The title says it all. I see a couple threads here and there of "Me and some friends wanna start a band" but nothing ever seems to come of it. What this thread is for is basically, if you have a song you wrote that you wanna share, throw it in here. If it picks up enough to the point where a separate location for discussion of your music alone seems nice, then you could make a new thread. I just think it'd be better to consolidate all those small posts to one thread.

Plus, I wanted to post my music to you guys. >.>

http://soundcloud.com/faithuntilthefall

I've been playing and writing music for a long time now. Unfortunately I don't have a decent recording setup yet, so I only have programmed music to post. I kinda just write whatever I feel like, mainly guitar driven but not confined to any one genre. Feedback is appreciated.

And I swear I went through the board twice and saw nothing like this. If by some twist of fate this thread is a dupe I deserve every ounce of ridicule.

I support this thread fully.

Not big into electronic music, but I enjoyed "Forfieture" for what it's worth. I know it takes a lot of work to make that stuff, it's just not my type of music. Good job. As a fellow guitarist, I'm interested to hear what you write as far as that goes. I know I have a few off-take demos floating around of my work. If I can find em again, I'll link em' here.

If this is a duplicate, chances are this is the more informed one by a long shot. I'm all for keeping this thread.

Ah, here's a demo I'm willing to share.
http://vocaroo.com/i/s1d7cNCsZUBC

I have a solo project that I work under tentatively as The Heist Revenge. My area's not exactly big on music, so finding other musicians has been tough (in other words, I haven't yet) and it's stayed a one-man hobby so far. I sing and play guitar, and have a drumset (which I have mixed results with) and no particularly outstanding recording software other than Garageband, so I haven't gotten around to much recording as of yet.

This winter, I tell ya. I will get this shit recorded eventually.

4 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2012-11-14 20:16 ID:Rs2r115N [Del]

Thanks for the support. :)

Both of the tracks on there were actually written for guitar initially, I just haven't been able to record it. I bought myself a USB interface and a condenser mic, but realized when I went to actually try and record a track that I don't have any xlr cables. >.>

I have some mp3s of other stuff I wrote a few years ago, but the quality is atrocious and the songs aren't that great. I was really happy with how Forfeiture turned out. What's on the page is actually a midi file sequenced in Guitar Pro, then converted to a pseudo NES sound.

5 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2012-11-14 20:26 ID:Rs2r115N [Del]

>>3 You ninja'd me with that. I really enjoyed that recording. Quality was meh but I can look past that. Some easy listening there. I imagine with some nice reverb and a bit of delay I could listen to something like that for hours.

I have my own lyrics, but I'm not a very good, great singer cuz my voice was a little loud from the neighbors. This one called: Die From Me.

The writings on the wall
My crimson touch is going no where
And I'll hang on every words your say
And sink my eyes into this nightmare.

Whoa, oh, oh, oh
I'm screaming loud
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Can you hear me?

I scream for you
Forever I will lie awake
They will Die From Me
I've seen the lies
I've giving you their heart to break
They will Die From Me.

When I feel your body crawl
Impale flesh for their devotion
True pain was all you ever made
Love would be will never our last emotion.

Whoa, oh, oh, oh
I'm screaming loud
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Can you hear me?

I scream for you
Forever I will lie awake
They will Die From Me
I've seen the lies
I've giving you their heart to break
They will Die From Me.

With every breath I'll feel brand new
Falling in love as I will sing from you till despair!

I scream for you
Forever I will lie awake
I've seen the lies
I've giving you their heart to break
They will Die From Me!

I scream for you
Forever I will lie awake
They will Die From Me
I've seen the lies
I've giving you their heart to break
They will Die From Me.

I scream for you
Forever I will lie awake
They will Die From Me
I've seen the lies
I've giving you their heart to break
They will Die From Me.

-It's a different song that I got from Black Veil Brides-Die For You. It's my favorite.

Another crappy quality rough recording of a new idea. Kinda tried to mix two demos into one, dunno if that key change sounds weird.

Decided to do a loose cover of Sigur Ros' "Untitled 1" from ( ) .
Yes, that's the album name.

I dunno, I was down and depressed tonight about a lot. Just picked the guitar and started playing and was like "wait a minute, this sounds like Untitled 1." So I tabbed it by ear, practiced it a minute, and then recorded that.

I'd certainly be an advocate in saying that the most emotional music just comes in the moment with a simple heartfelt recording like that.

So...today was a pretty lazy and aimless day. At some point I was messing around on my laptop, playing with Mixcraft. I had my headphones, using just my laptop microphone with "Montore incoming audio" turned on, so my mcrophone was going straight to my headphones (with a little lag but whatever)

I don't know what started me toying with it, but I was basically using tons of reverb and delay and then just tapping the computer in different places to make weird percussion. Then I picked up my acoustic and this little solo happened. Nothing fancy, but I was pleasantly surpirsed with the results. I usually hate my improv.

I'm digging the atmosphere of that improv.

Then again I'm a sucker for reverb'd and...I don't quite know how to describe it, but "empty and open" tracks like that. I know that's probably not a great choice of words, but it's just what comes to mind. I enjoyed that quite a bit, though.

23 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2013-01-31 20:28 ID:Rs2r115N [Del]

I can't even begin to say how much I agree with that. :D I have a tendency to go way overboard wit delay and reverb because I just love them so much. As far as words to describe the sound..."Spacious" or "Ambient" are the two words I most often use for that kinda stuff.

Also, I *finally* got around to listening to the EP you posted. It literally JUST finished as I was typing that sentence. Anyways, it was pretty good for the most part but gorram bro I LOVED Departure.

i don't have any actual music, but here's some lyrics. tell me what you think.

shut it by Dragon

Tell me with your eyes what you want,
that hole in your head won't say a thing
show me with your hands what you got
and let your fucking mouth stay shut.

