Alrighty, so... We had a thread where we were discussing embed videos, and the ups and downs of this feature being incorporated into BBS. After a mere few posts, it was agreed upon that this feature, if added, should be restricted solely to the Music Board.

In the music board, there are tons and tons of threads, with link after link after link to Music Videos on YouTube. Now, this may sound lazy, however I'm quite sure that the majority of you wouldn't want to open each individual link in a new tab...

Note, that this is not a post about uploading videos onto the site, its about providing a function similar to Facebook where the videos themselves will be embed, like a preview of sorts.

Any thoughts regarding this?

hmmm. sounds like a decent idea i guess. could the site handle it though? i mean that sometimes it's tough for the site (at least for me) to handel uploading pics quickly and if there were any possible ramifications of this addition to the site then it would be ultimately counter productive and it would be more beneficial to just stop being lazy.

Right, but having a video embed, and having it uploaded are 2 different things...
I don't think embed videos will be that detrimental to the sites performance...

Granted, my knowledge is limited regarding this subject..

It still takes up time to load the videos, but that's based on a computer by computer basis, and wouldn't effect how the site runs it over all. If you got a good computer and Internet connection, it's fine.


But, given the 'situations' going down with copyrighted materials, I'd advise again'st it, because it can mess with us.

They arrested a guy who linked to copyrighted materials that was on a different site than his own. Having it embedded is even worse.

This is the only problem I have with it.

I guess it makes it harder to Rick Roll people.

Anyway. Since the music is uploaded onto YT, and we're just 'framing' (or whatever method we use) into this site. We're not tecnically responsible for distributing anything; it's still the uploader's responsiblity.

No, we haven't. It's entirely possible, but if I'm not mistaken, some people had misgivings about it making the site cluttered? Ideally the embedded videos would have to be crammed into the space of a single post, when it's really not that big of an issue to simply link to youtube videos.

It's just one of those low-demand aesthetic improvements to the site, is all. At this point, nobody has denied that it's possible, but I don't think there's been much rapport to get it done either.

Just wondering, but would this make the site slower? I know that if I open a few youtube tabs or anything that involves Adobe Flash player, my computer is extra slow.

Actually if there were a board just for videos, where it was the only place the embedding would work, it'd not clutter it up as much. Plus since there isn't a big demand for it, it won't clutter up very easily.

Like I said, the main, if only, argument against it was that it would just be needless clutter, having to load every video on the current page. One of the major appeals of this sort of board is how lightweight it is, after all.

That or a 'video enabling' button just like the sage button, rather than an embed code, and when you click it, and upload a video, it goes into a Que, and once accepted by Reltair, it then loads, even after the topic is made, so people can see it.

This way they can be watched, and decide which to allow on.

Or, Reltair can just allow a couple of different other html codes to allow us to code in the video ourselves, but then again, that would be a bitch to code as well as force the site to load all of the videos when entering a thread. It would be even worse when the thread is near full and most of the posts are videos.

Ultimately, A "show video" button combined with this >>36, should work. Instead of it only going to Reltair though, I say allow any of the mods to accept it. I only say this because I doubt Reltair would want to accept 20+ videos a day. It'll be a less hassle for him if he had others help him go through it.

Also, rather than upload the video, you just post the html code or embed code. The codes for this would be a bitch though because you'd have to allow it to be compatible with many video sites.

Leigha suggests the embed code anyway in >>37. Youtube even provides the embed code, making it that much simpler.

On further inspection, it seems you can customize the frame size for the youtube video when you embed it. So an extra field in the new reply box for youtube URL's is all it needs - though the URL would have to be checked and parsed and shit to ensure it's an embed-able youtube video.

I sort of like the idea of a "show video" button that just hides the embedded video until you click it, much like a spoiler tag, but it again begs the question - if you have to click something before loading the video anyway, why not just link to youtube? What positive result is there from viewing it on a resized window on BBS itself, when you can just open the video in its natural size in another window entirely?

Don't forget that the BBS is a message board, not Tumblr.

And to be honest, I'd be a lot more likely to check out the bands which are posted in the Music board if I don't have to go on my slow computer and look them up myself. If a video is right there, they can get a lot more exposure.
