The other day i had a discussion with my friend about if the US was still the most powerful country in the world, i said no, he said yes, i said no because China is really rising, he said yes cause his a redneck.

Granted America most likely is not the most powerful country in the world - I doubt we have ever been the most power country in the world. America is simply too young as a country to legitimately claim that kind of title.

Are we still rising? Due to the fact that we are fairly young as a country - I'm inclined to say yes. We have a long ways to go before we can really stand next to nations such as china, england or germany and say "I am a nation!"

Our standing in the world was rapidly propelled into the air due to the World Wars we've participated in, and mostly come out on in the winning side in - However, it's important to remember that we, as America, did not "win" any of the wars. They were World Wars, and thus it is far more accurate to say "the team america was on won". America may have contributed to the win, but they did not single handedly go "Hey guys, I kicked the world's ass".

But due to our luck in picking the right side, our standing as a nation has risen rather prematurely. We have a fair amount of clout as a nation, but nearly enough history - As that is something that can only truly be gained with time. History in a nation creates integrity, and that leads to other values strengthening.

tl;dr - I doubt America was ever the most powerful. We've caught some lucky breaks and were very eager to prove ourselves, but we lack the sheer history of other nations, and that lack of extended experience shows.

In a way though, you could argue that America is actually the first nation to emerge in the "new world", where world-communication and trade is a fact of life. That seems like it would have interesting possibilities, though I don't know what they would be.

As an aside note, it'd be helpful if you clarified your discussion topic here. From the title and first post alone, I got "Is america still powerful?", "Who is the most powerful?", and "Is america still a rising power?"

I'd say the US is certainly the most powerful country right now. Our military technology is cutting edge and expensive as hell. Our airforce and navy outnumber China's and Russia's. We have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined and the planes to fill them with. We spend nearly 7 times as much as China and 10 times as much as Russia.

Could the United States win if the whole world ganged up on us? Hell no. We don't have the manpower to take on more than one of the top military countries at once.

We've been around for only a few hundred years for Christ sake. The show's not over, so don't bother calling the outcome.

The fact is, since nuclear technology is in pretty much every country's hands, especially China, everyone is stagnant on wars. All it will take is a few nukes to cripple China, and likewise all it will take is a few nukes to cripple the United States. Until the UN does away with the use of Nuclear technology in wars completely or some defense for the weapon is developed, we can expect few wars being started at this point.

Yeah, our economy is in the toilet right now, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Despite being the youngest country in the world we are actually the strongest in the world in terms of military power; everything else we just suck at.

I think both are powerful honestly, in different ways of course. China is powerful cause of its human resources but US is powerful because we are more united in a way.

To be honest, you can't really say which one is the most powerful of rising in power. You can't call any either weak either.

Yes, it's very true that America is very young and has become noticeable over it's sheer luck in the last hundred years. Though you can't immediately say that it's strong or weak, this goes with China as well. This is also considering both countries views and way of living.

Also, you shouldn't misjudge a redneck or anyone else you talk to. Sure, Americans are full of themselves, but many of them can really make a difference if you give them the right kind of push. It goes for anyone actually. Just because China is larger and probably has more military brains, doesn't mean you should immediately say it's a superpower. Every country has it's hidden talent, many people should notice that America still has a lot of growing to do, so you shouldn't say that we are weak just yet. The future is vast so you can't assume anything or compare us to other countries.
