Duplicate Thread problem (151)

1 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-18 10:05 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

So, I'm noticing WAAAAAAAAY too many duplicate threads, some in Games, some in Countries, etc. And we have the header on Main, saying "Please help keep the site organized by starting new threads in their appropriate board and checking for duplicate thread". But apparently, people can't read and it's not fucking enough. Any ideas?

My idea would be to put something in big bold letters under that heading, saying "USE THE VIEW ALL THREADS BUTTON TO YOUR RIGHT, AND CTRL + F"

But if you have a better idea than this, then post it here.

well. it wus stupid wen i first thought of it, but nao its just stupid and prolly bothersome, but hur's wut i think:

we should put the "USE THE VIEW ALL THREADS BUTTON TO YOUR RIGHT, AND CTRL + F" in the text box of the 'create new thread' thing. YKNOW? like.....whenever you click 'create new thread', the box where it lets you put a description/OP of your thread, it says that. We could put that there for a month or two and see wut happens, if theres no change, then we can just take it off. If there is change, thats good.

The bad part about it? Having to highlight and delete it all, becuz if you dont it would show up in your OP description and make you feel like a retard. but....MYYEEEHHHHH

People are inherently absent-minded and won't see nor heed the rules, despite it being plastered everywhere. In the end, it'd probably be more effective to have mods continuously cleaning the place up.

7 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-19 20:00 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

>>6 We have no mods by the by. People have to moderate the forums themselves. But most people don't want to, so a couple good heart people do it. And some of those(me mostly) are getting pissed and tired of moderating these assjerks for being absent minded.

Anyways, yes, it was a day late, whatever. Part of this post was to bump shit up. And the other was to respond.

I'm no computer genius, and I am a offender of this, but couldn't you just remove the New Threads button and make it that people would have to view the previous threads before starting a new one?

My dad is a computer programmer, and it is possible to have the New Threads button redirect you to the View All Threads page. However, this would confuse a lot of people who are clueless as to why it would be done because instead of reading THIS thread, they would start a NEW thread in say Main complaining about the redirect (IF they have the sense to click the New Thread button a second time). Also, for the removal of the button to take place until you're already in the View All page may cause similar concerns amongst the less-observant members. So it IS possible to force them to at least read the headers of each line, but there's no guarantee that they won't just skip over them to just post a new thread, and I'm sure that there will be lots of complaints. At least at first. ~~ I hope that was at least a little helpful.

Could we have it set so that new threads have to be approved first? I don't doubt that a lot of people will complain that it's TOO much moderating, but I think it would help. If not, then what about something that directs you to other threads with similar titles when you go to post it?

36 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-01-10 17:13 ID:cBEF1Mib [Del]

>>35 You can't completely delete a thread by yourself. You can delete the text in posts, but the comment spot is still there. The "Incorrect Password" usually refers to your change in ID (which is equivalent to your internet IP address). That is set up so someone else cannot delete your post; however, sometimes your IP/ID will change, rendering you unable to delete it yourself. I have a dynamic IP, so I run into this often.

Also i think it would help to have "are you sure there is no already existing thread" and in addition we should have threads catagorizable by both last posted, first posted, name of thread etc. That way people can find previous threads more easily and tjey can't say "oh i looked and couldn't find it."

>>41 By that logic, we'd have a constantly repeating cycle every week or so over the same damned topics.

Every week we'd get a thread in animation about the popular shonen anime of the week, and people would comment on it like it's the first damned time it's been talked about.

We'd get a thread every other day discussing our inherent purpose on this site, or our "colorlessness." Every person that contributes will do so as if people didn't already discuss it at length, like it was a new topic, and people that already did discuss it would have to restate their opinions or ignore it completely.

We'd have so many threads pertaining to the same damned thing fucking everywhere, and if one tried to look for an old one to reference back to discussions they've had, they would have to sift through an unorganized pile of every single time the topic has been brought up.