It's been so long since you saw me
ages since I came out of this shell
it's time to remind you what you bargained for,
and give you the demon you fished out of hell.
Watch me move, watch me slither
feel your inhibitions wither.
Remember my voice, remember my touch.
All I want is your heart for now, and I don't think i'm asking much.

Tell me with your eyes what you want
that hole in your head won't say a thing.
Show me with your hands what you got
and let your fucking mouth stay shut.

Don’t limp, lean on me till I kick you upright.
Show me the pain i'm asking for.
I'm not your crutch, and you're not mine.
I love you, and i'm not asking for much more.
I'll dance with you till you fall down,
i'll pull your face till you smile, not frown.
I'll screw you till you morning comes,
and stay for breakfast when it's all done.

Tell me with your eyes what you want
that hole in your head won't say a thing.
Show me with your hands what you got
and let your fucking mouth stay shut.

A few very minor time goofs aside, this was pretty damn good. I liked the strings that backed up the riffs during the last minute of it. It was very intense the whole way through and it didn't stay with the same idea for too long. Good songwriting, dude.

Just curious cause you seemingly like "djenty" stuff (I know that's a controversial term but I have no better word for it tbh), have you heard Cloudkicker's stuff before? I think he'd be right up your alley.

>>38 Hey, I've been wondering, how is it that you record your drum tracks? Do you use a program or, are you actually playing that? I ask because no matter where I place the (rather shitty) iPod, or sometimes laptop mic around my kit, it always comes out as this big, loud, annoyingly sharp wall of sound.

41 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2013-03-09 00:00 ID:bOyHRxYk (Image: 1366x768 jpg, 327 kb) [Del]

>>39 Yeah. Timing goofs as a result of me being kinda sloppy on my own parts and too lazy to record it perfectly so I kinda cheated around and such. Thanks for the kind words though. Those strings at the end...I've toyed with the idea of making it an octave riff on the guitars too...it sounds really cool, but I still like the strings with those open dropB chugs.

>>40 I just have a sample file for each drum. My kit consists of 1 kick, 1 snare, hihat (open and closed), 2 crashes, 1 china, 1 ride, and 4 toms. SO all in all I have 12 individual samples. Then I just copypaste and copypaste again on every beat I want that drum to play on. I've also applied various EQ and reverb effects to give them a more brutal tone as opposed to the really dry sound the stock samples had.

I'm really a terrible drummer. I have a kit here, but never really get to play it. If I were recording actual drums they'd be waaaay less complicated. As for recording them...the only way you're gonna get a decent sound is by either buying a mic package or, if you're like my friend Greg, one good Condenser mic as an overhead.

But all in all, if you want a good recording you gotta buy the good gear. <.<

I'm probably one of the more low-budget amateurs to ask those questions to, and this will probably turn quite disjointed and rambly, but here goes. lol

I sorta explained a bit in my first post on this thread, but I record solo under the name The Heist Revenge. My reason for this is simple: I have no one to jam with here.

...it kinda sucks.

However, since I write and record everything myself, I can endlessly tweak it as much as I want in the editing stages and not feel like I'm compromising somebody's songwriting. As far as my writing process goes, what I write almost never ends up recorded. Most of what I record is based of a certain riff or motif, and once that's there I just improv over it and add layers and what have you. On my current project, I'm trying to throw in a few more structured and written tracks.

As far as recording itself goes, I record at home, and all I have to record and edit with is an outdated (working on it), version of Garageband with the built-in Mac OSX computer mic. It catches guitar quite well, especially since my amp is positioned in prime location to the computer, but I've had more troubles with my drums. It doesn't help that
a) I'm not a good drummer
b) my drumset is a jumbled and beat-up mess with different parts just bought from local garage sales
c) my mic occasionally picks up "BWBBFDJNFJNJHBFBGJFGJHKNSNJGN" instead of individual hits.
and d) I have very little idea how to properly maintain a drum kit

After fiddling with the position of the drums in relation to the comp/mic, I've got it worked out to the best it can sound right now, but on my list of things to save up for and buy are mics for the drums. My recordings certainly won't be in an audiophile's favorites, but the sound is still passable with some editing.

...of which I do a lot. Seriously. I was sitting here for a good hour and a half earlier trying to get the balance right for one of the things I was recording today. I still don't have it at my preferred sound yet.

As far as what I plan to do in the future with my music hobby, I'm really not so sure, but I'm not expecting much. I haven't played a live show since a shitty talent show gig back in 5th fucking grade, and even if I were to form a band etc, I have issues with my health that would take a terrible toll on me if I were to tour often. That's pretty much out of the picture any time soon.

In the end, I just make music because I want to. It helps that my friends and family are supportive of me and enjoy it, but even if they weren't, I'd still record it because I have ideas that want to be put to disc so I can earn the pride of knowing that I've done something. It's just who I am.

Curious to hear Chimera's story now...

47 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2013-03-10 01:31 ID:bOyHRxYk [Del]

Well...one big difference right off the bat is that I DO have people to jam with here. (Just got home from it) We're not quite a band yet, but we definitely are.

All the stuff on my soundcloud page though, that's personal projects. I don't really know how to explain my writing process as it is incredibly sporadic and inconsistent and nonsensical. I'll start writing something, get stuck, find a project file a year later and finish it. Not even kidding.

As far as my gear goes...

First off, my guitar set up. I'd take some pictures but my rig is still all packed cause I was just at a jam and I'm not quite sure how to get pictures from my phone to my comp yet but that's not important.

Guitars-

Ibanez Gio
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090719172415/ibanez/images/5/58/GRX20Z_RD.jpg

Really not sure about the model. It's lowend, was a gift. I use this one for my Drop B tuned metal stuff.

