Events Calendar (125)

1 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-11 16:49 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

An events calendar for things like the Blood Drive, meetings, and other things that the Dollars want to organize properly might be a good idea.

2 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-11 16:51 ID:AV3Nc0Kp [Del]

http://dollars-bbs.org/suggestions/res/1315555774.html

Thread also includes birthdays too. Tried google, but it failed. Any other ideas of an online calendar that everyone can edit?

3 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-11 22:02 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

http://www.calendarwiz.com/online-web-calendar.php maybe?

4 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-11 22:05 ID:AV3Nc0Kp [Del]

Purchase? Hm. Dunno if want, since Reltair will have to pay for it. And, I'd think he has enough things to pay on his hands. Unless we were to all chip in. And even then, it'd still be a bit hard. But hey, I'm all for it if it works.

5 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-12 14:04 ID:+kXdeRTi [Del]

Sure, I'd gladly chip in some money. And if enough people are up for it, we won't even need to contribute more than a dollar each.

6 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-12 18:33 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

Now, if lots of people are up for it, the next question is how to chip in? Donate button? Or something?

7 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-12 20:00 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

I guess a donate button connected to PayPal or something would work. Sending in cash seems a bit ridiculous, so yeah we should try that. With a bar above it that says how much we need to go to meet our goal or something.

8 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-12 20:11 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

>>7 Well, I feel like I emailed Reltair with complaints and shit, so someone else email him about the calendar and donate button idea.

9 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-12 20:12 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

Also, I wanna know what happens if you fail to meet the deadline. Does the calendar go poof and all the info is lost? Or does it go poof unless we pay it and then all the shit comes back? Or what? I'm new to this whole thing shit whatever.

10 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-12 20:13 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

Should I just send a link to this thread? Seems easier lol

11 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-12 20:17 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

>>10 lol Sure, whatever floats your boat.

12 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-12 20:18 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

I honestly don't know. I've never used it. I just googled "Online Calendar" and that seemed like the most legit site. But if all the info goes poof forever, then it would be wise to make a backup copy of the calendar once a month on an admin-owned free calendar so we don't have to start from scratch... I wonder if data transfer is even possible from that site.

13 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-12 20:21 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

>>12 Yeah. That's the problem with this type of paying shit. Maybe I'll get off my lazy ass and do some googling myself. But then again. /effort/. I do enough just moderating here. lol.

14 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-12 20:24 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

I just emailed the link to the admin email address to the right. So hopefully he checks the thread and does some research as well.

15 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-13 23:29 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

Haven't gotten a response... Ah well, I can't really do much more for this idea without the Admin approval.

16 Name: Phantom : 2011-09-15 04:11 ID:JqTQ4pB8 [Del]

I know that we already have a webs.com website.

www.do11ars.webs.com

webs.com has a free calendar function that Reltair could put up for events. Of course he may not want to do the work of setting up and updating the calender. From my experiences on my own webs.com website the calender is easy to use but sometime webs.com has server issues and you have a hard time changing things.

18 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-22 23:20 ID:ALg21rpf [Del]

Oh yeah, any word from Reltair about this yet? I haven't gotten a response from either of two emails I sent (not sure if they were put into a spam folder automatically, if they were just ignored, or if he's just too busy with everyone else's questions etc.)

19 Name: *insertnamehere*!!mhJDjCwh : 2011-09-22 23:27 ID:vUZMBaZS [Del]

Most likely considering, but no time to respond, busy with life/our assholes on BBS/other people's complaints/etc.

20 Name: Umbra Serpens : 2011-09-22 23:31 ID:ALg21rpf [Del]

Makes sense. Not too much of a hassle to wait for him to get around to it, so I'll just keep busy with other things in the forums lol

>>24 it happens...

Anyone else have any ideas on this?

27 Name: hollowspecter !GOqGPSCnqs : 2011-11-04 01:25 ID:JDWGw14z [Del]

Its really not easy... Do we want to have it edited by everyone, or just some moderators? Either way, if google calendar does not work, we could use some detours with google docs, setting up a text or table file as a calendar for each month and editing the stuff in it.
Some moderators could take care of editing the people and events in there, and everybody else could have a look into it. Its cheap, and a not very professional way, but at least we dont have to pay for it, right?

28 Name: Umbra Serpens !T1rQ1UNnww : 2011-11-04 09:15 ID:+kXdeRTi [Del]

>>27, this way is free, but overcomplicated. The method mentioned above, a paid service, costs money, but is simpler. In either case, I would recommend a select few moderators, with @dollars-bbs.com emails (so that people can email suggested events). This limits the amount of editing members, and so prevents dozens of the same event being posted at a time. Thoughts?

29 Name: Crin Matakay : 2011-11-04 22:01 ID:x26dKrKb [Del]

>>28 That makes the most sense. We dont want everyone to be able to mess with the calender, everything would just get jumbled up. But just have some select people who can edit it based on communicating with the members of The Dollars and their set events, would make operating events alot simpler.

30 Name: hollowspecter !GOqGPSCnqs : 2011-11-04 22:50 ID:JDWGw14z [Del]

Mh, ... lets find an easy AND cheap/free way to do this! I have several servers, or maybe if the Admin collabrorates, we could use an Open Source Calendar System, bring it on a server, and do it like this.

31 Name: Umbra Serpens !T1rQ1UNnww : 2011-11-04 23:06 ID:bLrT8qAB [Del]

>>30 So email Reltair a link to this thread, followed by your proposal on how to create a calendar system. I hope I can help contribute more to the concept, and look forward to seeing a link for it on the Dollars-BBS! Perhaps we can recommend some specific candidates for moderators, or have Reltair create a poll for voting on the main page or something (Choose your top 5 candidates), etc. Anyway, these are just a few thoughts of mine, and I hope they are taken into consideration by everyone involved in the project.

