Dollar's Magazine/Board Suggestion ( I'd rather you read it all) (51)

1 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-03-08 18:30 ID:31dWi/p+ [Del]

This is more so 2 suggestions in one, that both go hand in hand, together. The first half doesn't have anything to DIRECTLY do with the board, yet. The second half does.

Hear me out.

I remember where one of the Dollar fan sites came up with, and created (a crappy) Dollars Magazine/ News letter thing.

It sucked balls.

I wanted to talk to the people on here to see how they would feel if we had our own. A whole magazine, may it be weekly or monthly, based on the best that our community has to offer.

For an example:

Say we did it monthly, and had a section dedicated to "Rising Artists" in which lists off all the top Artists we've gathered in a month's time. From Writing, to drawing, to creating music.

Then we have another section dedicated to the "Top Contributors". For that section, it'd be those who are the most helpful, those who also post actual topics of discussion, and those who take it upon themselves to keep the site organized.

After that, maybe a section dedicated to showing the people the list of extreme 'dumb-asses' that we've had on, each month. Maybe make it the top 5 dumb-asses.

Now to the suggestion that warrants a topic in this board.

A small board under Art that has very strict rules.

Each month the new magazine in posted. The link, and the description. Each person until that month is over with, can post and talk in the topic about that month's magazine.

I'll give an example for what I mean.

Say the first month's Magazine was created, and the topic was made. Detailing it. People can post on it, and tell them what they like, dislike and so on.

But when that month is over with, they are no longer allowed to post in it. Maybe a week before the month is up, they've got to stop posting in it and wait for the next month's topic.

No one other than the person posting the topic, can post the cover image. Otherwise no images are to be posted.

This might not be a super big deal, as it doesn't hinder us in anyway, by doing it or not.

But by doing it, we're entertaining others, while informing them, as well as doing a sort of spot light to those who have actually done something noticeable.

Now I do want to hear opinions on it, so if you do like it, we can fine tune it, so it'd actually fit.

I'm tempted to call you out on starting yet another project. I'm serious about what I said,

Quality > Quantity.

Now about the idea itself, I remember there being a thread about a magazine, but people shot it down relatively quickly. Now is this magazine going to be online, or printed?

If it's going to be an online thing, I don't really see a problem for it. The thing is, Is there really a need for a magazine?"

Sure, it sounds like a fun idea and all, but I'm not sure how well it'll turn out. The art and literature boards don't have too many people so I'm sure you'll run out of ideas after.. 2, 3 months? You have to take into consideration that the BBS is a pretty small group. I'd say 1,000 (give or take some) members are actually active, maybe even fewer. I don't see how this could become a monthly, or even weekly thing.

If you have confidence that you can make this successful, by all means, do it. If you don't, then I wouldn't bother. You have the BBS chat, a game, your story/manga. I think you should focus on those before starting anything else.

I posted it so I wouldn't have to start it. Others would work together with it.

4 Name: Leigha Moscove !S3dRf9Ujsk : 2012-03-08 21:59 ID:bvkdXlAC [Del]

If we did it, I would help with it. I have one problem though. What I like about this site is that we are anonymous and don't stick out. Most people don't even know we exist. I like thinking of us as the behind the scenes people that people don't know are there, but, without them, the whole thing wold fall apart. I don't really want credit and if The Dollars got any credit I'd feel as if I'm getting it. Not to sound egotistical because I know we are all getting it and everything. I just don't like sticking out. I like hiding behind my mask and I don't want people knowing I'm there doing something. Ya know?

5 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-03-08 22:26 ID:31dWi/p+ [Del]

It'd be for people ON this site, though. To read; to be informed as well as entertained.
If you keep the actual place the magazine is hosted on, hidden, we'd not have a problem sticking out.

6 Name: StuffedFriia !HI4j9f3lc2 : 2012-03-20 20:18 ID:GK+rw8mH [Del]

So basically a magazine FOR Dollars BY Dollars? Like a secret Cosmo for just us? I'm in. If anyone wants to start this up, I wanna help in some way. >.>

7 Name: Swift : 2012-03-26 10:35 ID:OTlTzbDw [Del]

I think that this could be a good idea, if we can get it off the ground. I'm in for it, too. It'd be used to inform and entertain, like it was said before.

If we can collect a list of e-mail addresses, it would be good.

What if we had threads on each category, and I'm going to go and use Art as an example here.
One of us would start a thread with rules and a theme, and that thread would try to get the rest of The Dollars to create pieces of art dealing with that topic to send in to a panel of judges to pick the top five to feature in that month's issue. For those of you who get Game Informer, it would be like the art contest there.

Also, people could send in personal stories about the things they've done for the Dollars, or how we have affected them and their life, and stuff like that.

I'm up for it, mainly because a few of the projects I'm hosting are near completion. That stupid code business doesn't require much work, and it will be a while before anyone actually sends shit in for the chorus. The Dollars Day business doesn't require much time to discuss.

Yerp, I'm up for doing a project inbetween.

What program would we be using to make it? I mean, did you have any particular idea in mind when you made the thread, Thiamor?

9 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-03-26 19:56 ID:EzVZWdXQ [Del]

Well basically we need a few things.
1 being something that will help others be able to make a generalized layout. (Those used to this sort of thing wouldn't need it.)
Secondly, something along the lines of "Gimp" or if you've got Photoshop, would do.

