Stickied Posts/Threads? (34)

1 Name: mira !aLYAkUU9Sc : 2012-01-08 23:23 ID:4oabnQa8 [Del]

I just made a post about a USA States subboard for countries, and then saw the directory post for Countries! whoops.

That got me thinking that there should be an ability to sticky important posts/threads, definitely.

Directory? You mean the View All Threads button? Or otherwise known as Archives? God, it's getting a lot of nicknames, I need to keep track of it, in some way.

But anyways, your idea isn't unheard of. It's been thought of and discussed around since... The influx of stupid threads on Main. Dunno what happen to those discussions, they're around. Somewhere. I forgot the outcome of such discussions.

Anyways, my opinion? I agree. If you want, you could go email Reltair about this to hurry the process and get his attention on this faster.

Yeah, even after only being here a few hours I've seen quite a few misplaced threads (including my own, lol), so I figured this would be a reasonable suggestion. I knew people would already have had the idea, but there weren't any threads for it so I posted.

By the Directory, I meant the big post you made with all links to the different threads with the different states and countries and stuff. Good work! You do a lot around here. :D

>>4 Ah, yes, index. Sorry, the word slipped my mind. :P

6 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2012-01-08 23:46 ID:8T1rdFbk [Del]

... I find it a bit hilarious that "index" was in the thread's name too, in the Countries board. Also a bit facepalming.

Bumpin'.

Seems like something that would fall under the Admin's discretion himself. It might be more suitable to have something hard-coded in, like a separate page or something altogether.

I personally don't think one board should constantly have one thread at the top. On the page, yes, which is why we bump, but having it at the very top defeats the purpose - threads get pushed to the top when they are updated.

But I do agree that certain things like the FAQ on Main or the location index in Countries should remain visible at all times, for informative purposes. Whether these should be threads, with responses, or separate, hard-coded pages, I'll leave to discussion.

I, too, thought about how inconvenient it would be to have one thread at the top at all times. But I thought of something like the image above (sorry about the detail, it was done in MSpaint very quickly!)

The Stickied Threads would be in small bars or bubbles at the top of the page where the posts would be, in similar bubbles to the categories on the side perhaps. That way, posts could still be seen and then the stickies would be there for people to access.

12 Name: mira !aLYAkUU9Sc : 2012-01-09 12:16 ID:4oabnQa8 [Del]

Oops, forgot to add that the red squiggles in the image represent where the stickies would be, and the 'blah' square is a post.

So tags?
Isnt that the same exact thing as going into the archive, pressing ctrl/cmd +f and typing in a word? sounds the same.

14 Name: mira !aLYAkUU9Sc : 2012-01-09 18:04 ID:35ZPRDgE [Del]

>>13
No; I mean they should appear on the front page of each board all the time. See, new guys don't really think to check the Archive (I sure didn't, lol), which is why they should be availible as an easily-visible link on each board. This would help new users easily see and access the FAQs and board indexes.

Also, another note, admins/mods would obviosuly be the only ones able to sticky a thread.

15 Name: sleepology : 2012-01-09 19:39 ID:8CcfLvNp [Del]

Then they should lurk. Its a basic function, that is easily able to be found out about if they dont know about it already, and doing tags/stickies just sounds like a way for people to be lazy. Imo it would be extremely underused or get tagged with stuff that is unrelated or unnecessary.

>>15

But the Admin would be the only one to sticky things, why would there be unnecessary stuff? :s

>>16 I wouldn't want to bother Sir Reltair.

He already has to delete posts and change things pretty frequently. The important threads are just the ones that are bumped a lot. If they're worthy of being bumped, then they must be pretty important, no?

Not a bad idea, but it's not like people can't live without.

>>17

Perhaps he could assign some moderators? Of course, they wouldn't have the ability to ban or any of that; (that'd go against what the Dollars stand for, eh?), they could just tidy up; sticky threads and delete/move others.

19 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2012-01-09 21:11 ID:8T1rdFbk [Del]

"11-06-2011: Added in a moderator interface."

So according to the Updates page, we have a mod interface, added in October. We can assume he has already put in some mods. Just sayin' yo.

Oh, well that's good. Perhaps he's working on that, then. Jolly good!

This is a good idea, I was just about to suggest it myself and I'm surprised it was never implemented.

http://myanimelist.net/forum/?board=1

Although that site is a forum it gives a good example of how sticky threads are useful for keeping the important topics like rules and the top of the page.

28 Name: Count_Duckula !u5KL.jOOCU : 2012-08-28 14:46 ID:u20WYZ6N [Del]

This was a good idea that most people agreed upon, how come it hasn't been followed up. The amount of times the FAQ thread needs to be bumped is ridiculous, if it was "sticked" to the main board the only posts on there would be question instead of pages filled with the word bump.

29 Name: Black!BLACKFJv1Q : 2012-08-28 17:39 ID:LORiNvh4 [Del]

The idea of a stickied thread wouldn't be of much use. The only thread I can see being possible stickied is the FAQ, so the entire purpose of the suggestion would be for a single thread.
Honestly, the FAQ gets bumped more often than anything (that I bother to check, anyway). People over the months still haven't bothered to read it, and putting it at the top of Main won't necessarily solve the problem either.

Lol I'm resurrecting this, but I do support the notion.

However, to counteract >>29's argument,it wouldn't be just one thread. The stickies wouldn't be entirely useless, and it seems like an unnecessary hassle to constantly bump important threads such as the Read This If You're New thread.

Although I'm not saying that people shouldn't use the Archive (AKA the View All Threads button) and simply search for threads using ctrl+f; that's how I found this thread in fact. But it just seems like an effective way to reduce the amount of spam even if it's only by a fraction.
