The definition of love is: an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment. But there are many types of love.

4 Kinds to be exact.

Storge (Affection/Family) - This is fondness through familiarity, especially among family members or people who have otherwise found themselves together by chance.

Phileo (Friendship) - Friendship is a strong bond existing between people who share a common interest or activity. This includes companionship; that is gregariousness; as well as friendship proper which is between Life Partners and the like but often starts as companionship.

Eros (Romance) - This is love in the sense of 'being in love'. (This is distinct from sexuality.) This kind of love longs for the emotional connection with the other person. It can be part of "Eros," but on its own, it is not one of the loves, just desire.

Agape (Unconditional Love) - This is the love that brings forth caring regardless of circumstance. The essence of agape love is self-sacrifice. It is also a decision, not fueled by pure emotions (theoretically). However emotions such as the other three loves can provide a "booster rocket" into agape.

I have seen a few similar posts but I want to be more specific here. When speaking of romantic love we have two stages. The honeymoon period (falling in love): caused by adrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin. Being in love: Caused by oxytocin and vasopressin. In familial love we are looking at oxytocin. This chemical has also been said to be a big player in why humans and dogs came to be so close. I don't need it to be magic. I still feel it as strongly as anybody else.

I have seen this happen a few times myself. The bible says that "God is love." If this is so, then love must be extremely strong. But there are solid facts that love exsists, too! Have you ever wondered why people give eachother unexpected gifts? Or why we accept apologies? What causes that emtpy feeling of depressed sadness we feel when someone extremely close to us is gone? It is love. Why do ppl appreciate? What makes us feel hurt? What makes us feel invinceable? It is love. 1st corinthians states: "...there remains hope, love,and peace; these three. But the strongest of these is love." The bible also says: "Love is more powerful than death itself." So, there u have it. Human reasoning AND religious reasons. So, to conclude, Love is a feeling. a very powerful feeling that affects everyone in some way. :) Hope this helps. and yes, haters and bad ppl love to. They love badness, or crime, or money. not ppl. But nevertheless, there is love.

Love is an overly used word with a real meaning that is hidden within the depths of superficial teenagers that seem to use it with no real reason.

In my book, it is that person that you cannot live without. The provide you with whatever you want and need, as best as they can, and more. They don't care if they loose everything in the process.

To give an example. A rich guy is obsessed with his money. He's like Mr. Crabs from Spongebob. If you could marry his money, he would. Then a poor girl comes along. They chat, date, and fall in love. There is only one problem. If he marries this girl, he looses everything. He looses his money and whatever caused him to get it in the first place. Any chance of becoming that rich again will be utterly lost. The guy still chooses to loose everything for the girl.

That is love.

Love ... Hurts. According to others, at least. Truth is, I've never been in love yet. And I'm not referring to having a crush or anything like that. Love is the name we give to the feeling that we feel caused by certain chemicals in our brains, I'm not going to say I'm some chemist or neuroscientist and say I know which chemicals do that. But it is also the feeling we have to feel because it's what our body tells us to feel, that idea that we could feel something for another creature in the world for no real reason, that's really love to me, to sacrifice anything to make them happy.

Well, LOVE its just a word, but if you want to look for a deeper meaning, it's an emotion. You can feel attached to someone, or care for someone, and... that's love, I guess. I'm not too into these touchy-feely type things...

Scrolling through, I see a lot of speculation as to what love is as well as humorous musical responses that seem highly appropriate to the topic nonetheless. However, and in all seriousness, I would like to offer my opinion to the matter. I've done a lot of thinking as of late about what love is and how "love" is defined in a cultural context; much of my thinking has been aided by discussions around my college campus.

I think first, it's necessary to flesh out that love is not an undefinable thing, nor is it something so complicated and ambiguous as "you'll know when you feel it" or something to that effect. Rather, one can easily love in all senses of the word by WANTING to work towards the benefit of an individual or group. That's just put simply. Delving deeper, and specifically focusing on the word "benefit", one who loves will desire good, even if the actions working towards said good cause oneself harm or seem to inflict harm or discomfort onto the loved. Furthermore, to really desire something involves both emotion and reason. Extremes one way or the other lead to a warped opinion of what love is and wind up hurting people.

In fact, you can say that as Dollars, we choose to love humanity as a whole, no? Sorry for the long post, as well. ^^;

Love is what you make it. I tell you this from experience. I once loved a girl, but it was a naive love because I didn't know a lot about her. After she rejected me, I felt I'd never feel the same way again. Then I met my current girlfriend almost a year later. I didn't think of her in the same way until I got to know her better. Now I truly believe I love her, and I would do everything to make her happy :D

I think that love is singular, that is, from my point of view. I can honestly say that I love my friends, my family, and you guys; but to divide that love and try to label it is crazy. Loving your comrades, nature, animals is another type of love. Love can also be passion. Loving music, art or any other interest intensely is such an example. Loving your parents is something that will never change, no matter how hard you try, no matter what happens or how hard they are on you. If they mistreat you, you will always, even unknowingly, long for their warmth for love is warmth and security in this case.

