Issues with ID and more than one person. (23)

1 Name: Kow : 2012-10-02 15:07 ID:Zo4tGMaB [Del]

So while browsing the site one of my friends, Pxi, noticed that our ID codes after our names were the same due to the fact that we are using the same internet connection in the same building. we figured this may confuse some people, so i wanted to ask, is there a way to fix it, like set an ID code to a specific computer as opposed to a certain internet connection? any help is greatly appreciated if there is a way to do so.

You could use proxies, but I've never run into this problem before, so that's the best I've got for now. Otherwise, use tripcodes, and don't go promoting or white-knighting for each other. Lest you be accused of samefagging.

I believe that using a separate computer(even on the same network) generates a different ID.

I think Leigha explained that somewhere...

>>3 No, that's entirely wrong. The ID is based on IP. If two different computers have the same IP, then you will have the same ID.

>>4 No, each internet connectable device has an IP unique to that device. I may not know a lot about computers, but that much I do know.

6 Name: Zeckarias !LoWvdc0uhQ : 2012-10-02 18:50 ID:1p76D0Ys [Del]

>>5 It depends really. For most situations each connectable device CAN and SHOULD generate it's own unique IP address, but that isn't always the case. Servers have different behaviors based on settings, locations, system models, service provider, etc. which makes it possible for multiple devices on the same server to have the same IP.

Coincidentally, this same idea can occur conversely, because I've observed my IP change several times on the same device and the same server over the course of several months with no logical explanation. This problem of one server submitting the same IP for separate devices has been acknowledged before, with the final solution only being "one of you needs to use a proxy."

>>6 great thanks, i think the reason for it is the fact that we use our schools internet for this when its an issue.

>>7 Yeah, schools do that. If your school filters proxy sites, you could always just Remote Desktop to your home computer, and use it the same way.

9 Name: Pxi!r.3MwOAasY : 2012-10-03 15:05 ID:Zo4tGMaB [Del]

I may try to look into that. I'd have to wait a while though, since there isn't any internet at my house and won't be for a month or two.

Let's go ahead and test it, while we're on this subject.

Survey says: Elunore is wrong.

13 Name: Elunore!HIwambGeWE : 2012-10-03 16:46 ID:VMo6cfxu [Del]

>>12 I never claimed I was right, I said "I believe..." a.k.a I assume, I guess.

I admit my assumptions were wrong and I acknowledge the fact, but Anon, unless you have something worthwhile to add to the conversation other than pointing out what others never claimed was true, you might as well just stay out.

"No, each internet connectable device has an IP unique to that device. I may not know a lot about computers, but that much I do know."

I interpreted this post as you being confident that you're right, when I told you you were entirely wrong.

15 Name: Elunore!HIwambGeWE : 2012-10-03 17:02 ID:VMo6cfxu [Del]

>>14 I was under the impression you were talking about the issue of each computer generates a separate ID, because that was the issue Black was talking about most recently in the thread. I suggest next time you want to address an older issue in the thread, you put the post number in order to clarify.

And according to Zeck, I am at least partly right in the fact that each device can should have a unique IP.

On another note, what kind of survey only surveys one person. That seems pretty biased.

Guys, it was a simple test. Now we now.
We're not going to shitpost about who was right or wrong, let's just move on before this becomes an internet soap opera.

17 Name: Kanra : 2012-10-04 19:17 ID:dyxhpvYz [Del]

Personally I think we should just "register" with a username and a password. That is just me though.

18 Name: Pxi!.q91yu2v8s : 2012-10-04 22:47 ID:NNXW1q09 [Del]

The reason that that isn't the case is for convenience and anonymity. More people are likely to post if they didn't have to register first as that takes time and people are lazy. I probably wouldn't have myself infact.

19 Name: Zeckarias !LoWvdc0uhQ : 2012-10-05 07:15 ID:1p76D0Ys [Del]

>>17 We've discussed that before. That requires the use of a lot of wasteful data. Everyone that registers is added to the registry, and as you can see that's roughly over 100,000 people. Many of which don't even come around anymore, but would complain if their info was deleted if they did.

Instead we designate the bulk of our data usage to the Boards, where it should be.

I agree with the way things are set up now, at this point in time i think its just the schools internet that does this. Im assuming it has something to do with the security system they have set up, it blocks most websites that arnt academic (im surprised this site isnt blocked even) even on my personal laptop, which i bring to school.

>>17 You do. It's called getting a tripcode. Put an exclamation point after your name in the Name: field and put a password after that. You can play around with in in the Test board. Your name + the resulting combination of letters is your username + password.

Personally, I think that's all we need for a BBS.
