hey so i know theres a major problem of having way too many unnecessary threads. so how about this: when posting a thread, users have the option of setting a timer. like 1 week for example. then when the week is up, the thread expires and is deleted. this would be really good in the personal/help section because most need advice for a certain situation that is not gunna last forever so a infinite thread isnt necessary.

There is no need. If the topic itself is decent, it deserves to stay. If it's not decent, it gets permasaged, and the system in place deleted those permasaged topics anyway.

Having a lot of outdated threads in the archives isn't really a bad thing, as far as I know. If they are buried, that's fine. The problem is when there are a bunch of worthless threads on the front page, and in those cases people probably wouldn't set a timer themselves. If they didn't know how to make a thread properly, they probably wouldn't know to set a timer.

As for my own opinion, I don't think it's necessarily important for organization, but it would be nice for time-restrictive threads like special event missions or convention threads. On the other hand, it's nice being able to go back and read them later on, even if the event is done.

I'm on the edge. I don't know if I'd like the idea or dislike it. I do know that it shouldn't be mandatory to set a timer tho, and I'm not positive how well that kind of system would work on a BBS versus a forum.
