I hasn't made a thread on here in fucking ages. But, I've been on a 90's rock kick for some time now, and this band has quickly become one of my favourites. I'm honestly a little surprised that this thread hasn't already been made, and so, here it is.

The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois, created in 1988. Formed by frontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, lead guitar) and James Iha (rhythm guitar), the band has included Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar), Melissa Auf der Maur (bass guitar), and currently includes Mike Byrne (drums), Nicole Fiorentino (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Jeff Schroeder (rhythm guitar) among its membership.

Disavowing the musical punk rock roots of many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound which while adhering to a punk influenced philosophy in terms of musical delivery, contains elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazing, and electronica in later recordings. Corgan is the group's primary songwriter—his grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's albums and songs, which have been described as "anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land".

The bands discography is as follows:

The Original Pumpkins:
1991 - Gish
1993 - Siamese Dream
1995 - Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness (Epicness)
1998 - Adore
2000 - Machina - The Machines of God
2000 - Machine II - The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music

Post-Breakup/Reform Pumpkins:
2007 - Zeigeist (I hated it. -_-)
2009 - Teargarden by Kaleidoscope (Yep, this was much better)
2012 - Oceania (Return to awesomeness)

Nice thread, buddy.
Never really got into these guys but I'm due to come around eventually, especially with their genre variance and all.

>>4 With this band, it's hard to direct you to a specific album to start with because they're all so different, but the one everyone seems to love is Siamese Dream. However, in my opinion, a better place to start would be Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, mostly because there's more on it and it just is a lot better - but on the other hand its harder to listen to much due to its supposed "scope" and its length.
My personal favourite is Gish, but nobody seems to agree with me on that one.

Adore is good and the Machina albums are pretty much the same. Then there's Zeitgeist, which I am not fond of, although I suppose it does work as a straight-up rock record. Teagarden by Kaleidoscope is good, but (in too many ways) scattered, but Oceania is actually pretty cool.

Oh, and since I'm on the topic...

>>2 favourite album?

I figured I would start with either MC&tIS or Siamese Dream since they're the two held in the highest regard.

Come to think of it, I think my cousin is a Smashing Pumpkins fan. Maybe I'll have him burn me some discs. /o/

>>5 My first album was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Loving such gems as Tonight, Tonight, Jellybelly, Zero Bullet With Butterfly Wing, 1979 and much more.
I've always wanted to own this album, and now that I'm reemployed, I can finally get that Deluxe Edition LP box set I've been wanting for so fucking long.

I also very much enjoyed Siamese Dream, enjoying such songs as, Cherub Rock, Quiet, Today, Disarm, Geek U.S.A, Spaceboy, Luna
A friend of mine actually own this one on vinyl.
Over all I really do love and respect this band, and I really wish I could see them live.
I don't really keep a top 10 list of my favorite bands, but If I did I'd put them up their for sure.

This band may just be my all time favourite, or at least that's how I feel right now. I feel like this just needs to be discussed a bit more.

So bump.

I stole this whole thread from Wikipedia.

Also, as of about 30 minutes ago, I'm seeing these guys next Monday. Literally the day after Soundwave.

I am so fucking excited. I know that that doesn't really sound excited, but my mind is so giddy from the excitement that I find it hard to put into words how fucking excited I am.

Irony.

Okay. I saw The Smashing Pumpkins, or whatever's passing for The Smashing Pumpkins, on Monday night. The band featured Billy Corgan (duh) on guitar/vocal, Jeff Schroeder on guitar, Brad Wilk (of RATM fame) on drums and Mark Stoermer (The Killers) on bass. Opening for them was Gerard Way of MCR, who wasn't bad but got an annoyingly long set because the other opener, One OK Rock, didn't show.

Corgan was amazing. They started off strong with Cherub Rock, then fucking 1979, then they got onto some new shit with Being Beige. The setlist was a perfect mix of old and new, which I was glad of, coz I was convinced Corgan was gonna insist on soley playing Monument to an Elegy. Before the night was done, though, we also heard Disarm, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Tonight, Tonight, Adore, and Heavy Metal Machine, sandwiched in between Monuments to an Elegy tracks and a few extended jams. The band was perfect the whole way through, and Corgan actually looked pretty pleased with himself, which I didn't really expect. Not much of a crowd pleaser, but a fucking musical God nonetheless.
Jeff Schroeder, the only other permanent member atm, really impressed me, taking on most of the lead work. His style perfectly compliments Corgan's, although knowing him I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote those guitar lines.

And that's it. Best fucking night of my life.

Picked up Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie on CD a few days ago. I almost forgot how fucking good this band was. I never really appreciated it much before, but when the Smashing Pumpkins decide they want to be heavy, it's truly magical.
