Have any suggestions actually been put to practice? (6)

I've been reading plenty of suggestions about new features, fixes and what not and I must admit, the community has some pretty cool ideas collectively. However when I actually look at this BBS, it seems kinda lacking in features, the ineffective communication and the message cluttering on popular threads makes life that much harder.

As you've probably guessed, I'm slightly new here so I can't say for sure but I'm guessing this website hasn't changed much since it's creation in 2010. Are these suggestions actually being noted or are we just talking amongst ourselves?

I honestly think it's time for a complete remake, include notification features, etc. I absolutely hate how the chat is run by a different group than those running the BBS, than those running the email clients, than those running the app, etc.

Everyone seems to be working independently.

Would it not be better to remake from the ground up with a central team of developers who work collaboratively? Keeping the dollars an open source community effort would mean rather than relying on the same one or two developers (who often get sick of it and stop updating) anyone can contribute as much or as little as they like. There are the details about reviewing submitted code, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue; the dollars have some pretty talented programmers as we've all seen.

Obviously, there are clear problems with allowing anyone to edit the site. Remember the password isn't even necessary to get in and the password itself is only a Google search away.

Regardless, I do think that the website could be improved quite a lot, but not by anyone. Maybe the head developers could hold some kind of 'Programmer recruitment' when they need it just to lessen the load and also to make more frequent updates.

I'm almost certain that the Dollars has quite an extensive group of qualified individuals who would be willing to do this and isn't the Dollars a community? I agree that maybe some of the more....responsible members should be given at least partial access to editing/developing this website

Any thoughts?

A lot of progarms are open source where anyone is allowed to push changes. These changes are often reviewed before being integrated so it's not like everyone can edit the website at will, but everyone has the option of contributing. It's pretty effective in the right communities.

The forum is operated by one guy: Reltair.
We email popular suggestions to him to see his opinions.
There are various secret moderators who are regular posters and maintain the boards.
The chat is completely independent to the BBS, completely.
The site has changed very little because, realistically, there isn't actually tonnes of changes that are necessary.
The about has been changed a couple of times, and the hit member counter was removed as it confused people, the reply button has been turned to please wait after a post to prevent double posting, and you can now change the size of the text box when writing a post.
If you have any notable suggestions, feel free to make a thread for them, just check previous threads before you do.

>>4 This.

Other notable community suggestions that have been implemented include adding many of the boards to your left, renaming boards to be more fitting, adding captchas, linking chatrooms, enabling saged replies, establishing a moderator system, adding more details to the archives, adding descriptions to the boards, etc.

The vast majority of what you see on the Updates page was from community suggestion.

There haven't been as many updates recently. I've heard from others that Reltair is working on changing the back-end to something more functional, but he's a busy guy, so it'll be a while before we see a ton of updates.

Also, "Everyone seems to be working independently." That's kind of the point. This is an anon board where everyone is doing their own thing, not some knitting club with a supply comity.
