The Ultimate Question: What is the reason for our existence?? (117)

1 Name: OrigamI : 2013-02-14 10:57 ID:AYlBsWdQ [Del]

Why do we exist? Where did we come from? What's our purpose in life? What purpose does life have for us? These are some of my questions about life. Also, don't give me that "God was bored" crap, Alpha is dead and Omega is somewhere in hiding. Powerless, alone and probably sad.

2 Name: Temms : 2013-02-14 11:28 ID:co3QAvk4 [Del]

There is a reason to all things. Whether we come to know them now or later is different and unique to each individual person. My personal reason is to touch the lives of others and help in whatever way I can. I know it doesn't always just come to use immediately, but it will come in due time.

3 Name: Miki : 2013-02-14 11:31 ID:8BRFVoPA [Del]

4 Name: Dakoren : 2013-02-14 11:41 ID:nTkW8nXb [Del]

>>2 I don't really agree. I don't think everything has a reason to be. I suppose some things are, and that's all, their existence is, and there is no reason, they are just.
After all we can't explain everything. And even if there is a reason to all things as you say (because I'm not saying you're wrong or what, anyone is free to have their own ideas, their own representations, and their own interpretations), I guess it is better not to know everything, and to keep a part of mystery.

5 Name: poncho : 2013-02-14 11:59 ID:No4ZroOf [Del]

I think... Our purpose is to be happy. To make others happy. To just live. To just be here. Out ultimate goal in life, I think, is to be happy and see who all we can make happy. The Dollars is a group devoted to that, right? That's what Mikado wanted to do, right? He wanted to turn this into something good to help others. To support those who need it. We are here to do all we can to make this place a better place for future generations to live. Even just doing little things. That's what being a Dollar is about. That's what living is about.

Each personal has their own niche that suits their own personality and skill set. Our job is to find that and use it to the best of our abilities for the better good. I don't know about others, but I find that my reason for being is to be both mental and emotional support for those around me, even at the cost of my mental and emotional comfort. I am second. Now that's not to say that everyone should be that way because that lifestyle has its flaws. But I think it's good to put others first every once in a while.

Hmmm, well I think our existence is just be happy. You make yourself happy, when you're still a teenager, have some fun, go shopping, watch the movies, play at a theme park, sing at karaoke, do all kinds of fun and crazy things. you can help make people happy, since when we wake up every day we would rather be happy than be depressed or sad.
When we get older, and look back at our memories there will be no regrets, since throughout your life you've lived out your goals, lived to the fullest, maybe you had struggled through some bad times but now they have become precious memories to you.

In my opinion, things as "reason" or "sense" is nothing natural, it is something virtual made by Human Minds. You could say we are all the products of random existance. But if we give the human mind an own sense of realitiy, then we can call sense and reason real, too. Then again, all that matters is to become happy, because that is and will always be the ultimate Goal of every Human, even if everyone has his own way of doing it.

Now this is a question I like. I've been thinking about the answer to it for some time now, so let's see if I can make it sound coherent enough.
I think we are lucky to be born. Because humans are the only ones who can experience feelings and memories and acknowledge them to some extent, more that any other creature on this planet. Honestly, speaking from a religious point of view (for those who are not interested in this, you can stop reading, because this is my personal view of things), I think that if God chose you let us be born, then it means we were created with a purpose. I believe there is no man on earth that has no reason in life. We all have a reason to be alive, it's just a matter of time whether we find it or not, because I know there are persons who simply cannot track it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I haven't found my purpose to live yet, but I KNOW there has to be something for my existence to have a meaning.
Because I strongly consider that this world is more that meets the eye.

And I am the most pessimistic person I know. I'm serious.

Sure we are born to die, but the living part comes in the middle. Its what you do with your life that matters. I am a philosopher so the greatest happiness for me and purpose in life like Aristotle would say is to contemplate my existence. My reason for living is to think about why i am living.

