I've tried to write this motherfucking thread two days in a row, and both times, my computer has crashed halfway through.
Third time's the charm, right?

Tool is an alt metal/prog metal band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990 by Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones (guitar), Paul D'Amour (bass) (Justin Chancellor replaced him in 1995), and Danny Carey (drums), Tool is one of the most successful and sophisticated bands out there today. Fact.

Their sound is unmistakable. Keenan has some of the most unique songwriting and vocals out there, and although he's the frontman, he typically plays in the shadows live. Jones and Chancellor both make some fucking godly sounds out of their instruments, and Danny Carey.....well.....here:

Nuff fucking said.

Tool is insistent on privacy, and although they've been around for over 20 years, they've only released 4 studio albums, often taking long breaks with side-projects in between. All their albums are long as fuck, their shortest still being just less than 70 minutes. They also have a lot of beef with things, such as censorship, the music industry, buying music online, their thoughts on Scientology, etc.

Their music is often strange with its time signatures, and they have a knack for strange interludes and ambient pieces. One only has to take a brief listen to the amazing 79 minute (wait...brief?) masterpiece album that is Lateralus. The title track is written completely based on the Fibonacci spiral? Color me the fuck impressed.

Their album art is also fucking amazing. Just look at that 10,000 Days shit. That shit comes with viewing glasses that makes it all 3-D and shit. And the glasses are the fucking CD case itself. It's so epic, it got them a Grammy. Bitches love Grammies. They even don't allow their shit on iTunes because their album art is so fucking amazing. Some people would consider that pretentious, but I can tell you right now, buying that shit in person is totally worth it, bro.

I should also note that while they're a fairly reclusive band, they have made some of the most timeless classics in metal and prog, and have embarked on numerous worldwide tours. So this isn't some hipster shit. This is fucking Tool, damnit.

Obvious bias is obvious, but considering they've written 4 of my favorite songs (Ænema, Lateralus (OMFG GURREN FUCKING LAGANN SPIRALS AND SHIT), 10,000 Days, and Rosetta Stoned, if you're wondering.) they deserve a good thread like this.

Discography:
Opiate (EP) - 1992
Undertow - 1993
Ænima - 1996
Lateralus - 2001
10,000 Days - 2006

As for a starting place, 10,000 Days is their most accessible, but also their most disjointed. Lateralus is usually crowned their classic, but Ænima and Undertow please all the old metal fans, so again....you really can't go wrong.

Unless you dismiss this thread and listen to Nickelback thinking it's the most "heavy" shit on the planet. Then you've gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Old thread is old. Honestly one of my favorites though, I can't help but bump this up. My favorite song is a mix up between shcism, lateralus and 10000 day + wings for marie...Just so much epicness along with yata's perfect music threads.

I played those three songs from Guitar Hero World Tour on Wii. I was like what the hell is Tool? Never heard that band before.

I hate Nickleback!!! Why people listen to their music is beyond me. With that said, I'd like to add that Undertow and 10,000 Days were that first albums by Tool that I listened to and the music blew my mind. I have been an avid Tool addict ever since.

Bump.

It's weird, but since I've started listening to more stoner rock, I'm actually starting to like these guys.

And I used to really, really hate them.

Aenima is fucking godly.
Lateralus, I'll get to in a little while. Hyped.
I still don't like 1000 Days.

I heard somewhere that Tool is currently in the process of making a new album, can anyone confirm this or give more information?

>>10 They're out of the legal shitstorm that's apparently hindered them from
releasing anything new for the last 9 years, so there's that. As far as I know they haven't confirmed anything about having written or recorded anything yet.