PRS SE Custom Semihollow
http://di1-1.shoppingshadow.com/images/pi/6e/71/19/118565855-260x260-0-0_prs+prs+se+custom+semi+hollow+electric+guitar+scar.jpg

Bought this one for myself and I love it. It's my main.

Also gonna be buying a Fender American Telecaster from my uncle sometime soon.

For my pedal board I run-

Boss TU3 (tuner)
MXR Custom Comp (compressor)
Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (Overdrive/optional clean boost)
TC Electronic Nova Drive (Distortion/Overdrive combo)
Dunlop DVP1 (Volume pedal)
Visual Sound Dual Tap (Delay)
Boss RV5 (Reverb)

Guitars run through that into a Tech 21 TM60 amp.

...yes I spent a lot of money.

For recording, I have an MXL Guitar Cube Condenser microphone, and my amp also has a direct out XLR. I run either of those into an M-Audio Fast Trak Pro (Nothing really that "Pro" about it) which then goes through USB into my computer.

For software I have Acoustica Mixcraft 6, which I think is fairly powerful, cheap as far as mixing software goes, ($75 for standard, $150 for "pro") and pretty user friendly.

So that's all my gear, now for recording process...

I don't really go to record until I've got a "full song" or at least a good chunk of song to demo. Then the first thing I do is get the drums sequenced, which if you look at my screenshot in my last post, you can see is a kinda tedious process. Thankfully I now have all my mixing and effects for how I like my virtual kit sounding so it's all just in sample placement from here on out. I think it's really important to have the sequenced drums done first, simply because it's a lot easier to keep things in time when you have your percussion track ready. I also have a metronome active whenever my time signatures aren't too screwed up for it.

Once my drum track's ready I'll get any sort of MIDI tracks I'm gonna use put in order. In Forfeiture the bass, keys, and the strings are just midi.

Then I just do as many takes as needed to get my guitar lines sounding good enough for me. I try to be more "real" and record each part as one runthrough instead of getting really really digital about it and faking it. Buuut sometimes I give up and cheat. Generally with how I write there are two guitars playing similar parts, with occasional harmonies, so I pan each guitar hard left and right after they're recorded.

Once I've got that done, I just try to balance out the levels to where I'm satisfied and I don't think anything is too overpowering, and a bit of a compressor effect to the whole track, then mix down to .wav file.

I hope this wasn't too rambly, but that's honestly what I just did. I rambled. I've never been too good at being succinct about these things. If there's something specific you wanted an answer too, just ask and I'll try to be a little better about not going overboard with a reply.

By the way, I am nowhere near pro at this. Google is my best friend. Any time I've had any sort of question I just screw around in my program until I get what I want or I google it.

>>42 All depends on the program. Pretty sure Mixcraft has video support, but I haven't looked into it.

48 Name: ShotaroKaneda !radhZ7oYHc : 2013-03-11 05:53 ID:+9rKaFxz [Del]

>>46 On the contrary, I think you're perhaps the best person for me to ask those questions to. I'm in a very similar position to you, really. Most of my gear is of the lowest possible-grade-without-being-total-bullshit variety, and I'm using my effing iPod to record individual tracks.

I would say I also have nobody to jam with, but that isn't technically true, but they don't take it seriously. They aren't particularly skilled, have incredibly limited musical interests and they never wanna actually write. They pretty much just pretend to be "musicians" just so that they can tell people that they are.

Also, I'm mostly a drummer, and although I haven't touched my kit in ages, I'm actually quite good. I started taking lessons when I started middle school, and so my parents decided that they'd help me out by buying me the cheapest, and probably only drum kit they could afford, for which I was still really grateful.

...and it sucked. Like really sucked. God, it was the very definition of suck. Seriously, by the time I was done with it, it was so out of shape (literally) that you could have taken a picture of it and made it a meme with the caption "fail" under it. I've since gotten a better one, but it's still kinda terrible for recording with.

>>47 A left-handed, black Ibanez Gio is the guitar that I currently own. I run it through a Roland Cube-20X amp. I got all of this fairly cheap. I'm fairly sure that this was the best sound that I could get out of my rather low budget, so all in all, it's pretty decent. My first guitar was this really cheap $120 left-handed SX piece of shit, which I'd run through an incredibly cheap, unbranded little practice amp, so yeah, I know that I could do a lot worse.

My drum kit is part Tama Rockstar, and part cheap low grade trash. I have 4 cymbals to go with it, just the standard crash, ride, and hi-hat, and also one of the hi-hat cymbals from my old kit, which, I shit you not, sounds exactly like a china cymbal. My stands are god awful, which is rather insulting to my cymbals. They give me a really loud, sharp sound that completely washes over everything else, making recording drum tracks the traditional way completely out of the question.

Umm, yes, thanks for replying, it did help me out somewhat. I might record a cover of a song (probably a very easy one) just to show you guys what I'm dealing with. I would, and do, appreciate any feedback or tips you could give me.

...and god, this makes me sound like a noob and you guys professionals. I suppose that's not too far from the truth, but still. And for the record, most of my music is actually quite good. At least I think so, and I am not easy to please.

While I would never record with vocaroo because the quality is just terrible most of the time, it's good for just jotting down an idea that you feel you might forget later. This is one of those such times. I want to share this snippet of one of the tracks I'm working on:

Also I made an official FB page for my little music project. If you guys wanna keep up with my stuff, I'll likely post more there than I will here.
So yeah, here.

>>48 "and also one of the hi-hat cymbals from my old kit, which, I shit you not, sounds exactly like a china"

I know PRECISELY what you mean. A friend of mine has a really REALLY trashy kit, and the hihat is so thin that you can invert it by gravity's strength alone. Gets the same china effect.

