Why hasn't there been a jazz club?
Who knows the wonders of New Orleans, Bebop, Ragtime, blues, and all the great stuff?
JAZZ IS PLAYED FROM THE HEART

I like jazz, no matter what person or group is playing, it gives the cafe of bar type of feel xD

oh deary yes bump i'm in my jazz band at school and it's literally only the kids passionate enough to stick with it, so we get pretty hardcore XD. birdland by weather report will probably forever hold a special place in my heart. also, a jazz-related anime i recently watched was Kids On The Slope, but it also was very mushy, so, beware.

I think the obvious anime heavy-hitters to mention here are Yoko Kanno(Cowboy bebop and every other jazz anime ever) and Tsuneo Imahori(her guitarist and wrote the theme for Trigun. Personally, my favorite is Tsuneo's project Tipographica:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTKOdmRUXHM

Also, some of the stuff I listen to all the time is:

Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Joao Gilberto, Joe Pass, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Bobby McFerrin, Dave Brubeck, Pat Metheny, and Billie Holiday.
also, for some funky stuff, try Medeski, Martin, and Wood.
There's a smattering of a little of everything in there as far as my taste goes. I really like avant and minimalist and experimental jazz, too, but I don't have many artists to check out in those areas. If anyone can tag me back with some suggestions that would be awesome.

Mostly, I listen to Count Basie and pretty much everything composed by Irving Berlin.

I'm not 100% sure George Gershwin counts, since he composed a mix of classical and Jazz, but Rhapsody in Blue is definitely worth hearing.

Gershwin counts! His three Piano Preludes are blues:

I was browsing music threads until I came across this! I noticed no one hasn't mentioned Miles Davis. He's a very good jazz composer and trumpet player. I'm sure many of you would remember the album "Kind of Blue."

I love playing bass for my Jazz Ensemble!
We're thinking about getting a electric upright to play with.
I can't wait to play some Charles Mingus tunes on it!
oh, and you guys should check out David Brubeck, Snarky Puppy, Jaco Pastorius, Bill Evans, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and Charles Mingus is a MUST.

Jazz is great! I'm in jazz band at school and I think I want to do jazz studies as a minor in college. Just this past year I got to meet Russ Phillips (a famous jazz trombonist) it was amazing.

59 Name: Mickel : 2015-01-06 08:15 ID:9/C6NLAw [Del]

Hey gang, any of you Jazz nuts still out there? What's everyone listening to at the moment?

60 Name: YAAAAAAAA!8NBuQ4l6uQ : 2015-01-06 16:48 ID:eyq0nLCi [Del]

Hey everyone. Jazz is great! After listening to it for a while, other music seems kinda boring, right? Also i agree with many of you, playing in a jazz band is so fun, we play funk, swing and jazz in mine, it's amazing to hear my band play such good music when im only 15.

The dirty dozen brass band from new Orleans are definitely my favorite band in the genre. Anyone else listen to them?

61 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2015-01-06 20:11 ID:XPOYYJLy [Del]

I listened to Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain last night trying to get to sleep. It kept me up, but in the best possible way.

Interested in listening to more, so if anyone has any recommendations... seriously, the guys body of work is fucking massive, I need help sifting through it.

Hey have you guys watched Kids on the Slope? Is an awesome anime that mixes classic Jazz, Bromance and Romance.

64 Name: Mickel : 2015-01-08 04:56 ID:9/C6NLAw [Del]

>>63 I started watching Kids on the Slope today at your recommendation! It's pretty cute haha And the music element is really fun.

Man, where have I been? All about jazz and just started a band myself. It's only going so far as to read chord charts and improv over a Standards book, though.

My favorite artists lately are Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Ernestine Anderson, Anita O'Day, Charles Mingus, and many many others. Always good stuff.

66 Name: Mickel : 2015-01-12 03:35 ID:9/C6NLAw [Del]

>>65 Sounds great man. Standards are the way to go! What's your axe?

I haven't heard of a couple of those, I'll have to check them out.

67 Name: Kazehachi!V/vi9gujn6 : 2015-01-13 13:27 ID:EJ5PR1ln [Del]

>>66 Yeah, there's so much to check out that I honestly need to do more hunting! I play both keys and drum kit;just recently went back to kit for fun.

68 Name: [Blank] : 2015-01-14 07:22 ID:9oU9if7M [Del]

Well, if you want a subgenre of jazz (ska), you should try Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.

69 Name: Kazehachi!V/vi9gujn6 : 2015-01-17 16:12 ID:EJ5PR1ln [Del]

>>68 TSPO is cool, but there are plenty of other bands before them that do about the same thing. Subgenres are cool, but I think this is sticking more or less to true jazz, rather than subgenres.

70 Name: Parnassius : 2015-02-08 08:14 ID:qTrL3NcS [Del]

I really like classical jazz, Charles Mingus, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker and many others, in those time I'm listening BadBadNotGood, Hiromi if some knows, it's really good.

I recently purchased Kamasi Washington's album on a whim. As far as I can tell it's just 3 hour-long discs worth of jamming with some hooks maybe. It's glorious

Also, this is what happens when you mix jazz with post-rock.

Josh Nelson is a very talented artist. His albums are all masterpieces of jazz. Some friends of mine covered one of his works in college and we were all blown away by how intense it was.

Man, I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned artists like Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Mal Waldron, Ella Fitzgerald, or Chet Baker.

I’m partial to jazz with vocals, and some swing too – particularly Glenn Miller (but that’s mainly because of my granddad).

Chet Baker is among my favorite artists jazz or otherwise – and his album ‘Chet Baker Sings’ is a seminal work of cool jazz and ranks among my favorite albums. (I love it so much I even went and bought in on vinyl.) I’d heartily recommend a listen – the album has such a smooth, lovelorn sound, and Baker’s trumpet is impeccable.

I also love Billie Holiday’s ‘Lady in Satin’ – but that’s a bit of a hard listen, considering how weathered her voice sounded at that point in her life. I don’t really know how to describe it, but the grain and deterioration in her voice carries such emotion – especially on “I’m a Fool to Want You.”

Could some of you recommend me some good Bebop piano players? I just know Thelonouis Monk on this field -not sure if he also played bebop - but would like to hear music of others.