Saying duplicating threads is fine is like dooming us to a short term memory. Every time a thread hits the archive, it would just be totally forgotten. We would never make progress as a community, and we would be doomed to repeat the inane process of gathering information, only to subsequently forget we ever gleaned it in the first place.

What I think is, when someone goes to create a Thread, as you type a little box of similarly named Threads should appear so someone can double check that they are making a new Thread.

61 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2012-01-23 09:27 ID:l+O29Lru [Del]

>>60 There's a problem with that. A duplicate thread means something that is the same in topic, not just in name. Remember: A thread can have different names but same topic, or same name and different topic. Also, the original thread's name may be far off of what you're thinking, since a lot of members fail to type their thread's name correctly, or something.

Duplicate threads are probably caused because casual members who don't come here every day don't go searching through every thread in every subject just to see if their topic is already being discussed. And why should they? Alot of threads are old, have hundreds of posts, and the names to some threads don't tell people shit about what the thread is about. And duplicate threads do serve a purpose (all be it unintentional) of reminding people of the original thread and starting the conversation up on that topic again.

64 Name: Visce : 2012-01-28 09:26 ID:Wocc97DE [Del]

The header could be more noticeable, I think. And maybe appear on more boards than the main. The type of people who post threads on a whim are probably more likely to overlook something in small plain text on the top of the screen.
So, maybe bigger? Different colour? Red to indicate importance?

>>67 Then necropost. No one's gonna get on your case for necroposting.

Actually, necroposting, and your definition of thread death is incorrect.

"The act of posting in a forum thread that is too old to matter any more, or has served it's purpose." Urban Dictionary

Discussion threads always matter no matter how old they are, and discussion threads are never ending, thus its purpose will never be fulfilled, it's meant to keep going on and on until the thread itself closes, meaning it gets to 1337.

And honestly, the idea of "necroposting" and what to do, and etc, is on the FAQ.

69 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2012-01-29 11:51 ID:l+O29Lru [Del]

Here's Misuto with his thoughts on necroposting.

"It's encouraged to revive older threads, assuming they're about an unresolved or ongoing topic (like an update to a news article, or just a general discussion about a multi-sided issue).

When it comes to something like replying to month-old comments, that's left to the discretion of the poster. If the thread was already considered "finished" and obsolete, they shouldn't post there; if they post only to respond to a member who may not even come on the site anymore, they shouldn't post.

We can't really define that too well in a written statement, so this falls under the general rule of everything: Don't be stupid."

68-i honestly dnt care. And plz dont tell me wat is a correct term for a word. I go by thread death. And to b honest what is the big deal anyway. I mean so what if people duplicate a thread. Some people dont know if the thread is made. And dont tell me they can just check out the other pages or the sub pages and all that bs. Besides u dont kno how the thread will turn out. I m sorry to say this and i kno u are probably tired of hearing it and think it is an excuse. Be leniate to the newbies, some kf them dont know how to navigate through this website. So u have to learn to b patient with them. At least tell them in a calm manner tht there is a thread, instead of going all cap lock on them(which in my opinion is a form of attacking). Sorry if this is mean in ur eyes but i am tired of this. Every thread tht is double i see a post from u telling them off and i am getting tired of seeing it. If u have a prblem then go onto the chatroom and we can talk it out and maybe come up with a solution.

To the part where you said "So what if a thread is duplicate", you're probably new to the internet huh. Or just stayed in Facebook, or Gaia or some other place that doesn't very much care about this problem. As I have said in the posts above, duplicate thread is a damn problem for all forums, all across the internet. It's much more serious here because the only person who can delete a thread is the admin. All of the threads would keep on piling up. They will all be the same name. Do you know that each page of each board holds only 10 threads to be seen by the public at any given time? So you're forced to use the View All Threads to see the other rest of the threads in the board, but no one does that.

http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/120/Duplicate-Threads-why-7101006/1

Here's a thread from another forum facing this problem. Hell, just google duplicate threads and you'll see, it's a pandemic for all sites. That's why it's serious, and that's why the admin Reltair had to actually put up a Welcome sign and also put in "Don't make duplicate threads". If it wasn't serious or wasn't a big deal, then there wouldn't be a need to do such a damn thing, now would there.

