Part of this is also your age I think. I think a lot of middle, highschool kids especially tend to have big egos and think very highly of themselves. Not a knock on you, but it comes with the territory of being younger and feeling like the center of the world haha (my experience, anyways).
What <i>really</i> helps open me up to <i>truly</i> caring for others, as well as crushing my ego, is prayer, Church attendance, fasting, and spiritual reading, especially reading about the lives of the saints.
Try attending an Orthodox Church and look into the mindset a bit. It's been one of the only things to truly begin to humble me. Very enriching experience! Also a great way to begin to build connections. Many Churches have a "Coffee Hour" with food that you can stay after and eat. Good opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and approach people to sit by them :)
