This Town Needs Guns is a mathrock/alt/indie band from Oxford, England. Formed in 2004, their lineup has been a bit shaky, but consistently centers around brothers Tim (guitar) and Chris (drums) Collis. Teaming up with Jamie Cooper on bass and Stuart Smith on vocals, the group released two albums in 2008, the self-titled This Town Needs Guns and their follow-up Animals. Following the departure of Cooper and Smith in 2011 who left to pursue a career in graphic design and start a family respectively, Henry Tremain took on the duties of both former members, continuing the band as a trio. They've been recording work for their third studio album due out in spring or summer of 2013.

This Town Needs Guns' music is noticeably defined by the Collis' virtuoso clean guitar tapping and rhythmically technical beats. Despite the technicality of the music, there's still quite a poppy aspect to it. The clearly indie-influenced Smith flails around a bit on his vocals, and his lyrics are more sketches of stories, people, and situations than they are about defined subjects. They also have some silly song titles; see "26 Is Dancier Than 4," "I'll Forget About You Throwing That Rock Cos That Dance Was Pretty Funny," "It's Not True Rufus, Don't Listen To The Hat," and "Mnspector Iorse."

TTNG is a solid group with a promising future and superb musicability that deserve far more recognition than they get. They've made a name for themselves in the mathrock and indie circles, but I have a hunch a few of you guys have missed their name and would like their stuff. Give em a listen if you're interested.

>>2 From my understanding it means it's really technical and or complex music structure. Music Theory and all that jazz is very mathematical, so that makes sense to me.

So about 3 and a half months into 2013, I think their track "Havoc In The Forum" is my favorite song of the year so far.

Those riffs are just beautiful.

Saw the dudes last night in Austin. Absolutely superb show. I chatted with Chris beforehand and he signed my shirt.

Here is their tour list for the next month. If you have the opportunity to go to one of their shows, do it. You won't regret the good time you have, I promise. /o/

Oh DUDE, these guys are totally playing Columbia SC on the 4th with one of my favorite bands from the Carolina's, an instrumental group called PAN. I really want to make the trip up, but I'm already heading up to Athens on Thursday for Neutral Milk Hotel w/ Circulatory System, and probably won't be able to swing the funds :/

Neutral Milk Hotel sounds like it'd be a good show too though. Either way. /o/

Animals is swell, but if you dig that, check out their self-titled. As good as these guys' discog is, that record blows everything out of the water for me. So awesome.

So here's the story of how I quit guitar:

So first I watched a cover of "26 is dancier than 4."
And then I quit guitar.

Great story, right?

I can't believe it took me this long to realise how insanely good these guys are at their instruments.