And it only takes a 3rd grade brain to know where a thread goes and to look for it in its respective board, or if it's in two or more boards, check in the other possible boards. It only takes a second of your time to check. Oh but your excuse is probably "They have a life." Well, if that is your excuse, then I say to you, if they have a life, why aren't they actually living it instead of being on a forum like ours? Or just on the internet in general, huh.

No, I will not be lenient to newbies, because we've laid out everything to prevent shit like this, and then they go ahead and ignore it. I mean, I've seen other newbies actually being able to use their brains and navigate this site, so why should it be any different for the ones having trouble? Oh that's right, because they aren't putting any effort to going around and shit. They've forgone all common sense and expect us to baby them because they can't figure out how to click.

And no, I am not a caps lock type of guy, unless I'm showing an example of an ignorant person not being able to post on the forum.

And no, this isn't mean. This is FAR from mean. I've seen meaner.

73 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2012-01-29 20:46 ID:l+O29Lru [Del]

I knew I forgot to add something about the caps lock. If caps lock is a form of attacking, what do you say about the people who caps lock all day erry day, but never have they said an ounce of cussing, nor have they shown any hostility whatsoever?

I myself don't like caps lock, but how is caps lock a form of attacking? That's being stereotypical, in my opinion, just placing caps lock as "Whoops, he caps lock, he's just attacking me and being a troll" which is definitely not the case.

Listen don't u even insult me the way u just did. don't think tht I am some third grade person or have a mind like one. No I am not new to the internet yes I am a facebook user and I have a gai account. There is no law against it. I have been on more then one site wit forum and rp threads. Like hexrpg.com, deviantart.com, and I have seen duplicate threads or groups and no one has a problem so if u are gonna get on about tht duplicate threads are a epidemic all over the web then u r sorely mistaken my friend.
And about the cap locks. Yes it is a form of attack. U may not see it but I do. It is not just the caps tht make the attack it is also our people words their sentences that make the attack. Oh and while I am on the subject don't put words in my mouth. Because if I had a life I wouldn't be spending it talking to a self centered person like ur self. I am sorry if it sounds mean this post or reply whatever u call it. But I am sick and friggin tired of seeing postings with people complaining about double posting and how people like u treat it like it is the spawn of the devil. I thought dollars was suppost to be a group/forum where u cn meet new people tht u don't know and become friends. But I guess seeing this totally changes it. Pft, those sites don't seem like they care much about organization, now do they. Or maybe they have mods that take care of the site, and the users don't very much care what happened. Or hell, maybe those forums have the ability to "merge" threads, while our forum doesn't have such abilities.

Ren is just some other idiotic fail-of-a-troll in the first place, and no one should even bother with reading their posts, let alone replying to them.

They are the type of KID who thinks just because they are online, means you can't do or say anything to them that would make any differences to them in their already fucking lousy life. They don't CARE about our rules, because this isn't a real life situation. They can say what they want, and if we do anything, no harm done to them.

Reason why we have trolls, is because of this very reason.

Well, here's something I noticed.

A nice side effect to the tactic people here normally use, that is, being stern right off the bat when people make mistakes or voice ignorance, is it drives away people that would've never contributed or survived in the first place.

I like this.

People appear to like her, or at least don't dislike her nearly as much as you. My point is, ren, you haven't been judged on the websites you attend, you've been judged on the level of intelligence that you've shown, and the drama that you display.