So if I were to sum up love I could say it is trust, attachment, compassion, passion, warmth, security, something so irreplaceable that we live our entire lives longing for it. That's my concept of love.

The 3 stages of love
Helen Fisher of Rutgers University in the States has proposed 3 stages of love – lust, attraction and attachment. Each stage might be driven by different hormones and chemicals.

Stage 1: Lust
This is the first stage of love and is driven by the sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen – in both men and women.


Stage 2: Attraction
This is the amazing time when you are truly love-struck and can think of little else. Scientists think that three main neurotransmitters are involved in this stage; adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin.

Adrenaline
The initial stages of falling for someone activates your stress response, increasing your blood levels of adrenalin and cortisol. This has the charming effect that when you unexpectedly bump into your new love, you start to sweat, your heart races and your mouth goes dry.

Dopamine
Helen Fisher asked newly ‘love struck’ couples to have their brains examined and discovered they have high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This chemical stimulates ‘desire and reward’ by triggering an intense rush of pleasure. It has the same effect on the brain as taking cocaine!

Fisher suggests “couples often show the signs of surging dopamine: increased energy, less need for sleep or food, focused attention and exquisite delight in smallest details of this novel relationship” .


Serotonin
And finally, serotonin. One of love's most important chemicals that may explain why when you’re falling in love, your new lover keeps popping into your thoughts.

Does love change the way you think?
A landmark experiment in Pisa, Italy showed that early love (the attraction phase) really changes the way you think.


Dr Donatella Marazziti, a psychiatrist at the University of Pisa advertised for twenty couples who'd been madly in love for less than six months. She wanted to see if the brain mechanisms that cause you to constantly think about your lover, were related to the brain mechanisms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

By analysing blood samples from the lovers, Dr Marazitti discovered that serotonin levels of new lovers were equivalent to the low serotonin levels of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder patients.

Love needs to be blind
Newly smitten lovers often idealise their partner, magnifying their virtues and explaining away their flaws says Ellen Berscheid, a leading researcher on the psychology of love.

New couples also exalt the relationship itself. “It's very common to think they have a relationship that's closer and more special than anyone else's”. Psychologists think we need this rose-tinted view. It makes us want to stay together to enter the next stage of love – attachment.

Stage 3: Attachment
Attachment is the bond that keeps couples together long enough for them to have and raise children. Scientists think there might be two major hormones involved in this feeling of attachment; oxytocin and vasopressin.

Oxytocin - The cuddle hormone

Oxytocin is a powerful hormone released by men and women during orgasm.
It probably deepens the feelings of attachment and makes couples feel much closer to one another after they have had sex. The theory goes that the more sex a couple has, the deeper their bond becomes.
Oxytocin also seems to help cement the strong bond between mum and baby and is released during childbirth. It is also responsible for a mum’s breast automatically releasing milk at the mere sight or sound of her young baby.

Diane Witt, assistant professor of psychology from New York has showed that if you block the natural release of oxytocin in sheep and rats, they reject their own young.

Conversely, injecting oxytocin into female rats who’ve never had sex, caused them to fawn over another female’s young, nuzzling the pups and protecting them as if they were their own.



Vasopressin
Vasopressin is another important hormone in the long-term commitment stage and is released after sex.

Vasopressin (also called anti-diuretic hormone) works with your kidneys to control thirst. Its potential role in long-term relationships was discovered when scientists looked at the prairie vole.

Prairie voles indulge in far more sex than is strictly necessary for the purposes of reproduction. They also – like humans - form fairly stable pair-bonds.

When male prairie voles were given a drug that suppresses the effect of vasopressin, the bond with their partner deteriorated immediately as they lost their devotion and failed to protect their partner from new suitors.


And finally … how to fall in love
Find a complete stranger.
Reveal to each other intimate details about your lives for half an hour.
Then, stare deeply into each other’s eyes without talking for four minutes.

York psychologist, Professor Arthur Arun, has been studying why people fall in love.
He asked his subjects to carry out the above 3 steps and found that many of his couples felt deeply attracted after the 34 minute experiment. Two of his subjects later got married.

The question should be more like "What love isn't" because most people have a weird thought about what love is. They always think its getting to know someone and staying with them forever, but honestly, people always ask for materials to 'prove' their love. Love can be found in money for SOME people. I think THAT'S what love is; the ability to find affection or attraction in things.

"Love" is a terribly inadequate word for the whole range of emotions we express with it (eg: "Your the love of my life!" vs "I love that sandwich!")