If I actually played my brother's kit that I have here I'd be dying for a china. I love them.

This one's called: At The End.

At The End
As you faded to the night (Whoa, oh, oh)
Who will tell the story of your life?

In the end
As my evil soul is filled
What's left to my body
Or am I just a demon?
And I fough
And with the flesh and blood I commanded an army
Through it all I have given my hell heart when there is no glory!
(You're endful life)

Chorus: At the end
As you faded to the night (Whoa, oh, oh)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa, oh)
And who will remember your last goodbye (Whoa, oh)
Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.

Born a Satanist
Though every year I wanna be unholy.
I will live again
Who we are
Isn't how we live we are more than our bodies
If I fall I will rise up to rule and relive a victory!

Chorus: At the end
As you faded to the night (Whoa, oh, oh)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa, oh)
And who will remember your last goodbye (Whoa, oh)
Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.

Chorus: At the end
As you faded to the night (Whoa, oh, oh)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa, oh)
And who will remember your last goodbye (Whoa, oh)
Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.

Who will remember THIS LAST GOODBYE (Whoa, oh)
Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.

Not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.
Not afraid
I'm not afraid to die.

Alrighty then, I've decided to finally record and upload a couple of little musical tidbits that have been for some time lying around in some of the most peripheral reaches of my mind. Most are just riffs that I wrote ages ago.

Okay, these first two are thrash riffs that I came up with a while ago. At the time, I was very obsessed with Evile. You'll hear the influence, I suppose. Also, these two riffs are supposed to be played tuned a half-step down, but I couldn't be stuffed. I also couldn't be stuffed doing more than one take, so please excuse the dirty playing, the string clicking and the minor fuck-ups. Awful, I know, but you'll get the gist of it.

Thrash Riff 1 (Intro)
(excuse the ending. I just didn't really know what to play when I got there)

Thrash Riff 2
(I sped up during the second repeat. I apologise.)

I'm honestly not sure whether or not I should keep experimenting with these riffs or if I should just scrap them. Thrash isn't quite the music I'm interested in creating right now, but I dunno, perhaps I could fit these in somewhere.

And next. This is just a random chord progression I used just to test my Phaser effect. My amp is awesome in the way that it came with built-in effects. I actually think it sounds pretty good, like as a small break in a song, maybe even a bridge or something, but it isn't really anything that I'd base a whole song around.

Simple Chord Progression

And lastly, this is the guitar track I was gonna use to record a band cover of Dammit by Blink 182. Like everything else, I recorded it in 1 take, and it's full of small fuck-ups and timing mistakes, which doesn't really matter that much anyway since it's a punk song. It's passable I suppose, but still. I'm not particularly proud of it.

Since I have to give my current laptop back to my cousin today, my Dad is officially letting me keep his old one. And so, while I was going through all of my Dad's stuff, mercilessly deleting everything that didn't interest me, I came across a folder called "Audacity Files." And amazingly, it just happened to contain my oldest attempts at recording some of my music, which I must have done when I was like, 13. Thank god my Dad doesn't know how to delete stuff.

Here

I lol'd. It makes me really appreciate just how far I've come since I was 14, back when I was much more a drummer than anything else, and when I thought that my little brother's cheap Monterey acoustic guitar was the best instrument that I'd ever get my hands on. I'm not quite sure whether the distorted guitar is actually what my first (god-awful) electric guitar sounded like, or whether this was the result of an acoustic guitar track and lots of tinkering in Audacity. Either way, it sounds awful.

I do like the acoustic guitar bit though, I think I might play with it a bit more in future. And the microphone in this laptop is a lot better than my current one. The drums actually sound coherent, so I guess it really is possible to record them the traditional way.

Bro, that was fucking beautiful.
Not gonna lie though, I was expecting a large climax since the song just kind of had that nature to it, especially in that last minute. I felt like it was building and then...it ended.

Not bad for what it is, and what it is is very nice, but there could be...I don't know...more to it? I wouldn't say it has to be like 15 minutes, but a better end to "end" would suit it well.

Good job. /o/

You should probably mark that they're originals. lol

So thoughts on those:
All of them are fine. You might wanna try to move around in your vocal range a bit. I see that your little description said most of the songs were done at night. Were you trying not to be loud vocally cause of the unfortunate people trying to sleep? lol

They would all benefit from some more range, and maybe you have them that way in your head but I can only comment on what I'm hearing. Again, none of them are bad, and they're definitely suited for this type of music, but variation is a key to keeping things interesting.

Of the 3, I liked "Hysteria" the most for what it's worth.

Looking forward to more by you. Keep at it. /o/

So I vocaroo'd one of the full songs from the album I'm writing. Just guitar and vocals since I obviously can't do more than that at the same time. The song is going to use the electric which is why I used it here instead of the better-sounding acoustic.

...and the B string on my acoustic broke late last night and I'm too lazy to fix it this morning, so ya know...

Lyrics here.
This is the only song I'm working on that's still untitled, which is hilarious cause it's otherwise done and most of the others aren't yet still have names.

Feedback appreciated, as always.

reminder: Vocaroo deletes recordings after they've sat there for a certain amount of time. If you want to download this, do so now. I'll probably upload a complete version somewhere later but if you like this one, I just want you to not put it off and then lose it.

I'm curious though, do you listen to music like this to get inspiration or does your stuff just result from fucking around? What kind of noise/experimental/ambient would you recommend for a relative newcomer to the genre?

>>118 >>118 Thank you very much man! The music I make isn't directly inspired by others music, of course I have had to listen to these genres to understand them and what not, but over all I make my own original music by experimenting around with different sounds and instruments!

