Here is an excerpt from Thomas Nassiff's album review from AbsolutePunk.net:
"One of the most enthralling, captivating releases of 2010, HYSMPC? is one of those albums that you can listen to dozens of times without ever settling on a favorite song, because they're all your favorite. It's one of those albums where you want to show it to the whole world, but you'll only show it to a select few friends because it's that good. You won't just recommend this to any old acquaintance. This album is basically equivalent to how I want my marriage to be. After my honeymoon phase with Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?, I continue to love it dearly and take it to bed with me every night.
"As their fan base will tell you, Brooklyn trio A Great Big Pile of Leaves don't have a typical indie rock sound. They've got a heavy jazz influence in their music, especially in Tyler Soucy's drums, paced by unique, spastic rock guitar work excellently executed by Pete Weiland and pulsing bass lines from Tucker Yaro. The thing that really makes A Great Big Pile of Leaves stand out, however, is the pop aspect of their sound: it provides for an easily accessible style that can please everyone from the most casual of listeners to the harshest of critics. Opener 'Alligator Bop' displays this all perfectly, as a warm guitar brings you into the album and Weiland's phenomenal vocals carry you out of the song. For only having three main band members, there is a lot of music going on during 'Alligator Bop' and the rest of Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex? Weiland's soaring melody in this track is an example of many similar ones you will find on the record."When I saw this band at The Fest 10 in October, I didn't know what to expect. As superficial as it was, I decided to check out this band based on two factors: the band name (I'm a sucker for indie shit) and the venue in which they were to perform. The Atlantic is a venue in Gainesville, FL, known for its semi-underground alt-rock, indie and punk scene. If a band is playing at The Atlantic, you can bet on it being a member of those music scenes with a following exclusive to themselves. A Great Big Pile of Leaves (AGBPOL) is a perfect example of such a band.
AGBPOL combines poppy ambient guitar melodies, jazz influenced bass lines, dance rock drums with a love for the upbeat and post-punk vocals to form a instrumentally mature progressive rock akin to the ending soundtrack of a good movie. Their music, specifically the album HYSMPC, lulls you and serenades the easy listening and the post-rock fanbase simultaneously, creating a chilled atmosphere decorated with subconscious foot-tapping making it, as Nassiff describes, music to be revisited time and time again. Each song has an Easter egg buried in the rhythm and lyrics that does more than hooks you like a fish; it invites you to swallow the hook!
Before you know it, the songs are over and you don't even know what happened. "Time flies when you are having fun" applies to this band's musical aesthetics. If you appreciate the raw authenticity of a small time band, then AGBPOL will compliment your ears and stimulate your mind.