Otherwise, anything that helps you make it, would work.

To make it interactive, we just need a free to use website. One in which we can get someone to code it, where the image itself is replaced with the image you're wanting to see.

For example, say you've got the Title page, and an arrow pointing to go forward. Click it, and it replaces the image itself, and doesn't have to actually reload the page to go to the next page.

I wouldn't know how to code it.

10 Name: StuffedFriia !HI4j9f3lc2 : 2012-03-26 20:19 ID:nPhyZ3h2 [Del]

I could try to find someone who codes. Shouldn't be too hard what with all the programming students at my school. Don't worry, I won't go blabbing all over campus about it. A lady knows how to keep a secret, ya know. :3

11 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-03-27 08:29 ID:iGdW/UNQ [Del]

I don't know. I'm not a big fan of an interactive one. It's not really a magazine, then; it's just a BBS news site that's made to look like magazine pages. Why not send out a mutli-paged news letter?

12 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-03-27 08:29 ID:iGdW/UNQ [Del]

Er, or something like that.

Or we could just find a program for online magazines. Still, my opinion stands that it's silly to just make a site to look like a magazine.

13 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-03-27 11:08 ID:EzVZWdXQ [Del]

Well, we could, but either way makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. Same message gets across.

Good, good.

We've updated it from Magazine, to detailed News Letters/Papers. If you can, TRY to post on here, what you think it should look like. The Layout, basically.

Wait, so it's going to be a newsletter now?

21 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-04-10 20:02 ID:VOUpbF/Q [Del]

Didn't someone...suggest it? Let me reread. I may have mistaken it for something else.

I kind of would like the idea...We could just post the new password on youtube or something...

WELL ANYWAY, let's discuss this.

Are we using an online program to make and email it, or are we just going to make it in publisher/word and email the individual file out?

29 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-04-12 14:16 ID:el9474dS [Del]

Probably easiest thing to do, would be an online program anyone could use, and post the pages on a topic dedicated to it.

But to knock down on spam and duplicate pages, in a sense, people should put their name on here, or somewhere else (literature probably?) stating what topic(s) they will be making.

We probably need a page cap, too. Each month, say 10 or 20 pages created.

Though 20 seems way too much.

30 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-04-12 14:53 ID:US72Rn3Z [Del]

>>29 (Newsletter = E-mail or Mail, hence why I said that. But I'm up for a variant~)

I would say 12 for the page limit. A good dozen. We really don't need a ridiculous number of pages :O

31 Name: Thiamor !yZIDc0XLZY : 2012-04-12 15:09 ID:el9474dS [Del]

It would be easier, with 1 place, the images, instead of sending it in an email. Given if we don't use a program that automatically sends it.

12 seems like a very decent limit. Not too big, not too small, and enough to list the important stuff.

Bumping for improved technology/access lol

If anyone's interested in doing this in the future, Blurb now allows you to create magazine designs with their free software. You can provide them print-on-demand for the cost of their shipping, as well as in PDF form to be freely downloaded from their site.

>>36 No need to bump when it´s already the first post on the board XD
However, post your ideas one more time here and let´s hope, that the others will find this thread lol

38 Name: Amore : 2017-08-17 06:49 ID:hVJxYXdv [Del]

Well, contact me for those who are in for this project. And let's start it. If we successfully were able to make it, then we will continue.

food for thought: If you ever wanted this to be successful in a physical format, you'd need ads to offset the printing / shipping costs, and some sort of distribution system that lets you get wholesale prices. (That's how free local newspapers print, pay wages, and still make a profit.)

IMO most people here are too young or poor or uninterested to pay for a weekly/monthly physical copy, but they'd go on a mailing list for a free one if it had interesting content. The bigger the list, the more advertisers will pay, and so on and so forth.

A digital mailing list will give good ground to expand off if anyone decides to do something physical in the future anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about it for now.

40 Name: Amore : 2017-08-17 14:03 ID:hVJxYXdv [Del]

We can also put advertisements for dollars products on the magazine!

41 Name: Amore : 2017-08-17 14:05 ID:hVJxYXdv [Del]

Guys, so to start with the magazine, we need two things.
1) someone who will give us a short story about 10 pages
2) someone who will bring 5 to 8 news that are rare and special (that includes about the dollars and Miscellaneous)
3) someone who will bring some paper games.
I will be preparing the magazine itself and edit it, for those who said will review it, will be the reviewers.

So who agree?

42 Name: Amore : 2017-08-17 15:04 ID:hVJxYXdv [Del]

I'll take a small group into the project and make a temporary magazine which will attract other members to join the project as well.

43 Name: OroseC !puodSbGaRU : 2017-08-27 12:01 ID:5aCqiPLd [Del]

I'd like to help any way I can
And I don't know if this was already discussed, but I agree with >>39. It would work as an online magazine that people can have subscriptions to. A printed magazine. But starting off free, and if we are successful in getting advertisers or funding in some way we can advance.

44 Name: blynndoo : 2017-08-27 16:41 ID:AibMD9EQ [Del]

I would like to take part in this! I think it would also be a good way to bring the community together. Also, we can spread the word about our missions (ex: the dollars pocket mission). Thiamore-san, and Amore-san, great idea!!! Amore-san, please let me know how I can help. ^.^