For example, the Greek gods were jealous of humans because humans could not understand truth. The Gods were always bored (as always shown in their mythology) and wanted to become normal humans so they too could battle the impossible, so they could go against the current of the universe in a never ending battle just as we do when chasing dreams and truth.

Hope my thoughts helped you guys create your own.

P.S Philosophy never accomplishes anything except helps you attain happiness and prepares you for death.

Why do we exist? The most accepted theory is billions of years of evolution through natural selection and pure coincidences. Where do we come from? Again, most people believe we evolved from single-celled organisms the inhabited the oceans when Earth cooled down. There is no set purpose in life, only the one you create for yourself.

People who are born in this world are meant to have a purpose, no matter what it is or who they are. The purpose of their existence is to be found out later in their life, on their own. No one, no matter how much we would want that, can tell us what our pupose is. I believe the purpose of humanity itself is to live, to experience and remember for posteriority for as long as it exists. I hope I had enough logic in my words.

Well for me... there is no 'reason' for my existence. I don't personally believe in a higher power that made us for any purpose or whatever. I prefer to live my life in a way I can enjoy it, I consider my life to be the only thing I truly own, since it's something I alone have. Material objects can be passed from person to person, but this life is mine. So I want to enjoy it, that is all for me, to enjoy my life and help others enjoy theirs is my reason to continue the existence I have gained for nothing. If I, lying in my death bed, can think about my life and smile then I would consider my purpose complete.

52 Name: Thoughts and feelings : 2013-10-29 21:06 ID:UoNMwrSv [Del]

I think that there is no single reason for existence, but there are infinite reasons. I believe anything is possible in terms of what an individual human life's perspective on this topic could possibly be. I don't understand those who would want to "help" make the world burn. They should help by burning themselves, if they truly believe that. I think a lot of people say really cruel and destructive things because it is a easy cop out. It doesn't involve any real contemplation. Any sort of contemplation being avoided is out of fear, specifically fear of change and of paradigm shifts.I think there are even people don't really figure out a reason, and keep living just because it is easier than facing the unknown that death brings. People who want to bring happiness to others, often sacrifice finding happiness for themselves. People don't all search for happiness, because they get lost in their existence. Many just simply forget to search.

53 Name: Thoughts and feelings : 2013-10-29 21:12 ID:UoNMwrSv [Del]

I have admittedly fallen into this last category more often than I should. For me I do want to help others, and do get joy out of doing so, but without personal fulfillment I still could not be content. I don't think happiness is so much a single scale as it is many scales which all seek fulfillment. I am often content with one thing and still unresolved in another. Some have never been resolved, as of yet.

54 Name: Shadows : 2013-10-29 23:56 ID:4+ixfZso [Del]

I think that we each have different reasons to exist and we discover what our reason is as we learn about ourselves (what we like and dislike) and gain life experience. Some people never start the journey to discover their reason, some start and never finish, and some actually discover their reason for existing.

Hello,

The most simplest answer to your question can be found in the Qur'an, the final revelation from God.

God tells us in the quran in 51:56, "I have only created Jinns and men so that they may worship Me."

So what does that say to you? That God created us only for the sole worship of him, in every aspect of our lives. Whether we are eating, drinking, walking, talking, reading, cooking, etc. Islam tells us how to live our lives in full. As the Qur'an says in 6:162 :

"Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds

67 Name: Mr.Love : 2013-11-01 07:13 ID:/P95bULx [Del]

The only thing we take to heaven with us is our character. Therefore one can conclude that our journey here provides us with opportunities, tests, and challenges that improve our character. Think of it this way...would parents want their children to grow to be 5 years old then stay that way physically, mentally, and emotionally for the rest of their lives? So to God uses this life to build our character, to mature us. Many resist the tests and frequently fail them, but the sooner we realize they are opportunities the sooner God's plans for us will be revealed.

