...really?
We don't have a Periphery thread?
....what the fucking hell.

WHAT THE FUCKING HELL, GAIZ.

For those of you who are out of the loop, Periphery is an American progressive metal band from Bethesda, Maryland, formed in 2005 by guitarist Misha Mansoor. The band is known for their heavy, modern, and progressive sound that includes polyrhythmic patterns and soaring melodies. Periphery is also known as one of the forerunners of "djent," which is characterized by a high-gain, distorted palm-muted guitar sound oridjinally created by groups such as Meshuggah.

After several lineup changes during its history, the band now includes Mansoor, vocalist Spencer Sotelo (whose voice goes up like an angel and down like a wounded ox,) djrummer Matt Halpern, addidjional guitarists dJake Bowen and Mark Holcomb, and bassist Adam "Nolly" Getgood.

Periphery released their debut self-titled album in 2010, with a follow-up EP "Icarus" in 2011, and the single "Passenger" in early 2012. Their sophomore release, "Periphery II: This Time It's Personal" was released just a week ago, and all of it kicks total fucking ass.

The band has become a fan favorite of some people on the BBS, most notably the Djentente bros, and the fact that the whole BBS doesn't know about this shit is almost insulting. We get everything from this, and it seems that a madjority of the people here don't know the meanings of the Periphepuns.

But now they shall.
Experience heavy metal at its finest. Periphery.
Love that shit.

I hate Djent. Periphery, however, is one of the most amazing bands on the planet. Also, if anyone cares, I thought the second album was better than the first, and I'm really looking forward to their next one, they are definitely getting better with each release.

Considering how highly you rate these guys, I'm curious as to why you dislike the entirety of djent so much. Periphery are one of the main bands in the genre, after all.

>>8 I just don't like that dirty, overly down-tuned palm muting that "djent" is based around. I always found it annoying and bland, so I could never really get into bands like Vildjharta or Meshuggah(no matter how much good I heard about them.), which is the kind of stuff that I consider "pure djent." Djent is still a rather loose term though, so I could be wrong, but still, Periphery (and by extension, Tesseract) always seemed more like a prog band to me. I know that some of their songs like The Walk and Insomnia (yeah, not too fond of those songs) are like that, but their progressive and technical side is prominent enough for me to enjoy most of their music. One of the reasons I thought that Periphery II was better was that it had very little of that, actually.

What this guy said. Periphery do it well, and their "djentisms" if we can call them that have gotten groovier and more focused on Periphery II, thus rendering it much more listenable overall.

Meh, this band was a phase for me, now I can't listen to them anymore. They are way too overrated now, and there are like 7 or 8 bands that pretty much took Periphery's sound and crappified it to a point that it just became annoying for me.

Having said that, when their next album comes out, I'll probably want to check it out, just to see if anythings changed. It's a shame, there was a point at which I thought they were one of the best bands ever.

Bump for the "Scarlet" music video.

For the sake of silly humor, I'm going out on a limb and saying this makes total win music video of the year.

>>18 I can't decide if that was the goriest music video I've ever seen or just...just-

I'm so confused I can't even think of some funny comparison gorrammit.

Also, that was the first time I ever listened to Periphery. *braces for impact*

>>18 That video... my god. It's either one of the best or one of the worst music video's that I've ever seen.

My faith in this band was restored when I heard this. Why didn't they just make this one song on the album?

For what it's worth, I actually like it split up as a centerpiece and book ends. The three songs in one are awesome, but I think the move to split them for the album was a good one.

Also, Spencer's song with From First to Last, while being generic as fuck, doesn't suck. Or maybe I'm just mellowing out musically. But it's definitely a lot better than their older shit, that's for sure.

24 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2014-12-03 19:40 ID:RedH/B60 [Del]

This will sound totally ridiculous considering how I titled this thread but I've loved the band's recent shifts away from the djent mindset. PII and Clear were both fun jams the whole way through.

Guitar-wise, I'm not really sure about the two new tracks. Vocally and everything else, it's the same quality as it's been. Time will tell. Still hyped for Juggernaut anyway.

25 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2014-12-04 05:59 ID:GHb71IXT [Del]

>>24 I dunno, I think Spencer's improved a lot since 2011. His harsh vocals have always been kinda weak, but he really impressed me on this new track.

Guitar-wise is pretty much the same though, so yeah.

26 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2015-02-05 17:40 ID:RedH/B60 [Del]

Aaaaaany thoughts on Juggernaut?

Concept aside, I think the lyrics are considerably lamer here than on most of their stuff and in general the songs are less well constructed, but there are still have plenty of "holy shit" moments throughout, as well as some killer tracks. I initially thought Alpha was kind of weak, but it's growing on me. Overall it's mainly Periphery is as Periphery does.

fuck I just realized I hadn't bumped this yet for Periphery III
so yeah, that came out a week ago
it's inconsistent and probably the band's weakest full-length, but it's still got a handful of fantastic tracks, chiefly among them this, this, and this.

28 Name: Enigami : 2016-07-29 07:13 ID:SB5kEQpQ [Del]

Not a big fan of the band, but your thread title is just too awesome. Props.

29 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2016-07-29 10:38 ID:7DLXUqjc [Del]

>>27 yeah, on second thought, probably won't check this out 'til my next Periphery phase. Assuming there'll actually be one.