So I like to divide love into different categories, and this is one way I've seen it done using the ancient Greek words for love:

Storge – affection
(the love you feel for your family and the love a parent feels for their child)

Philia – friendship
(this is a STRONG bond between friends)

Eros – romance
(related to the physical/sexual love but more of the passionate emotion that comes from 'being in love')

Agape – unconditional love
(Sometimes referred to as the love of God for man, it is a love of someone regardless of their differences and shortcomings)

I think it's important to recognize these differences in love (I'm gonna start using these words in everyday conversation).

Love in my opinion cannot be trusted once you love someone you get attached and when that person leaved you you cant bare yourself anymore. It feels like everything is ending. But in other cases your the one breaking love. And in some cases love inst broken at all. It works in strange ways that are unpredictable

I have been trying to study love so much, I love seeing it happen before my eyes; it makes me all warm smiley and I feel like a teenage girl (I sound gay lol). But I have never felt it before, I have never had a desire to be with somebody anymore than friends. I tried to be like that but every time I do I feel like im lying to myself; than and I loos interest very quick. I love romance movies and books, anime especially and all that but I will never rap my head around why the hell would anyone commit to this one girl or see her more special or important than these other chicks. Shit man, it don't even make me sad to know that about myself, im just pissed that I can't understand what drives a person to do that.

No one can really understand love, it's a mysterious emotion or feeling towards another human or many other people. There's no telling if you would fall in love with the way they look, do things, smell, act, etc. You can fall in love almost in any way. It can be a good or a bad thing in your life once you're "in love". You can get hurt or you can be happy being with the person you want to be with most. It's pretty complex sometimes, but it's a really strong feeling/emotion that can drive some crazy or insane. I don't understand it myself even if I do have a girlfriend, that I do love. But I don't see what benefit it will do for us all if we really knew what it was. Just be happy there's something that can make us less lonely as humans :D

I think love is like life. We don't know how it works.

In all honesty I've never loved anyone. The feeling I've ever had close to love is lust.

To be honest, It depends. In my mind, love is kind of a bonus in life. You don't need it to be happy, you can lead a successful and happy life without it, but for some people it can add excitement and happiness in their lives. But then again, that's the "Romantic" type of love. You can be loved and love without romance, for example you can love your friends and family. Like I said though, even without love from a significant other, friends, or family, you can be happy. I'll leave it at this: Love is what you want it to be. If you want it to be romantic, fine. Want it to be platonic? Go for it. Nonexistent? That's fine too.

When people say you are in love, its more of the process rather than the emotion. The emotional peak, or "True Love", is the genuine peak of your relationship. True Love is reached when all things necessary are completed. So, you have love the process, and true love the emotion. The sort of "magical Ingredients" are established as, 1. Attraction, the chemical part of love. The sexiness, or desire. The mutual interest two people share. This isn't true love, its infatuation. 2. Closeness, the part where you share your feelings, the ability to close in with each other and be so incredibly real. Its really beautiful (and scary) how close people can become without it necessarily being "True Love". 3. Commitment, the pact made with your partner to stay with them, always. Not to leave them. To be there thick and thin. Always, always supporting them. Always caring and keeping the other two steps under your belt. Powerful. But if this scares you, you aren't ready for true love. At a young age, chemicals work in the brain that make you crave new expierences, its natural. So most likely now if you think you are in love, you probably aren't. Not if you can't accept the other steps, which is completely okay. Not to discourage love, but at a young age, taking love too seriously will damage you way more than it can help you. When younger hit, time can mitigate the pain, but it will always remain a scar. So, if you think about love, wait until you are older to even fool with such an absurd (yet beautiful) process which is love and an insanity which is true love. I have outlined what can be understood without expierencing it, the rest you should explore and understand AT AN OLDER AGE. Well, yeah that's pretty much it. "Love" is just a biochemical mechanism to ensure the new creation and preservation of the species and, specifically, of those carrying the set of genes similar to ours. People might like to give it deep meanings and importance, but in the end it's just simple anthropocentrism like back in the medieval times when we used to think that the Earth was the center of the Universe. It's just not abstract enough.

I believe that one shouldn't be so super-deep about the meaning of love nor be so morbid as to define it as a meaningless reproduction method.
Sure, love is what is needed in order for mates to effectively and willingly reproduce
However, this can be mostly shot down by those who are homosexual or even pansexual. Most of their sexual attraction is towards a gender that they are unable to reproduce with, so what then? Also, there's those couples who have actually sworn abstinence between each other, and have still led happy and love-filled lives despite not "reproducing".
Then, there's the philosophy behind love, and how we actually "don't know anything about it, and it's a strange thing different for everybody yet the same at the same time".
This is also quickly shot down by lovely science.
Personally, I believe there's a combination of both. For example, the things we philosophize about love have the ability to fill in what science can't (such as people's sexual preferences, because the whole "set of genes" thing seems like bullshit)
