed in myself, i ended up having to look up how to get to rins part. Everything else i had no issue with, besides getting hanakos neutral. Though i guess thats just because im lazy. Currently getting towards rins part in act 1. Good game overall, not complicated.

Lily decided to be sneaky n have a hidden ending.

I had to cheat using a flow chart to get all the endings, but the game overall was excellent, great story, its is easy to get caught up in the character story arcs for hours

This is a great novel, I truly enjoyed playing Lilly's and Emi's routes so far. I'm currently on Shizune's and still need to finish it. >_< I love Lilly's route so much. <3

Is indeed a very good game. Although I do have to say it's my first dating sim. Very well written story with characters that you actually start to care about. I even got a little misty-eyed when I ran into some of the bad endings.

I really loved Hanako's route I went and played it so many times even though I got all her endings I cried on her bad ending but I cried buckets with her good ending I love Hanako~! <3

Lilly's good ending was just amazing.

Well Katawa Shoujo has a pretty diverse storyline, to me at least.

But visual novels like Kanon, Air... or anything else by Key is incredibly diverse.

You just have to search around for VNs that fit what you like. ^^

While it is no award-seeking game, I found KS to be a very pleasant experience to read. I am surprised at how decently it handled its material, and the characters were overwhelmingly likable. There may not be one I disliked.

I started playing this after a whole group was talking about it on another forum, and I have to say I really love it. Part of why I'm playing is because I have some issues about amputees, and this actually seems to be helping me get over them a little. Rin and Emi are actually my favorites characters! I've only completely finished Shizune's path, but I'm playing five save files simultaneously, so the others aren't far behind. ^o^

I just beat the game man was it fun.

I was about to go create a thread for this and then I saw it right here. I finished Emi's ending just now. Mainly because I didn't know how to go for anyone else. But it was a pretty good story. Got really good towards the end, and not for the reasons most would think.

I just recently finished playing through all 5(technically 6) routes. Here is the order I got them in:

1. Kenji
2. Shizune/Misha
3. Lily
4. Emi
5. Rin
6. Hanako

My favorite had to be Shizune despite the fact that there were literally only 2 choices in her route. I just really connected with her. Same goes for Lily. God I wish they were real. All in all, I could play this over and over again and never get tired of it. Its just that interesting.

I just finished Emi's ending (all of them) and have decided to go for Rin's path out of spite because I REALLY hate Emi now >_<

I finally decided to take a look at this game after hearing what everyone was saying about it, and I have to say, I think this is a pretty good game (and that's coming from someone who never plays these kinds of games). Especially Kenji. Kenji is full of win XD

This game is pretty awesome. To those that made it (Four Leaf), you guys are awesome.

I played it once, and got the Emi good ending. After that I looked it up on youtube and I found some videos of a guy playing them and commenting. The guy made everything so funny that I haven't been able to play it with a straight face ever since.

KS is amazing... I fell in love with Emi on my first play through choosing everything as I would in real life and was amazed by how cute and adorable Emi was while being so strong and lonely at the same time... I'll stay with her as long as I can... However long it takes.

I went into this game expecting to love Hanako right off the bat... but Shizune happened on Act I, and she kept happening, and...

Well, my first route was Shizune. It was awesome.

Then I came back and started running Hanako's - I'm still on hers now. I dislike Lily as a character right now, based on the fact that she's annoyingly gentle.

If only Emi wasn't a crazy little running girl.

The only route I've taken so far is Lilly's route, and I can honestly say that feels were had. The reason why I love Katawa Shoujo is because it's not fetish masturbation material, but instead, they handle the different disabilities very delicately. Furthermore, the addition of disabilities creates a better character because every disability has a backstory, creating more unique characters.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I started playing it. It is a storygame.. :D

Went with Rin thinking, "Oh, this'll be fun! Rin's so funny!" No. I came down with a serious case of the feels.

I finished Emi's story (good ending yay!). I thought it was pretty good. I guess I'll play through with another character.

I finished Hanako's route just today, and I have to say, it instantly moved to my favorite path. It didn't make me cry, but it made me feel good. Feels were had, and it was just very sweet. As for Lilly's route, I was on the verge of crying, and it was one of my favorites. I took Rin's route, but sadly, I couldn't get emotionally attached to Rin. Rin would have to be more of a bro to me. Rin is awesome as a character, but the route itself didn't make me feel for Rin. Up next, I was going to take Emi's route, then Shizune's.

I just started playing this game today and it seems pretty solid right from the get go. I think I'll enjoy it.

You could "play" Narcissu.. It's a great VN but it really is just a story.. No choices or whatsoever.. But the story is great. I recommend you to download Narcissu 2 because it contains both.

I should point out that "running from school days" due to the Nice Boat ending is generally a sign that you never actually cared to look into School Days in the first place. It's a visual novel, and the ending everyone associates with it is just one out of many. It's the worst possible end, at that.

