I know, I know - we have 19 of these threads already. But what if...what if we could just have one? One ring to ru- one thread to cover the soundtracks (including opening and closing credits) to our favourite anime?

This is it - discuss you personal favourite openings, endings or even just the little jingles they have between halves of the episode (Gurren Lagann) - and DO NOT make more of these damned things...jeez

For me Im a big fan of Cowboy Bebop (an obvious choice) because of Yoko Kanno's fantastic western, jazz and blues compositions. The intro is fantastic and iconic on its own but the OST is amazing - perfectly fitting for the series (which wouldnt be the same for me without it). This is something Shinichiro Watanabe is fantastic at - his work with music orientation and perfectly fitting soundtrack in Samurai Champloo is also notable for this! With Nujabes and Forces of Nature providing some amazing instrumental tracks - somewhat fitting for an Edo era samurai anime...

Besides Watanabes genius in his work I think the Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood OP1 is fantastic, SAO 1&2 are great, Evangel- just kidding (although the ending renditions of Fly Me To The Moon are great), K-ON OP1, Gurren Lagann (fight the power!), Naruto Shippuden had some great themes and OP, ANYTHING Studio Ghibli (especially Joe Hisiashi's work) but worth mentioning is Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Nausica Valley of the Wind and Howl's Moving Castle.

I'll probably add more as time goes on but theyre the ones I can think of off the top of my head :)

Besides the obvious FLCL/the pillows, the last (and really only) complete soundtrack that truly grabbed me was from the Mobile Suit Gundam UNICORN OVA. Hot damn does Hiroyuki Sawano know how to compose some good shit.

Thank you for this, Bulma. Gotta say I'm a little skeptical for this being a catch-all anime music thread as I feel like OPs and EDs are inherently different enough in form than a full soundtrack that they could warrant still being their own thread, but fuck it, gotta clean this board up somehow.

I rarely listen to OSTs of any medium outside their actual work but the two huge anime outliers for me are The Pillows' FLCL No. 3 and Yoko Kanno's Zankyou no Terror OST. I dig nearly all of Kanno's stuff, her and The Seatbelts' Cowboy Bebop material included of course, but there's something about that ethereal Sigur Rós-y ZnT OST that just stands out so much for me. It also flows and functions fantastically as a concise album despite its occasional genre-hopping.

>>2 >>3 It seems I will have to watch this series (FLCL?)

I forgot to mention the epic 'shounen style' (yes thats a genre...) themes in Fairy Tale. Some heartbreaking sad melodies in there, as well as epic battle tunes!

Hmm, in regards to OSTs, I'd have to agree on SAO being excellent. I adore ANYTHING from the movie Wolf Children (and it's an amazing movie in general). Spice and Wolf, Noragami, Dangan Ronpa, and Durarara have pretty great music as well. Right now, my favorite OP is Flyers from Death Parade because it's too catchy for its own good.

>>4 Considering FLCL is only a 6 episode OVA, you've got nothing to lose, and (as Yata and I have harped on about) the music is top notch.

I guess I also could have also mentioned Kids on the Slope - it too has amazing music, but what else would you expect from Yoko Kanno? Most of the songs are covers or rearrangements of jazz standards, with specific callouts to certain seminal albums and artists of the genre.

The entire series is a love letter to jazz.

I feel like I'm the only one for which the FLCL soundtrack didn't really stand out that much. Might've been because the "plot" was too fucking bonkers for me to notice anything else.

I liked the soundtracks for those Key anime's, particularly Angel Beats. Jun Maeda is basically an amazing musician.

This. The Kids on the Slope OST is great for what it is. Love the renditions of "Moanin'" and that one medley towards the end.

Actually spin its soundtrack on its own sometime. Or listen to like any golden era (late 90s/early early 2000s) Pillows. I do think they fit perfectly for FLCL, but more importantly, their stuff is just really consistent, catchy rock, and I love me some of that.

I watched Kids On The Slope in succession during a day off work, what a heart warming and well written series. FANTASTIC soundtrack, Kanno is a genius - works terrifically well with Shinichiro Watanabe (who I see as the MASTERMIND of incorporating musical themes into anime)

Here's a link to the official soundtrack if anyone's interested.

This may be a bit of a cop out but I think that Interstella 5555 has one of my favorite soundtracks

I think the OST from Samurai Champloo is awesome. Nujabes was a master! Anyone agree or disagree?
