Prog Rock, Prog Metal.

Any Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool or Porcupine Tree fans here?

2 Name: Chiarosa : 2012-09-02 23:43 ID:prhnA4IK [Del]

Hey.

Dream Theater and Tool fan here.

I think Coheed and Cambria qualifies as Progressive Rock/Metal as well, last time I checked.

JSYK.
See ya 'round!

There sure is =) Dream Theater and Opeth are like heaven for me. Although, Opeth's new album 'Heritage' was a little too soft for my tastes, but hey, aside from that nothing but gold from sll of them! When I am in a gloomy mood, I like to play silhouette from orchid on my piano. I have not heard much Porcupine Tree though. I have been meaning to, I guess I will buy a few of their albums tonight.

Stay metal! \.m./

I recommend starting with Deadwing by PT.
In Absentia is said to be their best, but Deadwing provides far more repeat value, at least for me, and it's just as good overall.

Yeah, Dream Theatre is amazing. Another great one is Between the Buried and Me, and Rush is pretty cool as well. Still though, my favourite Prog band would still have to be Opeth, all of their albums are amazing. My favourite album of theirs would have to be Still Life, and I actually really liked Heritage, and I think it's one of their best albums yet.

Tool, A Perfect Circle.

Hell yes. Everything that MJK does is so badass (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer). I like the music from Dream Theater, btu their singer doesn't really stand out to me. Those guys are fucking dumb for kicking Mike Portnoy out of the band though. i saw that fucker play Avenged Sevenfold's shit live with one god damned hand when he was touring with them after the Rev died, and their drums aren't simple. Periphery isn't too bad a band either, dispite their singer's high voice, which ruins some sings for me.

Periphery's vocalist's high voice more often makes than ruins their songs for me. To each their own, I suppose.

But yeah, MJK is boss.

>>8 Dream Theater did not kick Portnoy out, he quit because he wanted the band to go on hiatus and the rest of the them didn't agree.

As for Avenged Sevenfolds drums, yes they are really simple. The only reason the drums are good now is because Portnoy is the one playing them.

And after you get used to them, Spencers vocal are amazing. His harsh vocals on Periphery were annoying though, but they greatly improved on Periphery II.

>>10 that's not the way i heard it. i saw an interview with him where he said they kicked him out, and he was totally not expecting it.

What? are you high? Avenged Sevenfold's drums have always been good. I was actually a bit less impressed with the drums on the Nightmare album in comparison to their other albums. although, to be fair, I've paid less attention to the drums and more to the guitars on that album.

I mean, his vocals aren't horrible, they just have an annoying twinge to them. it's the same as when i first started listening to Avenged Sevenfold. something about matt's singing just annoyed the shit out of me. i'm over it now though, and i'm beginning to get over spencer's singing too.

>>11 totally looked back on this and realized that it can be misinterpreted, he DID want to take a year off, and the rest of the band didn't and he was very adamant about not wanting to tour, so they kicked him out, and it surprised him. or at least, that's what i read.

>>12 Here, both sides of the story. This is what I read, anyway.

Is Circa Survive considered prog?

I like Coheed. I saw Porcupine Tree live once, but I haven't listened to much of their stuff otherwise. What I heard was amazing, though.

A relatively new band (Only one EP out now) that I became instantly obsessed with-

http://soundcloud.com/corelia/sets

I've heard them described as "Opeth and Dream Theater had a baby". They're one of the few metal bands that make truly brutal music that I can also still consider beautiful. Give them a listen.

Oh, and they encouraged torrenting their EP from the Pirate Bay, so if you like free music, they're your guys...

Steven Wilson's new record The Raven That Refused To Sing (and Other Stories) came out this week. Finally.

Best Steven Wilson material since Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet imo. Prog rock/jazz fusion. He was sounding stale for a while but this release has renewed my interest in his work.

I have a question. What does "progressive" typically refer to, in terms of genre? I've heard prog rock and prog metal, and rarely...

Progressive Piano?

If I had to guess, it refers to a song that escalates or develops into different, even experimental styles and textures as it builds up... but that could be said for a lot of songs. Or maybe the lattermost just isn't related to the former two at all, and it's just a word. The only thing I do know is that I tend to like Prog Metal over "normal" metal, though I'm not a big enough fan of the genre to namedrop.

22 Name: ShotaroKaneda !radhZ7oYHc : 2013-02-26 18:10 ID:FKjNe+UV [Del]

>>20 Alrighty then, here's a better question. How well do you know Mikael Akerfeldt?

>>21 You've got the general idea, yes. Prog doesn't have a definitive sound, which is kinda the point. Basically a prog rock or metal song is a song which has it's roots in rock/metal, but transcends the genre by including within it musical ideas not typical of the genre.

23 Name: Yatahaze !E/8OvwUzpY : 2013-02-26 19:34 ID:v0ByqS22 [Del]

I don't know Mikael Akerfeldt that well.
I know he's the main driving force behind Opeth and that he's collaborated with Wilson before numerous times.

But I don't know all that much about Opeth either, so...
:P
