Privatizing the Countries Board (7)

I think we can all agree that the Countries board has gotten out of hand. Every single newb that happens across it feels the need to disregard the index and make a new thread for their country.

I'm proposing that we remove the "Create New Thread" option in the Countries board to anyone except moderators. We can add a thread that's like, "If you don't see your country / state /province / whatever in the Index, or if you have an idea for a thread for this board, then mention it here so a mod can make a thread for it." This would let us delete all the duplicate threads and ensure no more are made.

I know this'll be more effort on the mod's part, but I feel like we can't just leave the Countries board as it is. It's pathetic. You can't use it for anything interesting because of how quickly it gets spammed. Opinions?

If we were going to take a first step in privatizing something or otherwise restricting new thread creation, I would think we'd start on Main.

I don't go on Countries a lot, so I'm not sure if that is way more out of control than Main is, but I do go on Main a lot, and it is pretty bad there.

We could remove that shortcut at the top...

>>2 Countries is a lot worse than Main. The spam on Main is nothing compared to it.

I don't agree with doing it on Main because Main is a place for legitimate discussion. There's a lot of room to make new threads on Main since it has several different purposes. Good threads are made on Main. Bad threads are, too, but there's still a chance of something good coming out of them.

Countries, however, serves only one purpose: to provide threads for local areas for people to chat in. It's not like you can pop into Countries and make a legitimate discussion about something. It's maybe a few times a year that a thread is made that isn't a duplicate.

Yeah, the Countries board is a great big wasteland. I used to stay away from it entirely before remaking the Index thread, now I visit it about once or twice a day and there's at least like 5 duplicates every day it's incredible.

Around the time the first Index closed, another populated thread closed and then there were more than 20 new threads made (give 'philippine' a quick search, they're all still there), none of them with mire than a handful of posts, before I stepped in and asked people to decide on one and linked it the index :\

I'm into this idea. It's up to the mods if they're willing to do it or not, but you've got a thumbs up from me.

>>3 I have just looked and I see what you mean. With the specialized nature of the board, it would make sense to close off making new threads.

I support this idea, like >>4 said if the mods are okay with doing it.