68 Name: Sejin !PKt//nzxc2 : 2013-11-01 14:06 ID:ne4vWOnn [Del]

I believe the reason we're here is the combination of luck, chance, and evolution. With luck and chance, life began on this planet. With evolution, life...uh...evolved. With more luck, life survived multiple mass extinctions. With further evolution, mammals began to thrive, and humans eventually came about and became the dominant species on the planet.

With the evolution of our ability to think and the development of society, humans developed a need for more than basic survival and instinctual needs. And that brings us to today, where we contemplate what our reason or purpose or whatever else is, and debate whether it's really up to us or if there's some higher being that's really in control. Since I don't believe in a higher being, I think it's entirely up to us to decide what to do with our lives, and to figure out what meaning, if any, it holds.

Damn. This question goes pretty deep. I would like to say the generic "this question is too broad to handle" argument, but there's probably a much simpler and valid reply.

There are many things we don't understand, and for everything we DO, there's many times more that we don't. Personally, I believe that a thorough understanding of all knowledge disciplines - astronomy, medicine, art, epistemology, etc. - would allow us to better answer this question. Astronomers speculate that the answer to life lies somewhere in the universe, while philosophers believe it can be found by exploring the self, and still yet, historians believe that our own history may hold the answer to this existential question.

But what do we really know? For many theories, even evolution, there are heaps of evidence that tend to lead to reason-based conclusions. To what extent can we trust our own reasoning? Do we perceive the world correctly, or is our perception of the world somehow flawed? Although the latter is pure speculation, it may be a valid extension of our observations of our own species so far.

My answer to this question:
there is no "reason" that we exist. I think that most people have trouble with understanding this. A "reason" is a human concept. There is no "reason" why the world exists. It simply came into being as a result of the right circumstances at the right times, etc. Thus, the "reason" you speak of is completely and utterly empty. There is no broad, blanketing, extrinsic meaning to human life; we must make our own meaning. Carving our own path of life creates meaning for ourselves.

I believe that we exist to change the world, for better or for worse. The latter is up to us.

Hm....this is a hard question
There isnt much point of living really. Emotions arent useful. Everything about us such as money, bones, personalities all just help us survive. But really there isnt much point of living. Its all for personal enjoyment really. Why we exist? Cos we were born and havent died yet. There is no purpose in life, except to hand down our dna for the next generation really.

75 Name: Yuuki : 2013-11-02 23:39 ID:XfplSwUj [Del]

Random Asian Passing By.
I don't really believe their is a true reason to why we must live or we must live at all. If we go extinct, the same cells that created us are still there somewhere in this expanding universe and by some chance they could recreate another human. Same goes for all the extinct animals that have already suffered this fate. I don't believe there is a good or bad about anything, everything is neutral and is good and bad in its own way therefore nothing can really be one or the other.

Every time I sit in bed and ponder about the reason why we exist my head hurts, it really hurts like all hell. Eventually I forget what I was thinking about and become depressed... not because I forgot but because I am afraid to find out what I was about to discover. This happens every time, I always forget. It feels like someone or something is restricting me from knowing, or my mind itself is telling me that I am not prepared yet for the truth.

My answer to your question(s) would have to be:
I think we do not have a purpose to why we exist and that we are here because certain events happened and molecules formed and atoms and other crap. We just happen to be the product of those events. Just live happy, if you want to die, I can't stop you. HOWEVER... the one thing almost ALL living things and agree with, whether it be human or beast... plant or animal, we can all agree that WE WANT TO LIVE. There are those out there who just want to end it all, but the majority 99% of living things want to survive. THAT is MY personal question... not why we exist, but why we try to STAY existing. To sum it all up, I don't give two s*** why we exist, I have a theory for that now and I KNOW that I will NEVER KNOW why this universe exist, why life exists. I just want to know why we want to survive, what is it we are doing by surviving... is something going to happen that we require one of our species to exist when it happens? Are we having a race? (Maybe that's why we can't exactly communicate with animals, probably because it's cheating, we're cheating now by experimenting animals and speech, maybe.) What is there at the end of this endless road. There is no end right? Right? An end to it all... that would be pointless wouldn't it? Not really, these animals that live among us, dogs, cats, bird... they could just be living for the hell of it. Why do WE as humans strive to gain something, why does our greed cause us to want t- I should be typing up an essay right about now... no time to waste pondering about pondering about life. Later!

