4Chan "Settings" (7)

1 Name: Smittyblack : 2012-10-24 20:32 ID:IE3PNqzF [Del]

At the top of 4Chan boards, there's a "Settings" button with a lot of neat features.
If we had those, the site would be so much cooler.

Main features I like:
-Thread watcher
-If you hover over a >>Quote it shows the quote if it's off the page. If it's on the page, it just gets highlighted.
-Quote nesting
-In-thread image enlargement

Mm... I think that's it. Other than custom CSS, but it's not really needed.

Which ones do you agree or disagree with? What should be kept, added, or removed from the list?

-Thread Watcher
No need, this site's slow enough as is. Any thread can be searched for by ctl+f or cmd+f after hitting "View All threads" to the right.

-If you hover over a quote it shows it next to your mouse
Not really necessary. Threads are limited to 1337 posts per thread, and again, this site is slow. You'll be able to follow the comments easily in every thread simply by checking once a day.

-Quote nesting
I'm going to assume you mean when you click a post number, the reply box opens up with the post number inserted. Again, the threads only go to 1337 posts, and each thread has its own post count. Not necessary seeing as the most you'll ever type to reply is ">>(4 numbers)"

-In thread image enlargement
This site is mostly discussion, except for the Random board. Hell, Main doesn't even allow images to be uploaded. All the images are already put at a rather large size, rather than cut down to a small box on 4chan. There's no real need to enlarge the image because:
a) that would put more pressure on the server, which I assume is small enough already
b) images are standard as an already large size
c) it's not difficult to click the image to see it in a larger resolution

-Custom CSS
We're WAY far off from that, and it's not going to happen anytime soon. Partially because bandwidth, partially because it's mostly unnecessary.

This site's much slower than any board on 4chan, and doesn't need many of the same features due to a slower site.
Hell, we only got sage a month or two ago.
Just remember this isn't 4chan, OP.
Rules 1 and 2, blah blah blah.

Pretty much what black said, but in a less fancy way.

>>2 The fact that we aren't 4chan isn't a reason to completely shove aside these suggestions. It's all for convenience, anyway.

A simple "I don't think we need it" would have sufficed. Suggestions here get passed on through when a decent-sized chunk of members agree it would be convenient or a good improvement, after all. If you look at the list of site updates we've had, a great number of them were "not necessary."

That said, I don't have an opinion either way. I wouldn't mind, but I also don't think it's particularly needed either for the reasons stated. I just disagree with presenting them as an ultimatum rather than discussion input.

I think there should be a function (that I don't even think 4chan has, except for 1 part of it) is Email updates. A sort of function, like for name inputs, where you copy your Email in, then on any topic you've done this in when you posted, it constantly gives you email updates. Then if you delete your email from it when posting again, it cancels it.

So then it'll just send you a list of, say the first post, and the last 5 or 10 posts in a topic, and who posted it.

>>5 Well we do have an RSS feed for this site, though I've been having problems with how it updates. With that in place and working properly, it should make an email function actually doable.

I rather like the idea of hovering over a quote thing and having it show the quote it's for if it's off the page. It would make it easier to find the stuff someone quoted in the longer threads