I don't usually do shameless advertising on here but here I go!
I'm a DJ/Producer and one half of the electronic DJ duo Digital Youth.
We just successfully finished recording our latest set last night called "9th Grade Dreams". 9th Grade Dreams is the second part of the 9th Grade Series, With the first being "9th Grade Writing Project", which was heavily inspired by a short story I had written in my 9th grade writing class.

After and impressing performance of "9th Grade Writing Project" at the Slaughterhouse Art Gallery, were were giving the opportunity to perform at Indy Hall along with Forcefeel and Skyship.
And that's when 9th Grade Dreams was first introduced to the public.

Gotta level with you, the vocals were pretty grating to my ears, and I can tolerate quite a bit in the vocal department. Otherwise, the song was nice. The production was unhindered and clear, I liked the tones and it had a decent enough composition.

>>163 Eager to hear :D Would anybody mind if I made a thread completely for the guy I manage?

Small unsigned rapper doin' his own thing, with some pretty deep messages (but not as "ow the feels" like Immortal Technique is) in the songs. I've been trying to support and promote him, which is quite the task because he's almost as depressed as I am, but more vocal about it. Either way. With 20+ songs and an album dropping soon things should be pretty good for him. I mean, a 19 year old college student who's been rapping for over a decade? Nothing to sneeze at there, in my opinion.

I want to ask a question to you fellow musicians:

Do you ever find yourself thinking up really great concept album-like ideas and then after writing one song really easily, you're totally stumped on ideas for the rest? Or like, you have the ideas, but then you change them and there's the one track that just can't get changed but then doesn't belong with the rest?

Cause that's kind of the predicament a had with a song I wrote back in March. It was going to be the closing track as a little epilogue-thing and I ended up rewriting a bunch of the material for that would-be release which hasn't been recorded yet except for, ironically, that song. Listening to it again on my computer tonight I think it has potential if brushed up a bit.

Now I don't wanna say "expect it ______" cause knowing me, it won't be released by whatever deadline I set myself to, but I do want to get it out there and get some feedback. Just gonna redo the mixing on it a tad and change one of the lyrics which I just realized now, months later, that I messed up.

So I remembered I made a Bandcamp page a while back and there are quite a few songs on there and from a while ago that are great to laugh at and such. But I threw this together three tracks to upload just for fun, one original and two covers through some Nokia hands-free headphones on one track on Audacity ahahahaha
Two of the 'EPs' arent uploaded due to some difficulties with Bandcamp but maybe one they'll be available for human ears.
Anyway, all lo-fi emo stuff
Cavx

Actually going to have at least one proper band demo or two here soon since Ive been working with a drummer alot recently. ACTUAL MUSIC TRUST ME

Okay.
Around 6 months ago I said I was making a pv band with a friend but that plan fell through and another friend and I (drummer and a guitarist) started writing songs that sound similar to the modern UK punk movement and early NYC hardcore. Eventually a few friends were added to the line up and we became a full band.
We are yet to record the demo or cassette or EP or whatever it could and will be classified as but this will be done very shortly. The drummer and I decided on a name just 2 or 3 minutes after I asked him what we should call ourselves and without checking with the others we agreed that 'Scudge' was a good name for a band. If you dont know a 'scudge' is a rougher way of say smear and scratch and can refer to the scuffs on the Doc Martens skinhead and punks wear.
I got excited and with newly aquired knowledge of cassette layout design and dimension I set to creat insert for a future cassette that should be ready by the end of March.
I basically got a picture of Ian Curtis (Joy Division) and used that as the cover. The alternate version/variant to the cassette is the inverse colour scheme and I thought was pretty damned cool.
Its going to be out through my small time record label and merch distro I am opening up, Caved In Collective. The catalogue letters (CAV) is a play on words due to my last name. Caved In Collective/Distro should be up and running in the next two months.
Here is the insert and artwork to the release.
Stay tuned and Ill be posting a Bandcamp link so you can hear it as soon as this is finished. Download will be free obviously.

I finally recorded something successfully - yay me - but I haven't finished it and I can't today because I'm running out of daylight. Still gonna post because, well, I did spend a good three hours of my life recording this and I'm excited that it wasn't wasted time for a change.

I originally uploaded it to vocaroo, but the quality was lowered to the point where it just sounded like noise, so I hastily found a random picture and made the video and yeah.

The quality is kinda crap, and my playing is a bit sloppy at times, but overall I'm actually pretty proud of it and I think I could develop it into a full song. Let me know what you think.

So like quite a few people when I get a high fever I begin to feel quite deranged and odd, if it is really bad I get sleep paralysis and hallucination/dreams that last so so so long and that happened today at school and IO wrote this song and I'll upload the finished/recorded copy when I can get a guitar that works in my possession but here are the lyrics ahahaha I have zero ideas what was running through my head at the time (ALSO BUMP)

I stole you wallet and headed for the sea
Didn't know how to get there or what was there for me
But sometimes I fear the worlds slowly going to shit
And I cant help thinking my Father's a twit
Still wonder why I prefer people who're brunettes
And why I still drink and smoke cigarettes,
Not even old enough to pay my own bills
My life is scattered 'round my Mothers house in photographic stills

and holes in the walls

Oh, Oh, Oh
And the 'saints' came stumbling home
Drunk on love, and terrified of things unknown
They sung songs and held hands to convonce they werent alone
Oh, Oh, Oh
Safe in bed they wept and wiped their tears away
Remember me in North London? Eight months today
Cant believe I got this far with nothing to my name

What is 'happily ever after'?
A lifetime supply of Asthma inhalers?
or a mile long queue of Fords with trailers?

The holes in my mothers walls are all that will remain

>>216 That's actually really awesome. It has an interesting feel to it, and some of it conjures up some interesting imagery. And I particularly like the line "My life is scattered around my Mother's house in photographic stills."

