Are We The Only Ones Out There? (57)

1 Name: CapricornWhale : 2012-09-30 11:32 ID:bMLtBFMX [Del]

Other than the topics of death and the point of good and evil.
There is a topic my school has been debating about for 2 years:
Is there life out there?
Space and also - in the water.
Scientists only explored 5% of our waters. What about the 95%?
Scientists only explored 10% of our universe. What else could be there?
I'll leave to the burning question that has held my mind captive for a long time.

2 Name: Aradjha : 2012-09-30 12:03 ID:MDfkK082 [Del]

In space? Without the shadow of a doubt. Underwater- i should think not. Space is -or is basically, depending on your definition- infinite. If what created earth in a life bearing state is the result of thousands upon thousands of miscellaneous coincidences stacking over hundreds of thousands of years - a pretty precise set of parameters that create a "life giving situation"- then measured up against infinity it is statistically impossible that the same situation should not occur multiple times. Unless of course, God created a universe for us to evolve in, and designed it as an empty playfield. Now; my belief is that life is hard-wired in such a way that it cannot help but evolve into intellgent life given a suitable situation. There are other planets beyond our reach that can carry life, and those that can must. Given time, intelligence arises from life just as the sea cucumber arises from the ameoba. And i would say that we are not likely to be the first of all. But, even for a space faring civilization, the universe is so large.... It could happen that the next galaxy over has many life giving planets- but the space between galaxies is so massive that even writers seldom speak of intergalactic science fiction. Then again, nothing is certain. As for concious life under the sea; i would dismiss it. Down on the bottom there is little light, warmth and oxygen. Life exists there- but complex life forms like dragonflies require very many different things to continue to survive and evolve. Basic lifeforms are more sturdy than complex ones. This is why bacteria and viruses are so difficult to eradicate. Then again- earth is just one thing. who says that there are not dozens more undiscovered elements out there which can cooperate in ways we do not understand and cannot hope to replicate here? We do not know all the rules. Perhaps life can exist in unfathomable ways, greater again than the differnce between plants and animals. We will never know all the answers.

Aradjha, you a philosopher? I completely agree with you. Anything is possible in such a vast universe that we know virtually nothing about. As for underwater, who knows? But I'm willing to believe that if there are living organisms, they'll be nothing like the ones we see in our everyday lives.

As my psych book says, "with a large enough sample, any outrageous thing is likely to happen". In other words, with how amazingly huge a sample the universe is there's got to be life out there somewhere. As for the oceans, meh, I don't think so, but it's not impossible. I just feel like we would have had to run into it by now if there was intelligent life in the oceans.

>>4 We have barely scratched the surface of the ocean.

There is still PLENTY of ocean we have not discovered.

6 Name: Forte_Sigma!ljEVVXEJNE : 2012-09-30 17:16 ID:t68sT2XX [Del]

pardon, not discovered, explored.

7 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-09-30 19:32 ID:Mh3z1xB6 [Del]

>>4 Actually, most of the ocean is still undiscovered since we don't have any submersible craft that go deep enough without the water pressure crushing it.

Also, we have only explored about 1% of the worlds rainforests.

8 Name: anubis!AnUBiS6/LQ : 2012-09-30 19:35 ID:Yz1EN8fr [Del]

I'm not saying it's impossible that there's intelligent life in the oceans, I just think it's unlikely.

Also, I have trouble believing all the random statistics people are throwing around on this thread without any sources. People often parrot facts that others simply made up. Could any of you give some links for those numbers?

13 Name: Haze : 2012-09-30 21:34 ID:EQesreRH [Del]

There is life out there. We are living proof. It is arrogant to believe we're the only sentient beings in this universe. There are billions upon billions upon billions (I think you catch my drift) of galaxies out there. And inside these galaxies are billions of stars which could have planets, which could support life. It is not a question of 'if' there is life out there, but 'where' is it?

