This has been brought up before several times, but I thought it deserved its own thread so we could get a consensus on this once and for all.

We're all familiar with the crazy idea that non-Japanese media exists out there, I hope. Anime and Manga are the Japanese equivalent to Cartoons, or Animation, and Comics, or Graphic Novels. This often leads to confusion when it comes to the latter options as to where you are supposed to post them. Comics end up in both Manga and Literature, while Animation ends up in both Anime and Film. As a result, it makes it harder to figure out where people have posted things if you ever go looking for them.

There are a couple different solutions to this, and I'll outline them here in a biased way because I'm typing this.

Add new boards/sub-boards - Adding a new board completely for Animation or Comics could be done, or even adding them as sub-boards to the already existing Anime and Manga. While this has been suggested, I prefer the other options because this requires an unnecessarily distinct separation between similar topics.

Alternatively, Animation could fall under Film, and Comics could fall under Art. This makes a lot of sense, but as before, I find the blatant separation between these and their Japanese counterparts to be unnecessarily distinct.

Rename the boards - Simply change the names of the boards to what I called them above. I remember insertnamehere recommending that at one point. It's a pretty easy solution, and it would potentially broaden our first impressions; assumptions tend to be made wherever Anime is concerned, and while that's erroneous, it's a plus to have that stigma removed.

In fact, building on the sub-board idea as well, Anime could be added as a category under Animation, and Manga under Comics, if people still prefer a separation.


Keep in mind that moving things around too much is kind of a pain to deal with, on part of the Admin. The solutions above probably require less work than moving an entire board to a different category or something like that. If anyone else has suggestions, keep them within reason. Let's get this settled already!

It's been brought up on threads that were about different topics, sleepology. Each time, the idea was only entertained as far as the actual topic went (such as "where do I post this" or things saying we should get rid of the anime board altogether).

I know the procedure. The topic has never been discussed primarily before.

I love how >>2 only read the first half of the first sentence and ignored the other half which spells out that we haven't had a thread for this. Next time, before jumping on someone for duplicate posting check whether said duplicate thread exists first.

Anyways, for the comics I think that renaming the board is more appropriate, as there doesn't appear to be that much traffic and interest to warrant a sub-board. I guess the simplest renaming we could have is "Comics + Manga", although we could really go for "Drawn non-interactive visual mediums that incorporate text regardless of art style".

For western shows however, I thought they were doing fine of the Films board. It's a bit harder to go with renaming the Anime board if that's the direction that we want to go for, unless we go with one that's a chunk of words like my (sarcastic) second suggestion, but once again it doesn't really feel like there's enough traffic to warrant a sub-board.

after reading through this, it does seem like it has potential, but with how ive seen things play out in the relatively short time ive been here, things dont go as smoothly as expected.
I havent really looked through all the boards so i dont really know how much traffic they get, but if its thought of as a necessity then im for it. if its just something wanting to be done so that more organization can be made for something rarely used, then i dont really think it should be changed from how it is now. Renaming it if anything else seems like the best solution though, but there really is just so many nit picky things we could do. For example, we could say that film only counts as mainstream movies and make a completely new board for non-mainstream movies, which wouldnt make any sense, but as an example i think it fits.

Yes for the renaming. Western animation or comics aren't all that often brought up around here, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a place for them or that we should settle with improvised solutions like putting cartoon series under Films or comics in Manga, Literature or Random. The Animation Board will still probably be filled with anime and the Comics board with manga but at least other things would have a place to fit into as well.

I haven't seen any complete dissent to this, and generally people seem to be into the idea. If you really want the idea to get off the ground though and submitted as something for Reltair to change, it needs more than a couple people agreeing for it to become a significant majority opinion.

Is there any dissent to this? Additions, arguments, amendments? Reltair probably won't get on it right away, but I don't want to submit an official request (be it here or through email) if we're just going to end up changing it anyway.

This way it opens up the 2 boards to a much broader range of topics, whilst still including the original.

Er. Something of note though.

I think there might be an issue with maybe the directory naming for the images? All of the images on the Animation board are broken now :/

Right, realized that was the issue right after posting that. Same problem on the Comics board, too.

Could that be an issue similar to the one on the random board's older posts, like in Chat Quotes?

On my screen its showing there not to be a bubble around animation/comics, just the word. Is anyone else seeing this or am i the only one

Refresh. That'll probably do it for you. But you'll have to refresh on every board to get the bubble.

Okay thats weird.. when i went to a different board, the bubble showed up, but wheni came back to this, it went away again. N now its showing up after going through every board to see which ones it wasnt working on. Guess it was just a temp issue