Meaning you have an entire cast of characters and stories which are perfectly good and non-gorey, yet you immediately discard it because of a single ending in a game you know nothing about.

What the fuck? At least provide a reason besides "durr, I'm ignorant and a sheep" for avoiding it. It's a good novel.

I have to say, I really like this visual novel. My favorite path was hanako's. The main reason I like it is because they didn't push her path as to be a sexual lust one. You have sex with her once, and that's it. I personally play visual novel because I like the stories about them, not because of the ecchi-ness (maybe a little..) her ending was lovely and it ended with a really nice scene. I LOVE EHT.

Played through it all, Hanako is still the most satisfying. On an unrelated note, here's pic.

Rin, I just blew my head up...Hanako's was my favorite anyway.

Im half way though Lily's, and I still have to do deaf-bitches rout too.

I have to say, that despite the lack of choices, Shizune's Route struck a chord with me. And I mean a BIG chord(Not like that, get your mind out of the gutter.). Followed closely by Lily, Hanako, Emi, and Rin. Rin's I found to be the funniest, but I couldn't establish an emotional connection. Emi, I liked her determination, but it just wasn't enough.

Order of awesomeness:

Hanako>50(Emi), Emi>Rin>Lilly>Shizune.

Hanako is so cute and I was happy for most of the story, except when she hid away in her room.

Emi was the immensely distant second, making me feel exactly as Hisao did the entire time.

Rin seems a lot like me, but uses a different medium to express her feelings than I do. Didn't really make me happy, but made me feel extremely accomplished to get to see her embracing the sun.

Lilly kept me too close to Hanako to really like her, but it did make me extremely sad when she was about to leave for the final time. Did make me feel happy to see her return.

I didn't really like Shizune and did her story just to do it.

I started playing it last week. I honestly didn't expect so many feels.

I played through Hanako's route first, and found it cute, but not that much special. Don't get me wrong, I liked, but a friend kept talking to me how good it was I kinda expected more.

Then I went through Shizune's route. I...liked it. A lot. Her personalite, and the contrast with Misha, and her family, and the storyline in general. I really liked it. It's my favourite, for now.

I finished Lilly's route yesterday. I honestly didn't expect the feels. So many feels. I *do* get emotional easily, but goddamn, I cried. The part where she says she decided to leave. It was...it was sad. Really fucking sad. And when the little music box started playing while Hisao was at the hospital. Oh god, I started laughing and crying. Neighbors probably didn't apreciated it, sice it was 3 AM, but what the hell, it was worth it.

Now I can't decide wheter go for Emi or Rin. Any suggestions?

I would go with Rin's arc. Her mindset is pretty intriguing if you ask me. Also, the neutral ending is a real killer...god it's just as feely as Lilly's neutral.

I started playing this before my computer got wiped. I didn't get very far, but it seemed really good and I might try to play it again.

i spent most of my holliday playing every route except hanako's (people have made me sick of her by endlessly ranting about it) cried like a little girl to lilly and rin. Emi and Shizune not as much though.

Really, all I see it as, pick a girl you want, go with her. That's it. I think people overemphasize the fact that the girls are crippled... I don't think it really matters. So someone is crippled, so what? That doesn't really matter to me, 'cause the person is still a person with a few different traits.

Also, the premise of you not falling in love with someone and dying 'cause of a broken heart is retarded.

I finished Emi's rounte, it was OK but nothing particularly special. The story was there, and i heard people say it was really sad so maybe some of the other routes are better and a bit more complicated, but from my experience, I agree with Day/Dia.

It's because her route didn't mean to attach you to her but to make you feel disattached and that made me to feel more feels. (who expected threesome when playing Shizune's route)

This game is annoying since once you finish a route you want to learn about what happens to Hisao and girl of your choice after you complete their story, yet you know there is currently not continuation of their story to be had, thus leaving you wanting more. I've played Lily and Shizune's routes. Lily's route was my favourite.

Apparently, there's a new "route" that one of the creators(?) made. It revolves around Miki (the girl on the track team with one hand) and her point of view I believe. It's not an add-on or additional route, it's just a typed script, from what I've seen. Just google "Summer's Clover" in google, and you'll find it.

I know this is an old thread, but I don't want to duplicate it.

Anyway, Hanako is the best girl, fight me if you disagree. And the Suzu path of Summer's Clover tore me up even more than any of the routes in the VN itself, even more than Rin's bad end.

Katawa was my very first VN and I have to say, ourlittle artist friend had the most feel-invested path of all. Loved the game (minus the nsfw, not my type) But the story was SO good, my gosh, it sold me on VNs as a format of storytelling.

Sure, you make up for it in the end, but Lilly's route is infinitely BETTER FOR HANAKO THAN HER OWN ROUTE, because when you stick with Lilly, Hanako gets to make her own friends in the Newspaper Club and BREAKS OUT OF HER SHELL ON HER OWN.

Katawa Shoujo is a favourite of mine. It's got one heck of a good plot, and tbh I can't choose my favourite girl >_< I like all of them!
