>>22Here's the thing with that though:
Green Day
didn't change with this upcoming trio of discs. In my opinion (again, this is just opinion) the music I heard on
Uno! was more like a desperate attempt to grab the charm that their previous music had, but it didn't quite realize what that was, and just cranked out some of the same, recycled Green Day songs we've already heard, but in less-impacting, less-full, less, well....good versions. While the "they're not the same as they were before" argument would normally be a crutch to use when someone disses a band's newer material, in this case it's backwards. They more or less
are the same as they were when
American Idiot was released, and more so when
21st Century Breakdown was.
What made
American Idiot so impacting to me (and I do consider it one of my 10 favorite albums of all time) was the fact that it sounded like a band finally becoming rejuvenated after little success past
Dookie in the 90s.
American Idiot was a thought-out, elaborately simple, and immediately catchy and memorable monument of its time.
21st Century Breakdown was an attempt to duplicate the success
Idiot had, but ended up being less-realized then it should've. The songs could stand on their own, but as a concept, it felt like an
Idiot knockoff.
Where
Uno! goes wrong is the fact that it feels so uninspired to me. It's the sound of a band that is ignoring the fact that it's running on fumes instead of checking the engine and trying to fix it. The hardest part of being a fan of a group is knowing if they release something you shouldn't regard as good. Believe me, I've been there and done that. (Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy, what the fuck were you?) In conclusion,
Uno! just doesn't stack up. There comes a point where people, even haters of a group have to acknowledge if said group has released an epic album. However, that also means there's a point where a fan has to admit that another album by said band just isn't up to par with what it should/could be.
But hey, I liked
Warning which a lot of Green Day fans disliked. I'm not saying people can't have differing opinions or guilty pleasures, but I will go on record by saying
Uno and the rest of the new album trio sounds like it's simply being made to give fans what they want, even if it sounds like a lot of fluff.
