This is hardly one of my best written OP's, but fuck it, this band needs a thread and I need some sleep. Also, never before have I been so proud to be from Melbourne.

Discography (i.e listen here):
Portal of I
Citadel

Ne Obliviscaris is an Australian progressive extreme metal band that formed in... fuck, 2003. I don't know whether to be surprised or not given the quality of their music, but shit, that would mean the band was together for 9 years before releasing their first album. 12, if you count years before they actually made a name for themselves in the metal world.

*ahem*

Yes. Progressive extreme metal. Any pompous, overly concerned, Wikipedia-editing metal elitist/genre-obsessed music lover would go on to explain how the band defies genre with their blend of black, thrash, death, and "melodic metal" (yeah, I don't know) with classical, jazz, avant-garde and flamenco. But obviously I am above that, ahehehehehyeah. Personally, I think that the best way to describe a band is to compare them to other bands, and so I'd say that their sound is something like if BTBAM suddenly decided that they wanted to be Agalloch instead. Also they have a violinist.

For fans of extreme metal, I cannot recommend this band enough. The band manages to capture, as other great bands such a Opeth and Agalloch have, a beautiful mix of calm, emotive acoustic sections (somewhat more gothic and dramatic in this case due to the inclusion of a violinist in the bands lineup) sandwiched in between violent floods of chaotic blast-beats and subgenre-blurring riffage. Every musician in the band is equally brilliant, and all, including the bassist, get their chance to shine in the bands lengthy compositions.

Unknown and under-active for far too long, the band released their debut album, Portal of I, back in 2012, which was rightly critically acclaimed and gained them something of a cult following. It also probably resulted in their signing with Season of Mist Record, becoming label-mates with the likes of metal giants Gorguts, Cynic and Mayhem. Their 2nd and latest studio album, Citadel, was released in November 2014, after which they announced their first world tour, and proved to be their breakout album, if such a thing can really exist in metal. At least, I’d never heard of this band before Citadel, and it was an album that I was seeing everywhere over the internet.

Also, they’re from Melbourne. I live in Melbourne. Did I mention that yet?

Sputnik seemed to really like Citadel, but I'm not huge on some of the more harsh metal out there so I never checked them out. I think you have a relative grasp on my taste, so what should I check out to try and get into these guys?

Good thread, m8.

>>2 Thanks dude.

Well, their style is pretty firmly rooted in extreme metal, so your tolerance for screams and non-stop metal riffs will be a huge factor in how much you like the band. Their songs also usually lack any kind of discernible structure, opting for a more progressive BTBAM feel, so it's more like they're trying to tale you on this epic musical journey with each track.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that you're into a lot of atmospheric post rock-y shit, so you actually might dig some of this. If you like, give the track "Forget Not" a listen, and if you like it just check out Portal of I.

The whole first half of that song reminded me a lot of sgt.'s violin-led prog stuff, which is never a bad thing.

It was a nice track. I don't listen to metal too often so it has to really impress me for me to come back to it, and I think these guys' stuff could do that with time. I'll give their work more listens in the near future. /o/

>>4 They are a bit of a grower, and I do hope you warm up to them in future.

Yeah, I was pretty interested in sgt. after reading your thread a few times, but I couldn't find any of their stuff in a collected discog so I gave up. I guess youtube'll do for now.

I hate to be bumping my one thread so soon, but a pretty well-connected friend of mine, also my lead guitarist, has been always been pretty vocal about the fact that the place where we usually book our studio jam sessions is, in fact, the same place that Ne Obliviscaris does.

And so he found out from the guys when their next one is, and booked us one in the same timeslot. I don't know if we're gonna actually meet them, or stand outside their door and listen to them jam, but either way, my lead guitarist is a fucking legend!

Time to buy a copy of Citadel.

Dude, that's badass. I hope nothing unexpectedly comes up to change that.