Hahahahaha tht is funny. Hehehehehehehe but here a suggestion to ur problem make the view all threads a different color. Because I just noticed tht this site is to monotone(look it up if u don't kno wht it means, it is a graphic design term). People will ovedr look minor details if everything isblack white and grey. Try it out. Just a suggestion.
Oh and number86 u shouldn't judge people by intelligence cause it shows how much of an hypocrite u r. Same goes for everyone tht judges people. Oh and the name is a username to my deviantart page. Go and check it out if ya want. I got tons of artwork. Ciao

>>89 "u shouldn't judge people by intelligence cause it shows how much of an hypocrite u r"
Does it know what hypocrite means?

Monochrome is a style choice by the webpage designer, if everything that should be noticed on this site had its own colour it would turn out quite gaudy. I'm not sure if your point is to completely redo the colouring of the site or that one link, if it was the one link I suppose it wouldn't look bad.

91 Name: Megaoblivian11 : 2012-01-30 18:17 ID:DPv6rvkz [Del]

Oh i kno wht hypocrite means dnt worry. I mean i should kno wht it means i am graduating highschool in a few months lol. And yeah i mean just change the color of tht link and everything should be fine. Personall from a graphic designer poit of view this site layout is perfect. It fits how the site looked like in the anime. Just add a lil cor not alot but just a lil.

Holy fuck.
My eyes, they bleed.

Dude, learn to type and/or write in English. This shit is painful to read. Nobody is going to give a shit about what you have to say unless you type it properly; otherwise, it's safe to assume you're an idiot. Whatever an idiot has to say isn't worth damaging our minds by trying to translate it from Fuckian to English.

Therefore, it's fine for anyone to blatantly ignore the content. If you want someone to give a crap about what you have to say, type properly.

so this is more of a question than a suggestion. i have noticed that every thread i make has a "copy" or the topic has alread been disscussed. I compleatly understand the point of avoid making multiple threads on the same topic (keeps the website "clean") but i cant help but feel discourged to share any ideas. threads could have been made years ago and i am expected to post my idea on that thread? why not simply make a new one?

we get new members everyday, do we not? these members have ideas that may have been disscused when the group first started. though it is possible to scroll down the "view all threads" list to find the topic, do you think starting a new thread would be better?

i dont mean to say that every one can simply start a new thread when they want. that would be terriable and the site would be unorganized. i am only suggestion acceptions when a thread has not been active for long periods of time.

A. There is no leader. There is an admin. There IS a distinct difference between these two, therefore do not refer to him as a leader.
B. The admin generally deletes threads that have been saged in no particular pattern. There is no thread limit, but by deleting the senseless saged threads it makes it easier to find topics of actual relevance. It doesn't have much to do with over-occupying space so much as reducing clutter and streamlining the BBS.

I knew there was something odd about my name having a space and my trip being different in >>134.

I say we could include tags, much like instagram. I know other sites use it too, but I can't think of any at the top of my head.

Here's how it'll work. When a new thread is made, there'll be a box that says "Tags:" beside it. The thread creator can add tags that they see appropriate to the thread following a hashtag.

Example. I'm making a new thread for my "Wanna Plat a Little Game" series. Let's say I was doing the word ladder thread. In the tag box I could type this:

#word ladder #forum game #word game

In the view all threads page, there can be a small space that contains the tags. That way if someone's looking for a thread they can search the hastags too. I find problems looking for dupes because the Title isn't specific enough. I'll look it up, make the thread, and find out I made a dupe because the title didn't actually say what the thread was.

On the other hand. I kind of like the way the view all threads page works and don't want to change it. I'm sure some of you agree. There's always the option in implement >>143 this idea into mine. The search bar can dig through the tags that way the search for dupes it more effective. If someone wants to find a specific thread and knows the name of it, they can still Ctrl+f the name if they so choose. On top of this, you don't have to add the tags to the view all threads page.

Maybe if people stopped making double threads, in Music mostly, we wouldn't have this problem.

I'm sick and tired of threads saying shit like, "Pop and Rock" or "Rap and Dubstep." They are two separate threads, so put each one in their right place. Its like, it's sort of a duplicate, because there's a thread for one, but then not because there isn't a thread for the other. New rule. You may not combine two topics into one. Fuck off.