If I could suggest one thing - the line "and I can't help thinking my Father's a twit", - I'm sure it means something meaningful to you, but to me it sounds a little like a forced rhyme, and its relative simplicity pulls me out of it a little,

Not really a suggestion, really. Just a personal observation/opinion. Otherwise I think this is really good, and I look forward to hearing it.

I've been interested in poetry and lyricism lately. Maybe I'll post some of my own.

My criticism is similar to Neige's, some of the lines seem really forced to fit into a rhyming structure. Then again, it could fit really well with the song structure, but we wouldn't know. If you think it's solid with the music accompanying it, go for it. I'd probably revise a little though.

I might post stuff again in the coming months. Gonna jam with some friends old and new in MA when I'm up there this summer. Between the 4 or 5 of us, something will come together for sure. /o/

>>218 I barely remember both posting and writing this song so if I do record it like I have mentioned I will I'll change it up a bit I think, its a bit 'obvious'. But it kind of works like that, similar to the way Barry Johnson or Wil Wagner write. I'd love to see what you can write Neige!

Im seriously excited to see what you can do Yata due to our similar taste in music. You're pretty lucky to have 4/5 musicians to jam with, the problem with starting bands where I ive has always been Im the only established guitar player and the other musicians are all drummers.....Anyway, good luck! I suggest recording any jam sessions you have on a phone or anything for something to reflect and/or look back on. That tends to help

so I covered "Oh Comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel and instead of using vocaroo out of laziness, it was an artistic decision to get the raw wall-of-noise quality and also pull the thing off in one take with no edits, like the original.

I think I did indeed pull it off. You guys tell me. /o/

>>221 I have the same prolem and yet the complete opposite; I'm a drummer who has a few guitarists, some pretty good, others lazy and annoying, but all busy or unwilling.

>>222 That was a pretty good cover, but to me, I felt that the register you were singing in wasn't particularly suited to your voice; it started to get kinda whispery at points, and I think you sounded a lot better with the higher bits of the song. Maybe it was just the recording quality, or maybe your voice is juat naturally a bit raspy and I'm an idiot. Probably a bit of each.

Still, that was impressive, especially considering that it's an 8 minute song and Jeff Mangum is a fucking god. I thought that whole last section was really well done, the really loud bit. Intense, like.

Just my opinion.

A short recording of what my "band" has been working on lately.

Never have I been happier with riffs that I didn't write myself. My lead guitarist needs to practice, though. I know that.

Lyrics:

I curtail discriminatory silence,
Weaving in and
Out of momentary spite, sins
Of wrecked discretion
Blessed. I sieve through my disguises
And clothe myself in
Pride, prepare for the enlightening
Most gentle to mankind

I'm not 100% happy with this verse, though, so many changes will likely be made later.

>>233 Thank you. ^^

>>234 Yeah, that was the part where my lead guitarist fucked up - but we were too excited by actually having recorded something good to actually do a second take. Heh.

I wrote the lead bit and had to show him how to play it, but it was hard for him since I play left-handed and upside down, where he plays normally; that part got lost in translation, so to speak. He's also been playing for only two years and I don't think he practices much. He's more driven by bouts of momentous passion and drive, so I doubt he'll voluntarily be with us for too long.

Which is fair enough, because in all honestly, he's our weakest link; he never writes anything, he plays mediocre at best, and he doesn't seem to want to listen to the same music as me and the rhythm guitarist. But since there are only 3 of us at the moment and he's pretty much the one who got us started by introducing me to my other bandmate, it'd feel like a betrayal to simply kick him out.
Assuming he sticks around, it's a problem that we'll probably have to deal with at some point down the line assuming that he doesn't get better.

Fuck it, I'm not gonna try to sell this. Here's an idea of something I'd like to do for fun. Please pile on.

Would anyone be up for doing collaborative covers?

After all, we've all got songs that we've learnt, in part or in full, that we've never really thought to do anything with, right? Well, let's do something with them.

If a few people come together to cover some random songs, we could all achieve something to be mildly proud of without the expectation that comes with being in a band. Also it should be fun.

So, uh, anyone interested?

P.S I mostly play drums. Also guitar, but mostly drums.

Speaking of covers, I did a really quick cover of the first song I ever learned, just for fun. Did it all from memory with no warmup so mistakes abound, but it was just a quick thing to test a change I was making to my drum sound. I'm really happy with what I got out of them now. I thought I'd break into the Dollars scene with something I'm passionate about. Here's a demo I put together a few months back if you'd like to experience it! We're all improvising Jazz musicians in Melbourne, Australia. Let me know what you think:

I need an opinion on a recording, so here's my, or really, my band's soundcloud. Also, please read below.

After making private all the important shit that is decidedly for band-member ears only, there remain a solo ambient piece by my rhythm guitarist, two demos (one early and one current) of a nearly completed track, and a few recordings of decidedly superfluous band jam fuckery. We found a lot of it pretty funny to be honest, though I can hardly expect the same of the rest of you. But by all means, give the bullshit a listen anyway.

The newly uploaded, and badly recorded, demo of a song we've currently dubbed "Esoteric Whirlpool Funland" is what I'm looking for opinions on at the moment, so allow me to give it some context below.

There is a bassline for the song, although due to the lack of a bassist for the recording of this demo, the recording doesn't have one, most evident in the intro where the bass was meant to come in after two bars of solo drumming. Lyrics are a work in progress, and the song has been condensed into demo size, meaning that most of the sections will be longer of shorter depending on how we see fit in future. Playing is sloppy, as we didn't really intend to be uploading this and have done so merely to keep as a progress marker and proof of work. Also the ending fizzles out at the final riff played is a combination of two previous ones, an idea that had just been proposed and therefore one that hadn't really quite fleshed out.

criticism/compliments

289 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2015-02-09 06:37 ID:rlMUo1FL [Del]

>>288 Far as complaints go, the songs are all really short, and when you rap in that slightly higher register (a la Intermission, and oh god Braindead), I find that voice kinda irritating. I hate skits about 90% of the time, and typically I didn't see the point of yours' being there, but that's really more of a personal gripe. Also, Anthem sounds a little too much like a toned down Eminem song.

