Forget St. Valentines Day, IT IS LUPERCALIA! (68)

1 Name: divineraccoon !lOJ5tap5Nk : 2012-02-13 10:30 ID:aETvQ0Lx [Del]

Today is February 13th, the first day of Lupercalia, the ancient three day celebration hailing the she-wolf who raised Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, at the cave of Lupercal. This holiday signified the spring to come and was a key time of the year for bringing in good and lively will among the men [mostly] and women. It was supposedly a time that would run off the bad spirits, invoke the good, cause fertility and growth to be abundant in the people, animals and crops. Marked with drinking and sex, nudity, running, whips and stories of lore, this holiday was an outstanding event. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church eventually placed its hands on what was deemed pagan and evil and changed the holiday, as it has done over human history to all the original holidays, and transformed it into something different.

Now, what the church once made as a holiday to recognize the Saint Valentines (yes there are more than one), has been diluted into a consumerism debauchery, focused on buying overpriced chocolates, flowers and cards. This is a far cry from the original St. Valentine's Day and even further from the ORIGINAL-original holiday of Lupercalia.

So, find your lover and ravish his/her body like the Greeks and Romans of old. Bless these next three days with joy, dancing, singing and any form of celebration that seems fit to you, anticipating the Spring. Hope for good fortune for you and your family. Pray for good food. Feast and drink in your merriment. Share the jovial experience with others.

Fuck red paper hearts and boxes of chocolate. Hail, the She-Wolf who raised Romulus and Remus! Hail, purity and blessings to come!

The more I find out about them, the more I'm seriously considering switching to the old holidays. It's annoying how the church decided to take everything over and 'fix' it.

so todays valentines day is like a catholic cover up, because they deemed Lupercalia pagan?

>>21 Because it was pagan and they deemed it evil, yes. Ever wonder what is up with Halloween or why Christmas is in December? Cover ups on old holidays.

While I love to celebrate Valentine's Day the old fashioned way, Calendar Man does not recognize Lupercalia, and so we must visit him on February 14th if we wish to be one step closer to being awarded the Storyteller achievement in Batman: Arkham City. But, nonetheless, I approve of Lupercalia :)

Calendar Man needs to do some reading on history.

>>26
Ancient Roman/Ancient Greek. The word comes from latin. Check out the links/wikipedia for me details on the linguistic background.

>>27
I fail to see how this is relevant. Maybe you mean to post this in the Birthday Thread.

"Other authors, like Oruch, have also claimed that the modern customs of Saint Valentine's Day originate from Lupercalia customs, again without proof."
I still prefer it to Valentine's Day though.

I agree with PandaBlackRabbit.
Same here. I am lesbian, and I find some christian beliefs offensive and unfair. also, I have found a few things that contradict eachother in the Bible. Although I do believe in one god...I do not consider to be a male. I think since god is omnipresent, (s)he is also 'transgender'. (in a sense not physically but emotionally. i dont think god has a gender at all. I also practice magick, but in a form that uses 'good spirits' power. Its complicated. i consider myself..well...i really dont know lol. But i guess i practice...grey magick?! lol. i think imma witch...but a 'good' witch. haha. i just do what i consider good. helpful. appreciative. But i ain't no wimp. I am not afriad to defend myself. ('bad' spells)

>>49 wow...I feel agreed with...that doesn't happen very often. :) most people just growl at me. but I understand sexuality with religion....I'm bi and can't tell some of my friends because they are devoted Christians. I refuse to think just because I'm a little different I'm going to be damned. I don't even believe in hell....as for magic...I definatly believe in that.....I know things...like future things...and I see things others don't...

AAAAAAND Back to posting things about this thread, in this thread. Let's try not to end up completely derailing the thread.

Besides, Lupercalia isn't for another three months (roughly). Why has this even been bumped? -If responding, please sage your post-

Anyway, I personally think Lupercalia is the superior holiday. Not just because I'm a fan of Greek and Roman mythologies, but because it just generally seems better in terms of a celebratory holiday.

/sagepost/

>>47 I get it now, but to avoid confusion I have heard of people with similar beliefs refer to themselves simply as christian wiccans. It's much more clear and less uncertain, also to my ears at least sounds less jumbled than wiccachristian. Not to hate or anything call yourself what you will.

54 Name: Junkori : 2013-02-03 21:10 ID:yiv0b20K [Del]

In the old days that is true but there is a greater truth of why the Catholic Church as named this Holiday as it is. As I said there is a greater truth but the church is covering up. Now why would they do that. Keep that in mind when that day comes

Even if the true reason of Valentine's day is lost that doesn't mean people have to "forget about it". Spread it around, the origin, of Valentine day if you wish so people can know the truth.