32 Name: hollowspecter !GOqGPSCnqs : 2011-11-05 00:11 ID:JDWGw14z [Del]

Yea, I think I will do this (tomorrow *too lazy*). I think the easiest way would be to have the admin just pick someone he trusts... But its really not easy.. mhh... But first I gotta check out Relatirs opinion first anyways, haha

42 Name: Ayanavi : 2011-11-10 18:10 ID:0wXTZ1At [Del]

Don't mind Kabuto... He's got no idea what he's talking about. The long and short of it is that bumping doesn't cause the site to lag. It will cause the thread to take longer to load when fully opened, but that's simply because there are more replies to load.

People who don't understand the subject would be best served to listen and learn, perhaps ask questions, before submitting their baseless dribble.

+Bump+ \o/ Hey, anyone who still thinks this is a good idea! Some previously mentioned concepts for how to make a functional calendar are listed in the comments, feel free to suggest more useful ideas! And hopefully, one of these days, we'll have something that we can actually present to Reltair as a valid idea.

51 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2011-11-26 14:31 ID:+fONR0sE [Del]

Actually, my e-mail for the Dollars is connected to google, where you can use google calendar. It's a little cluttered when you put everything together, but it would still work, right?

52 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2011-11-26 14:35 ID:+fONR0sE [Del]

>>51 I checked and you can make it public. The only problem is that it will be public everywhere, even to those who aren't in the Dollars... Not sure if that's okay or not.

53 Name: Umbra Serpens !T1rQ1UNnww : 2011-11-26 14:39 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

>>51 Google Calenders has been discussed before, and I believe the consensus was "no". Reasons being that if Google got hacked, or shut down would we have a back up, or would we have to start over? And if it got hacked, as it seems to have a tendency to do, all of our Google accounts could be compromised. In addition to that is what you said, it is cluttered. Also, for the spreadsheet, it'd be too easy for someone to not only add their own stuff, but for trolls to delete existing stuff from other members.

I agree! I'm running the blood drive at my school this year and if there are others Dollars at my school then I can encourage them to participate via the calendar~
But otherwise, having a set time/date/location for Dollars events on the site would help the events go smoother. I'd love to meet other Dollars at them.

75 Name: sleepology : 2011-12-12 14:02 ID:H3wTedVL [Del]

Use google docs but make a spreqdsheet (ifpossible), turn it into a fancy calender, and have it eventually be a link somewhere on the site

76 Name: Fatality : 2011-12-12 14:14 ID:Nmqihoih [Del]

I like the idea of an events calender but I don't think it should be public might I suggest using our texting and emailing list to send out the calender to everyone so we don't get unwelcome guests and visitors and I also have a question is this calender going to be for dollars globally or not because if its for meetups and things I personally think that local dollars should have a didderby calender for that with detailed info etc. But it can be written SS a reminder on the calender everyone receives^:^

77 Name: sleepology : 2011-12-12 14:19 ID:H3wTedVL [Del]

Or we could just make an editable one on the site itself

78 Name: Umbra Serpens !T1rQ1UNnww : 2011-12-12 14:23 ID:RGn9p0R6 [Del]

>>74 Of course >.>
>>75 Avoiding Google because they're too easily hacked, and too easily messed with by trolls.
>>76 It's not public, any Dollar on this site would be able to get to it. It'd be global, and it's not just for meetups, it's for events like the Blood Drive. And the chances of us using the emailing and texting lists for the information delivery are unlikely, as it will probably be posted on Main if and when we come to a reasonable conclusion as to how to go about implementing the calendar.

Can we just stick with a google calendar for major events?

I don't see what's wrong with it anymore. Sure, it can be hacked into, but the world wouldn't end; it's not like we're doing something overly secret that nobody else can know about. It would suck if something got editted or deleted, but we would have all the dates on BBS anyway.

84 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-02-22 14:17 ID:shCosjQt [Del]

Alright, screw it. Maybe Barabi is right, and we should use Google. Though, I'm not sure if it has a limit to how many editors you can have. Worth a shot. I'm really busy lately, though, so can Barabi, or someone else make a decent one? To share it with me so I can help work on it in my free time, here's my email for google docs: christian@dotme.com

Google would most likely be the great way to go. Yes the site might get hacked every now and then but your able to download a copy also is easy to access. You can set it in private to were you need a link, ect.
The only problem I could see is someone with the ability to edit the calendar being an idiot well being an idiot. So we'll most like have to set up a group of people who can edit it, instead of everyone. I can make one around 2:30 cen. Time, unless someone already has.

>>101 Red is events, and I think blue should be birthdays. Purple for deadlines like the end of a donation or the end of a vote period for something.

We could make a Forumer site for the Dollars, and use one of those calendars.
Sounds like a pain just for a calendar, though.

How'd Google fail?

The calender seems to work. Now all it needs is, you know, events...

Suggestion: Could we have an Events subboard under Main?

Events Calendar: https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=3f41cib8ors30ai4ptf4qd7osk%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Chicago

I feel this should be a link up top...either under 'Links' or in its own tab.

...and I just realized it's not editable by any members that haven't been added

This would really help with organization and have a much bigger profound effect with missions. But it would be much more efficient if it was connected to Main, as of now, we have to sorta dig for it. Great Idea though!

I think this is a really good idea!!! ;) we must make this happen!