Your beats are mediocre at best, and all kinda same-y, so you should definitely look to improve in that area. Lyrics are probably your strongest skill at this point, you generally have a good flow, and your wordplay is actually surprisingly clever most of the time. There were some cool nerd references and nothing made me cringe, which is always nice.

For your first project, this is pretty solid, though when you've got more music to your, I think you'll probably look back at this and cringe hard.

Oh, and my favourite track was Massachusetts. It's actually pretty good.

Sliknita - "Pieman Forest"

Me and my guitarist are doing a post-rock/stoner rock project separate from my other band. Here's the first track we ever wrote.

And by wrote, I mean we jammed it out once and liked it and it stuck.
Basically two riffs. But I'm prouder of it than anything my other band's likely to accomplish.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Esoteric Whirlpool Funland, an instrumental song me and my band wrote through most of last year and the start of this one. Really, really crappy demo. Played sloppily by me and my remaining band member, recorded badly and mixed poorly, but you can probably hear what we were going for. Maybe we even captured some of it.

But this still feels like a first step for us. I know I probably won't get any, but feedback is appreciated.

fucking christ the mix in this came out horrible but I'm out of time to keep working on it

as promised, that stupid Catcher in the Rye song.

I have never been as proud of my songwriting as I was with this.
And I have also never been as disgusted with how the actual recording came out as I am with this.

Weird feeling. Wish me luck presenting it tomorrow.

asa - choatic noise art

I've been working lots on this noise project recently, I have lots of material yet to be uploaded to this page but in time there will be new release that consists of 15 or so new tracks, clocking in at under two minutes in its entirety. It will be called 'assault'. Then eventually a series of releases will come to fruition dedicated to Evangelion, with volumes one through to three beng released in that respective order.

This is for fans of Merzbow and the Full Of Hell noise volumes.

Anyway, this is what Ive been working on recently

Here's the first official release from me and a couple of friends post-rock project Sliknita. Like everything important we've ever done, it's progress caused by frustration at a lack of progress - at some point, we had to create something tangible.

Feedback is appreciated, just don't tell me to improve my production or play more cleanly - we're working on it.

My band did another thing. Whereas last time we just recorded a live session and called it a demo, this time we just took a couple of song ideas we privately uploaded to soundcloud and tacked them on to a song we spent a short amount of time actually writing.

You'll probably be able to guess which one that is.

So, as my obsession grew to an all time high with Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as Hideaki Anno and the themes throughout his writing - I ended up piecing together this sort of 'concept album'
Using instruments, non-intruments, computer programs (both very old and new) these three pieces are my interpretation of the pain and sorrow of three female characters within Anno's work that I believe reflect characters within everyone's lives.

I wrote this a while back
The spark is fading and the flame dyin. I thought that had all the pieces but I was missing one and I thought it was you but I now know after all this heartbreakin’ it wasn't meant to be can I mend this broken heart can i fix your mistakes or are they mine is it too hard to ask if it only will last how couldn’t I see that you and me could never be you kept to your screen blended in while i was out so far that was I alone ya they say opposites attract I started to believe then I was pulled back down to earth and saw the spark is fading and the flame is dyin. Thought that we were a love story. Nothing will ever come naturally when I’m with you it’s hard for me to say here it comes goodbye don’t want to go but the spark is fading and the flame is dying you ask if i am alright for the i thousands time i say yes but in my head i'm screaming no rest my head down hoppen that it was you tappen on my shoulder then i realized i was making a scene always asking if it's ok when it's not you don’t do a thing. there's another sign that the spark is fading and the flame is dying before you talk about second chances you still don’t get it how many chances i've given you you saw what i was thinking and you thought it should all end because the spark is fading and flame is dying you can choose her don’t mind me you were just all that i wanted it ok’s used to watch me now you're watching her because the spark is gone and is flame is no more

I made his a few years ago it's called

Infinity

Color-coded just to keep me sane

my world is finally starting to take shape

I press the button and it burst into light

this time nothing will escape my sight

I see the stars and the planets noon follow

I expect to have the universe by tomorrow

I just sit back and relax I don't worry the world can wait no need to hurry

It's getting harder to stay in control

but perfection is my only goal

I have to fight it because I won't go back

but I'd rather see the whole world go to back to black

But then Im blinded by those lights from nowhere

this blue planet with life and an atmosphere

I look closer and I can't believe what I'm seeing in down there is me

But if it's me looking down on me the world above must also be this could go on for infinity ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty

Color-coded just to keep me sane my world is finally starting to take shit does the button and it burst into life this time nothing will escape my Sight I see the stars and the planets soon follow except to have to universe by tomorrow just sit back and relax don't worry he world can wait no need to hurry

Here's my go-to example.

>>385 I don't have anything against rap, but it's far from my favourite genre of music. Your style in particular I'm pretty iffy about. No offence meant here, but I find the personality/character/whatever you're going for in your songs to be kinda cringey - but your rhymes are good and your punchlines are clever.

So, uh, keep doing what you're doing. I could definitely see a lot of people liking what you've got here.

>>395 might just be the way that you wrote your post, but it reads like you have a handful of lyrics and want to find some random musicians online to write a song for you so you can sing over it.