I don't think there is... we exist simply because we started to exist, so there isn't any reason for our existence. For that reason we're pretty lucky to be in the right place at the right time! There's no reason for our lives but we should just enjoy life while we have it!

I have been wondering what purpose humans serve in the circle of life, since _most_ of stuff we do has usually no benefit to other participants in the circle. Like, the cons overcome the pros so its not-so-equal exchange.

If there is any God, of course. But it's true that we have it in our nature to want to rise above of our limits.

>>79 we could just be an experiment if there is a god. Like, all those biblical events, and miracles and such happened a while ago, and god saw what worked and what didn't, and went to take his/her notes to another planet or universe

From a religious pint of view a person might say something like :We live to serve our God and to bring as many people as we can to Him. Other people might say something like :We live to have fun or bring happiness to the people we encounter, or even they might say life is meaningless so you should just do whatever you want. Then there are people who say we live to make a difference, but I believe that goes hand in hand with the religious perspective. Basically everyone believes something different so everyone will reply with something different, which makes me glad that you asked this question since we will see many interesting replies :)

There isn't one. I think everything exists, and that could be a reason- but that's just a far-flung hypothesis.

86 Name: ピカブ : 2013-11-03 15:31 ID:4Kxx/9Sq [Del]

Sometimes I wonder and then I think about why we have to have a purpose: from a religion-logic point of view (which I struggle with sometimes) it would make sense that we had a purpose, if we can ponder this question then there should be an answer.
From a scientific point of view (which I think I'm fairly amateur in also) I suppose our existence is to support other species' existences; if we didn't need cows do you think they would have been hunted into extinction for bein big stupid animals full of meat? Our protection is the cows' greatest asset in my opinion

The reason for our existence is also our "meaning" of life. When people ask "What is life" or "What is the meaning our existence?", they go together. We can't put a fixed meaning on life because there is life everyone. Humans, plants, animals, etc. And everyone has their own life goals (Meaning of existence). Your life goal equals your meaning for existence/definition of life. When you ask yourself or someone ask you, "What is the definition of life?" or "What is the meaning of existence?" Just say this: "It is whatever you want it to be."

You can only answer this question with more questions.
Is there a creator interested in us? Is there a purpose? What's life's meaning?
Humans are complicated beings, very powerful ones but insignificant, is there any other meaning in life rather than surviving?
Life is a won fight between our ideals to be able to prevail. Life has us and we have life. We compete with others since we were born to feel better with ourselves, to FIND ourselves in this world.
We exist to fight and win battles.
We might be a coincidence, or some god's experiment, but we know we are born with no purpose and we all know our destiny is doing what pleases us to create ourselves, to find our own path, to give a meaning to our lives.
We want to look back proudly at our actions.
At least that's what I think

I believe the meaning of life is to live and to do what you can to get your name know and become famous.

91 Name: Cyy !uXmReHf/YE : 2013-11-04 19:16 ID:/0IZD0rs [Del]

I think that's determined entirely by you. Thinking about it, the question wouldn't exist if humans hadn't developed philosophy or a natural curiosity. The fact that people ask why, to me, is an unnecessary stop. Don't ask why, decide why and live out your life as you see fit.

My two cents~

Life has no purpose. We live then die and that's the end (depending on what you believe) however I believe that people create their own reason for living and if you don't yet know what that is continue living and im sure you will find your own reason for living.

It will probably require alot of effort and time to be able to put a decent post about my own perspective here!