14 Name: Echo/Sound Test Service : 2012-10-01 07:54 ID:e516N6he [Del]

However, I was wondering. How probable is it for a planet to be within the exact range of distances from the star in its stellar system such that life can eventually evolve there? While not entirely impossible(we are living proof of that), but one must question if lightning can strike in the same place twice, or rather whether life can spawn twice in the same universe and dimension.

16 Name: Ichigo : 2012-10-01 08:38 ID:gt64rj6a [Del]

HAZE is correct. Humans are an arrogant race by nature. The odds of intelligent life not existing somewhere else is far out weighed by the odds of the opposite. Stop asking "if", start LOOKING for "WHERE"

17 Name: Starrrk : 2012-10-01 09:29 ID:3+aYSvvo [Del]

So many unlikely things occured for life to exist here. The chances are low, but I bet there is life out there. I believe several planets have been found ghat have good qualities for live, but the question at hand is where does live come from. Is a lightning bolt going to strike a tub of ammino acids? Like I said, chances are low, but definitely not zero.

18 Name: Tsuna Suzuki : 2012-10-01 12:37 ID:PFObwhP9 [Del]

I strongly believe that we are not alone. Somewhere, out there, there must be other lifeforms that exist just like we do! Who knows, they might also be wondering if they are alone as well! I just can't seem to accept the idea that we are alone and we are special. There's no way that we're the only living creatures in this vast universe! There has to be other forms of life unknown to us.

19 Name: P : 2012-10-01 17:01 ID:yU0nFTPE [Del]

I believe that there must be other life forms out there. There are so many myths and legends, and many different communities believe in them, so there has got to be some truth behind it. I feel that these ideas must have come from somewhere, and although there is only a small chance that others are out there, there is still a chance

20 Name: wolf-man : 2012-10-01 23:39 ID:64V1uvaE [Del]

P is right, there has to be some other forms of life out there. How esle could peole of thought of the many things, like transformers (the moive series and shows) and ailens, and have so much detail about them.

10% of the universe? That's hardly possible, considering the universe is, apparently, infinitely expanding

28 Name: Pxi!r.3MwOAasY : 2012-10-03 09:17 ID:QLcwPj+1 [Del]

>>27 How can we tell if it's infinitely if we've had a finite time to observe it?

29 Name: Starrrk : 2012-10-03 09:30 ID:KdI9jOeU [Del]

>>28 blue shift proves we are expanding infinitely, which unfortunately will lead to the death of the universe.

30 Name: Pxi!r.3MwOAasY : 2012-10-03 09:39 ID:QLcwPj+1 [Del]

Blue shift would mean that things are closing in on us, it's red shift that shows expansion. And also, that can't prove that it's expanding infinitely, it can only prove that it's expanding.

This is why I have a phobia of swimming in the ocean. For all we know, a megalodon (or how you spell it) could be down there. If you didn't know what that was, and Googled it, you're welcome.

Also, there is NO proof of how big the universe is, therefore we cannot say we explored 10% of the universe - let alone any percentage in general. Because of how big the universe is, I believe there HAS to be other life forms out there. They can be as simple as plants, or a horse-fish, but there has to be some other life out there. The universe is too big for us to be all alone (not to say a bunch of greys will come and murder us all, that I don't believe).

I believe so but the possibility is all based on the small chance of "Earth-like conditions" but I've read into it and they've found plenty of planets with conditions like our planet's. Whether or not the planet has aged enough to produce life is again based on probability. Oceans maybe, scientists recently discovered ecosystems situated near volcanic vents on the ocean floor located under Antarctica and there was that one silicon-based life form found in a lake bed (I think, it was a couple years ago) so there is a chance of them discovering more.

What is out there is the question of what and yourself. You are one with all there is no boundries on the choices we make but randomness and specifics. There you are and aren't. You are decided by one but a million. We are not of nothing.

38 Name: Tsuration : 2013-07-04 18:53 ID:b1YbQh95 [Del]

the answer to that can be taken religiously or scientifically:
in most religions the god or gods do not tell us everything about the universe which means that there could be life on another planet
while science suggests that the so called "big bang" could have also created a planet like ours but millions f light years away so according to what i have read the only answers are maybe and maybe not .