It makes much more sense to find a band or songwriter that needs a vocalist rather than being a single dude trying to find a bunch of like-minded musicians on an anime-inspired message board. Or if you insist on looking online, there are probably websites and more specialised forums for finding band members than this one.

>>398 Listened to it.
You could use the beginning as a soundtrack for a thriller lol
However. I like the balance between the soft and slow passages on the one side and the distorted heavier parts on the other.
So everytime I was about to fall asleep, the distortion woke me up again and I finally managed to listen to the whole song.
I don't have much to complain about. The only thing is, that I listened to 11 minutes of music without remembering anything of the song afterwards lol
In other words: The lack of structuredness makes it hard to memorise.
Nevertheless, to write a song which doesn't fit the boring mainstream pattern working with three chords isn't a bad thing. It's rather the opposite. I enjoyed your music and I like that it's no common bullshit.
Keep it on, it's pretty cool, dude!

400 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2017-09-09 22:48 ID:3H3zsakL [Del]

>>399 hey bud, thanks for listening and taking the time to offer your criticism. I'm glad ypu enjoyed it (to the extent that you did lol).

Yeah, we wrote this when we were just about figuring out how to turn our jams into into structured songs, and we found that forcing it into a generic song structure (verse-chorus-verse... etc) kinda dulled it out.

I find the song to be pretty catchy in its own way, but that might be because I helped write it haha. I suppose I could see how the melody might not be so obvious upon first listen - still, I don't really think the fact tht you weren't able to digest it all on first listen is a bad thing. I suppose learning to write hookier melodies would be good for us in the long run, help people who aren't necessarily familiar with the genre get more into it.

We're considering getting another guitarisy to help fill out some of the space and add more to really hook people in, so hopefully that'll help us out with these things

>>404 Hey, it's you. Long time, eh.

New song is sick. Admittedly I haven't really kept up with the trends in instrumental metal, but this sounds pretty fresh to me. Reminds me a little of I Built the Sky, if you've ever heard of them (well, him), except more chaotic and math-y, with a slight Dillinger vibe. Melodic bit around 4:10 was particularly great.

406 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2017-09-13 20:33 ID:j6ovztH2 [Del]

(Sorry if this doubleposts it seems I clicked submit and it was lost to the nether)

>>405 Yeah no kidding. I basically dropped off the internet. I barely even keep up with some of my best friends these days. Kinda sad really. I'm glad I popped back here though because you guys have some really good stuff and I forgot to click follow way back when so I had lost it.

Song was very heavily Periphery and Corelia influenced, and I can totally hear the similarity to the artists you mentioned, though I never really listened to them. For some reason I thought I Built The Sky was one of those oh-so-midlate2000s style metalcore bands that I don't really like anymore, didn't know he was mathyprog. I got a good Mark Holcomb/Chon vibe out of him which is a VERY good thing. (Aside: saw Chon live this summer, killer show) Definitely my style of what I WANT to go for, just a little smarter since I'm a musically uneducated squawk. (Thus the chaotic nature of it, getting tasteful is hard but dammit I can make something aggressive)

The chordy/lead/solo segment you mentioned was the first time i ever wrote something like that and to be honest I'm super super proud of it so my insecure ass is happy you liked it. <__<

Hopefully more on the way sooooon...

>>406 yeah, I heard some of that Periphery influence in the main riff. I'm a bit iffy on Periphery, especially with their new stuff, so I didn't really want to make comparison's with a band I don't really like haha. Never heard of Corelia tho, I'll have to check them out.

Also, I saw Chon as well, last year with BTBAM. Man, they're something else. I fucking love their drummer.
New album wasn't as good as their first, tho.

Btw dude, are you a fan of Plini?

408 Name: Chimera !YFPCxyAOlA : 2017-09-15 23:14 ID:j6ovztH2 [Del]

>>407 I'm back and forth on Periphery as well haha. I've got a ton of respect for them but some of their songs aren't my thing. Corelia was this pretty cool metal band that released an EP a while back, pretty sure it was recorded with Misha Mansoor and Spencer Sotelo was going to be their singer before he joined Periphery. So the tie is there but the styles weren't really the same. That EP was what got me back into metal honestly. Unfortunately they've left severyone sour as they did a Kickstarter for their first full-length, more than doubled their goal...years later no album, just blowing smoke after taking everyone's money.

EP is great tho, still gets plenty of play in my car.

Now Plini though, Plini is incredible. Lately I've been listening to him, TONS of David Maxim Micic, Jakub Zytecki, and Nick Johnston. Throw in Guthrie Govan and Frank Zappa and you've got yourself my list of I NEED TO BE LIKE YOU heroes.

>>408 Found it on Spotify, so I'll give that EP a listen soon.

You've got a good taste in prog stuff, man. Jakub Zytecki in particular's probably one of my favourite recent discoveries - his band Disperse is also pretty great.

Back from the dead! I don't think I've posted on the BBS since 2016/2017 as almost everyone I was close with from that era of the site moved over to other platforms to stay in touch. As for this bump, I started a bedroom music project around when I joined the BBS in high school circa 2012. Scroll up and you'll find tons of (kinda shitty sounding and otherwise desperate) posts of mine. I didn't really know what to do with myself.

Fast forward: this past summer, I released my debut solo LP under the alias I've used since the start: The Heist Revenge. The album has six songs, all in varying degrees of a post-hardcore/punk vein, and the lyrics were inspired by (and written from the perspective of) various characters in the hit anime FLCL. If anyone wants to give it a listen, here is the Bandcamp page and here is the YouTube stream. There are currently no plans to add it to Spotify/Apple Music/etc because A) it's financially unviable for me rn and B) the audio would likely need a remaster to get it fully to spec, but it's still listenable quality as it stands and a far cry from the noise I was making under the same name a dozen years ago. Time flies, huh?