On the other hand, I wanted to point it out, that many ''dollars'' are actually answering the question ''what is the reason that YOU excist'' rather than the excistence of humanity or the universe in general. Sure, you can make your life worth it but accomplishing things based on your own ideals but that differs than why our universe excist in the first place and why life started anyhow!

We exist to do as we please we exist to live, love, grow and eventually die everyone is born not knowing why but everyone finds their path for some it's religion for others it's work or family. We are made to become who we want to contribute to the human race as a whole some people contribute and exist to fight, some to learn, some to just die everyone is different everyone will be born and learn to do what they were ment to, do what they were ment to do and die this is the cycle of our existence

well, were especialize for different reason to exist, each of us.
and you will be able to answer that when you already find yours, and if youre still in the process of finding it, dont worry, it will come unexpectedly

sometimes we exist just to change one persons life =)

If we don't know what is the reason why we live, then we should find one and hold on to it.
Also we need to discover new things and enhance them.

I think that all cultures, sciences, religion, government and even ideas are immature in some sense of the word new, but knowing where they spawned, and why they were created, essentially creates an enormous room for failure, but look at America. We're no different in the sense of prosecution. It's no different in the sense of religion, culture, art, and government. I think they have some good ideals but have no sense of direction or understanding of the fact that we are human and humans will only consume making us the perfect imperfect. Utopia and God is a nice idea, however there is nothing in our dictionary that we can label perfect, except when it fits our personal opinions.

I understand why we want to show others to 'judge' us and the need to be accepted, and to create a perfect being, God, government, money, religion, science, culture, music is all in the suit/process/journey to be judged/accepted and we ratify our consciences or intelligences with satisfaction that we can define acceptance through various means of understanding.

But to improve ourselves I believe we must start with ourselves and accept us for who we are through unfiltered empathy (math, Jesus, ect.)

Well... There is none. If you think about I we are all going to die. There's no escaping that but if you die for... Lets say you died for your loved one, their going to die as well you know. Even the world is going to be gone and I know that its ages from now but no matter what the world will be gone. So there is literally no point in living. We are just dummies being controlled by society and doing what society wants. I hate that it has to be like that but we cant help it. That's just the way it is.

115 Name: SpookyCece : 2015-10-28 08:38 ID:5zbESrzK [Del]

The reason? None!!! It depends on each individual! I personally think I was born to learn lots of language and to be into anime/manga. But if you really need a reason for every human being ever I would say discover! We were all born to create, explore and admire!!!!!!! That's the beauty of life ;)

Life just is. The universe does not care why it exists. The animals in the forests and the seas do not care why they exist. It is man's own mind that generates these worries. We become consumed by our feeble attempts to assert our "superior intellect" over the rest of creation by grasping at straws to answer such questions.

117 Name: JACK : 2016-05-14 19:07 ID:jzVUe9DC [Del]

Let's be reasonable here. There is literally no meaning to life at all. Society has been trying to figure that question out since the dawn of man kind and it has come with no answer. That's what it is and we have no control what so ever.
You might be feeling sad right about now in knowing that your entire existence is a mear joke, and that anything anywhere is not worth your life and you should turn to a life of anarchy. But i'll tell you this. Life is about a story. You can't measure happiness, nor wealth in love or luck and since there's no reason of our existence there's no right and wrong.
What there is,is a lesson, a journy, a motivation, a fall, a rise, a story.
You don't know why you are here, who made you or what you are going to do or if that future is already set in motion. But why should you care about this big filosophical question anyway ? Think about these questions again.
Why are you here ? because i know i am. Who made me ? My mother, father, friends and foes, my loves and many others i choose to be with. What am i going to do ? You decide. Is it already seatled for me ? Well there's only one way to find out. The bad things in life are never going to stop happening otherwise it wouldnt be a good story now would it ?
In summary, don't wonder if someone else already wrote a story, writte it yourself.
